Orchid – Dissadents In Love Lyrics 19 years ago
bernardhine dohrn was a founding member of the weather underground, an activist organization in the late 60s/early 70s. they broke Timothy Leary out of jail and did a lot of really awesome things to undermine a government they felt to be oppressive. they got their name from the bob dylan song subterranean homesick blues. the lyric is "it doesn't take a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows".

now she's a law professor at University of Chicago and an advocate of children's rights. she is married to Bill Ayers who was also a founding member of the weather underground.

Thelonehellion: wow, that's a really interesting interpretation of the song. I never thought of it that way. I always thought of it more as someone who wants to escape...but I definitely like your interpretation more.

I think it may be a bit of both.

Great song, which I can relate to strongly.

Q And Not U – Kiss Distinctly American Lyrics 21 years ago
Who cares about someone's screen name.

This song is a commentary on sex in religious-right dominated American culture. Probably my favorite song on the album and the one with the best message. It is so true.

Palatka – Palatka Kills Young Republicans Without Batting an Eyelash Lyrics 21 years ago
Good message. The song is trying to convey the point that you can not give up on your ideals. "These are our just deserts as bleeding hearts run dry." This line sums up the entire song by basically saying that we deserve this (right dominated culture) because the leftists (bleeding hearts) simply let things happen,

I love this song and I like the message behind it. It is important to never let apathy take over.

The Assistant – I Don't Believe Lyrics 21 years ago
I love the quote from SLC Punk at the beginning of this song.

The song mainly focuses on scene politics. It is about someone who has gotten caught up in the superficialities involved like money, fashion, popularity and has forgotten what it's really about. They are now a big joke and have turned on their ideals, their principles, the friends who got them where they are.

The whole atmosphere of the song is captured with the line "Stop your show, your words mean nothing"

You And I – Crossing The Rubicon Lyrics 21 years ago
"I'll die, we're all so imperfect , I don't want to die without you, I fear dying without you"

Gorgeous and so true. This song reveals the innate human tendency to 1. be afraid of death 2. and to be alone.

Gorgeous.

"she spoke to me in a soft voice, offering words and images of extreme beauty"

Doesn't this song create beautiful imagery. The picture in my head is so vivid. This song may be a little to real for me, a reminder of feelings long gone.

Also, the quote from Basketball Diaries is classic.

You And I – We All Bleed Lyrics 21 years ago
My favorite You and I song most definitely.

"It sealed my lungs every last inch, and I missed your call while not waiting we never open up to closed wounds long left for bleeding, it's always this way...let me bleed my heart let me bleed my soul"

Doesn't that passage capture it all? It is pain, anger, diffidence, despair captured in a beautifully poetic manor.

You And I – All Imperfect Things Lyrics 21 years ago
No comments eh?

This song is so gorgeous. It describes the tragic hopelessness of all relationships. By saying, "we are so imperfect" he is showing how flawed all interactions with others really are. Eventually, he decides to let go, thus indicating he has finally mustered enough courage, enough self-respect to do so.

Cap'n Jazz – Aok Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about denying your true feelings, about keeping up the illusion of happiness. This need to mask one's true self comes from being taught to feel a certain way, of being taught taht some emotions are not okay to feel. Thus, the person in the song is repressed and unable to communicate how they feel.

I can relate to this song more than I'd like to admit.

I Hate Myself – Conversation With Dr. Seussicide Lyrics 22 years ago
Yeah...this is a beatiful song. I love it so much. I love all the symbomlism, and the imagery that the song creates. This is my second favorite I Hate Myelf song (next to Caught in a Flood...) Anyways, I think the meaning of this song is fairly obvious, but I shall say what this song means to me. He's talking to a friend, perhaps a girlfriend, maybe someone from the past. He's contemplating suicide...he feels like nothing is going right in his life. Pure self-loathing at its best. The only thing is, maybe the person he is talking to shares his pain. She knows how he feels so they "Pass out together in the shed or the bed." Maybe the guy feels like he deserves to die. He says. "What better way to put myself in my place." I think that is very indicative of how he already feels dead, so his reasoning is that it will not be much different once he kills himself. At the end, he just wants to be comforted...he wants to be told everything is alright, to have the past erased. Oh...I have a correction though...after he says, "Broken hearts are easy to hide, broken hearts are easy to ignore. See when you break your heart nothing really breaks." a line has been omitted. After that portion of the song, he sings, "It's just a figure of speech."

Cap'n Jazz – Ooh Do I Love You Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a great song. It's incredibly symbolic. The lyricist uses metaphors to convey his thoughts. None of caP'n Jazz's lyrics are very straightforward. The most straightforward song I can think of off the top of my head is "Basil's Kite." Anyways, if you think about the lyrics and listen to the song, a meaning starts to form. These lyrics are very interpretive. I'm sure they can mean anything to anyone, but we'll never know what Mike(or Tim or whoever) was thinking when they wrote the lyrics. Personally, I think this song is about being so in love with someone, but the relationship begins to go wrong. He is just lost in his thoughts. Lots of symbolism that I don't care to explain etc...

Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 22 years ago
This isn't about the song really, it's more about the viewpoints of some of the people posting. The only instances Christianity has been used to justify killing is when the government intertwines itself with religion. Think about it. It's not just Chrisitianity either. It's all religions that have hypocritical elements to them. However, you can't just apply this to ALL the people who practice the religion. Not everyone is corrupt. Back to my main point, religion is only corrupt when it controls the government or is the government. Instances of this are the Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, the war between the Jews and the Muslims over Israel, The bombing of the WTC. I'm sure there are many other instances, but these few show how necesary separation of church and state really is. About the song, I agree with odin_lowe.

