Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home Lyrics
| 14 years ago

This is my absolute favorite love song of 2009, if not the whole freaking decade. I know that "Home is wherever I'm with you" feeling, and it's one of the most incredible things in the world. |

Michael Bublé – I'm Your Man Lyrics

Man, I love Leonard Cohen, but I swear most people sing his songs better than he did in the first place. Awesome cover. There are moments that really capture the desperation of trying to express your love to someone. |

Hem – Half Acre Lyrics

My copy of Rabbit Songs predates the insurance commercial by several years. These are the lyrics as they appear on the album. The lyricist for the band, Dan Messe, said he wrote this song for his parents for their anniversary. |

Hem – The Part Where You Let Go Lyrics

It was a Nationwide or Allstate commercial maybe? I think it was the same insurance company that used Half Acre in a commercial. I'm not sure what company it was.
This song is about the person who always puts you back together when you fall apart, and being there for them when they need you. It's an amazing love song that applies to just about every type of love, romantic, platonic, familial, etc. |

Bell X1 – Flame Lyrics

|
Oh, what a great reference to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in here! I think this is about when you forget that you can fall in love, and suddenly you get hit out of nowhere with it. This song is kind of funny to me because the boy who reccommended this Bell X1 album to me kissed me for the first time after we roasted marshmallows for s'mores :) |

The Gaslight Anthem – 1930 Lyrics

Oh wow.
Knowing that and then reading the lines "You said I love you more than the stars in the sky, But your name it just escapes me tonight" feels like getting punched in the stomach, except the lyrics hurt more. |

Joan as Police Woman – Eternal Flame Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
These lyrics are so incredible when read aloud, let alone sung. Anyway...
I think this is about dependence in relationships. So many people look to their lovers for validation and happiness; she's efusing to be the souce of either. It's about the disconnect that forms when one person's independence makes the other feel inadequate. |

Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics
|
I think this song is about the need to reach out and connect with people, lovers or otherwise, especially as you get older.
Mostly, this song reminds me of this little park in my neighborhood that I've been going to since I was a kid. There's a man made lake and a grotto in the woods that used to hold religious statues, and there was this beautiful old church. They recently tore down the church after it was set on fire last summer. Now that it's gone, the park breaks my heart. It was by no means a secret place that no one else knew about, but it was one of those special, kind of magical places where you could immerse yourself. Now it's just a park. |

Leonard Cohen – Master Song Lyrics
|
I never heard this song, I just stumbled upon the lyrics. I think it's kind of a partner to Famour Blue Raincoat, like a sequel of a prequel (I don't know which was written first), but with a kind of "Story of O" thing going on. Both songs seem to be about a woman bouncing between two friends (like Sir Stephen and Rene?) who returns to her original lover a changed woman, longing more for the alternate than for the singer. While in the second to last verse, the singer seems confident that he will be the woman's preference, the question of the final line may mean he's not so sure where he affections lie anymore.
Having never heard the song, I could be way off the mark. Now I'll have to track it down and listen to it, and maybe revise me opinoin. |

Elbow – Ribcage Lyrics
|
I think this song is about taking a scandalous affair public and not giving a damn about the reaction ("we blew the doors, didn't we? pissed in their champagne"), whether it's an actual affair, an interracial relationship, or something as simple as two freinds who have been carrying on in secret letting their friends know. They're proud of it and claiming it (hence the "Gave ourselves a name and peeled away the shame" line). I also thing there's a bit of mischief in the pair, like these people found their matches in each other and they are all they need.
That said, the line "We called that love" really kind of challenged my interpertation and suggests an entirely different meaning, like no one was ever supposed to find out about the lovers. Maybe? I'm still kind of working out the end, but I'll stick to my posi interperation for now. |

Ida – Les Étoiles Secrètes Lyrics
|
God I love this song. I think it's about falling in love with a friend and how crazy that can make you when you don't know how to handle the situation; when you can't think or eat or sleep and all you want to know is how they feel.
I also like the secret stars references (the title translates to "the secret stars"). Ida are certainly huge fans of them, as am i. |

mewithoutYou – Seven Sisters Lyrics
|
Given that mewithoutyou's songs predominantly fall into one of two categories (girls or God), i'm going with God on this one.
I love the line "There are a thousand sanities worth leaving to take your madness home." Alone, this line says to me that you can either put up a front and be someone you're not for the sake of seeming normal, or you can just be yourself, madness and all. But that's awfully posi for this band, and in the context of the song, i'm guessing it's refering to holding true to your faith, even if everyone else in the world thinks your crazy for it, because it's what's going to take you home to heavnen |

The Mountain Goats – Cubs in Five Lyrics
|
The first time i heart this song i thought it was such a clever way to say "Go to hell! You sucked, I'm over you, and i'm never coming back!" I kinda used it as a mantra, rem9inding myself to stay away from boys I learned the hard way were no good for me. Then the Bucs won the super bowl, and it's like the entire meaning of the song change. I freaked out and tried to explain to my dad the social implications of their victory, and he just kind of looked at me like i was crazy. At lease my freinds understand. |

Mineral – Slower Lyrics

I also agree with emo 12 about the it's so screwed up line. Even the way that it's sung, when he repeats it, it's like he's saying once, really understnading how crazy everythign is and is forced to say it again. I do love that line. I think htat's a realizatoin everyone makes every now and again.
It's funny, it's easter and i decided that since i'm not gonna go to hcurch, ill just listen to mineral and I don't feel like a complete heathen. ha. |

yeah, kilda's gotta be right on the suicide thing. It's totally about someone's freind whose shit completely hit the fan. "I don't know how you feel but i'll make you a deal if you'll make it out a live, my shoulders and ears are all yours my dear" is so great, totall support and love for a friend. but the "your contemplating you hanging from your cieling" as well as the line i just quoted kinda pin it as a suicide song. Didn't hot water music actaully write this? |

But yeah, i always kinda related to this song in that there's so many guys who don't even bother trying to understand, so all that all i realy ever felt like i was doing was killing time, waiting for someone to give me a reason to be a woman. They weren't giving, so netiher was i. I don't know, that's how i see it too. |

The White Octave – Call the Kiss Lyrics
|
This song definately has a suicidal tone to it. I think it's about someone who's trying to deal with a friend who attempted suicide, and neither of them are all too stable. It seems to say basically "hey, i'm fucked up and you're fucked up, but i'm going to help you however I can anyway." It's about giving your all when you've got nothing to give just to help someone you love. The end of this song is brilliant though. "If i could split my heart in 2 I'd give the beating half to you..." |

Alkaline Trio – Fuck You Aurora Lyrics

Aurora is also a girls name. I always went back and forth between thinking it was a person and a car, but the way that he uses the second person, saying things like "All your lonely nights" and "you have to be the cutest gravedigger i've ever seen" leads me to think it's about a person, but I can't be sure of that. My freinds and I often discuss this but can never really come up with a real answer. |

I think this is about someone who has a friend or girlfriend or whatever who was assulted, or otherwise hurt physically at some point, and his leaving her because it damaged their relationship.
