David Bowie – Velvet Goldmine Lyrics
|
katthikarioftheturks... velvet goldmine came out in '98 or '99, and its title came FROM this CLASSIC (meaning MUCH older) bowie song. the movie is a thinly veiled "fictional biography" of david bowie, and the only reason you don't actually *hear* this song in the movie is that bowie refused to allow his songs to be used in the film, much to its makers' chagrin. you're right about there being a connection... but you're very much off base in every other respect. a simple examination of the release dates for the song and the movie would tell you that. |

Phish – Catapult Lyrics

has anybody heard the version of this on the phish tribute album? it's mixed with two other songs - mike's song and tweezer reprise, i think. i think i like that version better than phish's - it's really awesome. i can't remember who it's by, though, for sure - "lake trout" perhaps? |

They Might Be Giants – Women And Men Lyrics

or maybe it's just about a small ship of people arriving at a new, unpopulated place, and how it eventually becomes full and whatnot, due to traditional human behaviors... who knows? i tend to take it literally.
good song, regardless. |

lalala MADAME BUTTERFLY lalala...
yes, it is a good song, though listening to it over and over takes a bit away from it, which means that it is not a classic. |

haha guidosrevenge, i thought they were kind of obvious, so i didn't say anything before ("clever lyrics"...). i didn't notice the "heartbeat" part, though. and i am pretty sure it's "beatnik". |

Guster – Parachute Lyrics

thank you soooo much, christdudefif, you were so very civil about your religious beliefs, and didn't try to say you were right and everyone else was wrong. that is absolutely wonderful... even though i disagree with you :). seriously, though, that was the perfect way to present a view. |

Beulah – If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart Lyrics
| 22 years ago

i really like the beginning of it though... the rest of it seems like it's for/about the fans (or lack thereof?), but the first stanza makes it seem like a love song, almost...
anyways, regardless, i really like this song... it has energy, a great melody... ah, i love it!
also, my dad thinks they sound a lot like the early beatles here, does anyone agree? |

Dispatch – The General Lyrics

i will try to "quit being an ass", but rakaz:
1) if every song has one meaning - which may very well be true, though i know for a fact that there are some artists who write extremely ambiguous songs on purpose - and it is "worthless" to argue over the meanings, then why are you a comment-posting member of songmeanings? the whole point of this site is to discuss - or "argue" - about the MEANINGS of the lyrics. perhaps this song is about some game pete francis or one of the other members of dispatch, played when he was young, and we're all wrong - opinions still matter.
2) when you tell other people to not be rude, it is a good idea to avoid rudeness yourself.
and finally,
3) the civil war has been over for 120 years. jesus, if he existed, has been dead for nearly 2000 years.
it could easily be about either... or both! |

Sheryl Crow – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics

i've never heard this, so you're probably right about her singing the version that buckley sings, but leonard cohen originally wrote the song with THESE lyrics, and then he himself changed them on later occasions. |

Rent – One Song Glory Lyrics

yes, i wish i'd seen it with him. i saw it with manley pope, and not only was he awkward (i think this was probably a bad show for him), but his voice just didn't fit the part, or at least my idea of roger's part (which has been influenced by several years of listening to the original recording on repeat...).
of course, RENT was still great! but it could have been even better. |

John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics
|
what the hell are you talking about, groovyguy?
1) i don't understand how god plays a part. just because you believe that "there is no existence without heaven and hell", that doesn't mean everyone does. i am existing just fine without either, thank you very much. john himself explored various systems of belief where heaven and hell played no part.
2) "And even if you want to imagine they don't exist, that doesn't change reality."
that's what people have been saying - this is HOPEFUL... it is not, simply by being imagined, something that exists. there are still countries. there is still greed and hunger. and, as you have proved, there is still religion. in this, you are totally correct - simply imagining something to exist does not make it exist. but john lennon, and the people here, are NOT saying that this utopia/dystopia EXISTS, or will exist simply because of their dreaming and hoping - they are just saying that such harmony in life is what's hoped for. |

Modest Mouse – Dark Center of the Universe Lyrics

i've seen two conflicting versions of the lyrics on this song, and i'm unsure which is correct - some differences between the two: "God saying something" doesn't come until later in the song, and the lyric is, instead, "well, died sayin' something, but didn't mean it." also, in the other version, it's not "dry and wet ice", but "dry OR wet ice." there are probably other differences as well, but those were the two i noticed... if anyone can help me out, that'd be great! because there really are about an equal number of both versions of lyrics when i search the song. |