Nine Inch Nails – Down in It Lyrics 22 years ago
He's not really talking about God. He uses symbolism. It's abstract. I suppose you can look at this song many ways. I never really saw the resemblance to Christianity until you people pointed it out. Anwyays, I don't think that Trent really hates religion. I think that there are just certain types of people that make religion annoying. The bible-thumpers and those that automatically condemn others to hell. This is a great song though. The way I see it is there is this person and they have this perfect life. Nothing is in there way. They feel as if nothing in the world could possibly foul them up. Then, they are faced with a choice. They can follow the unknown(the little dot) and stray from their path or they can keep leading the life that they are now. Obviously, the person chooses to follow the dot. This is the worst choice they have ever made possibly. They keep falling deeper and deeper and getting farther off track. It brings them down, but they don't want to believe it. Then, finally once the person is so far gone, once they have lost it all, they realize just how wrong everything they did was. They have hit rock-bottom and now do not even know themselves any longer. He remembers when he was someone. He remembers when everything seemed so perfect. He is filled with regret on how he f*cked everything up. He is in utter despair, but I believe that maybe the person has some hope because he says, "goodybe" to the old person. He sheds that old person and wants to start his life over and re-do everything, erase the past. Or, the last verse could be seen as he thinks the only way to cleanse himself of all his mistakes is to commit suicide. Either way, it's a tragically beautiful song.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Ava Adore Lyrics 22 years ago
There are obviously many different interpretations of this song, but to me this song is about a destructive relationship. The writer is madly in love with this woman, but for some reason, she is not right for him. In the end he knows she will end up destroying him. However, because of his strong affection for her, he will not ever let her go. The girl most likely has a lot of baggage that needs to be dealt with and this baggage carries over into their relationship and taints it. Perhaps, in his eyes she is perfect. It's just the rest of the world that views her as imperfect, but he sees the world's opinion and he can't dismiss it. Also, perhaps it's about escaping lonliness. He's with this girl that is not good for him because he can't stand to be alone. She fills him, yet he is still hungry. Maybe in a way he is using this girl. I don't know. That's what I've always thought this song meant, but it definitely could mean a myriad of other things. It all depends on the person.

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is extremely depressing to me for some reason. It's definitely about reflecting upon your youth, probably in the suburbs. When I listen to this song, it fills me with regret. It causes me to wonder if I haven't wasted it all. It makes me want everything back again. You know that you will only have your teenage years once and they flash in front of your eyes so quickly. This song makes me wonder if when I am 30, I'll look back with regrets on my actions as a teenager. "faster than the speed of sound, faster than we though we'd go." I think that line expresses how these times speed by so quicly. We'll never have them back again. Even though the lyrics might be confusing, I think they make perfect sense. Listen to the music, hear the lyrics. They mesh together to form this beautiful nostalgic picture.

American Nightmare – Farewell Lyrics 22 years ago
This is my theme song. It is absolutely beautifully written. This song perfectly conveys my experiences of this past year. This song is basically about someone who broke someone's heart. He'll never forget the person. He remembers them so fondly. He can't stand to think that they will never be together again, but he knows he has to accept it. He sees them as being so perfect for eachother, but he has lost his chance. He just wants the person to know, that even through all the shit, he still loves them, he still wants them in his life. Very sad. I can strongly relate to this song. There are a few parts that I like in particularly. "Two hour drives are two hours alone but two hour drives are better than home." ---This line is so true. When you feel like shit, the last place you want to be is home wallowing in it. I can remember so many times that I've just wanted to get out and drive. It is so theraputic. "You'll cry, it doesn't change a thing, Kill the lights and let the rain fall." This part basically is just saying that it's okay to cry. Sometimes you can't help it. Crying really doesn't change anything, it's just something that you have to do...maybe if you cry enough you'll drown in your own tears. I don't know...I like that lyric. "Recall the meomories of yesterdays and better ways and know the innocence is gone, move on." Wow. That is so true. That is something that I'm definitely going through this year. At a certain point, you do lose your innocence. I wanted so badly to regain it, but eventually I realized that it's gone...and I do have to move on. You can remember the past all you want, but don't dwell in it. And my las favorite lyric is: "...the one thing that's stayed the same...I've lived through days and I've lived through nights. I've had my loves, and I've had my fights. You've got to know, you have my heart." Another 'wow.' That is exactly what I would say to a certain person if I could. I would tell them how much I still care and let them know that they have my heart, and that they always did...yeah, so anyways, that's why this song is my theme song.

American Nightmare – am/pm Lyrics 22 years ago
In my opinion, this song is about someone who has been burned very badly. All of their past relationships have left them afraid to love again. They have been so hurt that they do not want to ever love again. However, it seems as if this person has fallen in love again. He doesn't want to love the person, but he can't help it. "you're everything." He thinks that all is lost because he has found love again. He tells the person not to love him, that they should run away. He has hurt to many people, he can't bare the guilt and the pain again. At the end of the song he acknowledges that this behavior isn't necessarily healthy. He wonders why he behaves the way he does. He feels like he has died, like he has lost it all. He wants to be somewhere else, but it is too hard for him to get there. All he wanted to do was live, but he feels like he has destroyed the possibility of that for himself.

American Nightmare – (we Are) Lyrics 22 years ago
"This is the soundtrack to saying goodbye/for feeling cold like December in the middle of July(So Fuck It)/We are dead flowers and pocket change - me forcing smiles - so tragic baby/We are the depressed future heartbreakers and this is how we sound/sometimes I just want to fade away with no good-byes or anything." Wow. This is an excellent American Nightmare song. It is so beautiful. Like the song says, "this is the soundtrack to saying goodbye." That's what this song is about. It's about letting go and accepting. It's about the pain that you experience while trying to let go. Very good song. Wes is such a good lyricist.
