tubesocks, your definition was equally as great. i liked how you pointed out the "its a waste of time if i can't smile easily like in the beginning", because i relate to that part the most.
personally, i imagined this song to be something like what would happen if i saw an old friend of mine (someone who i was never officially with, but we were more than friends). i'm still not quite sure what happened to us, but we started fading away.. and then, i see him at school again after a summer apart, and it was something like this song. i really relate to it, especially since i want to rekindle a friendship, at least. that's what i get out of it, anyway. brings back memories..

i think you misread me, cdconn - i definitely agree with you about jimmy eat world. i don't think they were intentionally mainstreamed, i think they were happened upon, but i didn't like how they redid "sweetness". that sort of gave me a bad vibe, for some reason.

i've been in love with this song for years.. i guess it depends on what kind of mood you're in, and what you're doing and such but sometimes i get the feeling like this song could be about god. i'm agnostic existentialist, so its not because i believe in god, but the lyrics sort of hint at it for me. i don't doubt that this song could also be about a relationship or drugs.. that's the great thing about music. it means whatever you want it to mean, and its different for different people.

i think vampires is the obvious choice, but not exactly right. this song, to me, is about people who are misunderstood. since people aren't often around at night, its a place for them to come out. others pretend to understand them, and they pretend to understand themselves. personally, i always imagine this midnight car ride i went on with my cousin - we were just singing along with billy and airguitaring with d'arcy and james and drumming along with jimmy like we knew what we were doing. yay for the smashing pumpkins and for good memories!

what's great about music is that it means different things to different people. to me, i see this song as a look into the past and the "good old days" when you used to hang out and do whatever the fook you wanted. its a really amazing song, i learned d'arcy's bassline to it and its really fun to play. viva la smashing pumpkins (well, their music, anyway)
