I interpret this song to be about a homeless man who once had a family, but drugs messed up his life and now he's out on the streets.
He just wants his family to forgive him and no matter how they try to help him, he keeps ending up back "out in the rain", and on the street.
The trash fire symbolizes the place where he feels safest. It's warm and comforting, but not safe from the storm that is his drug use.
He's writing this letter to his family to tell them to forgive him and and not to worry about him because he did it to himself. |

I think this song is about a struggle to cope with the pain after the ones who you could always take your pain to and be comforted by (i.e. parents) are gone. When you're little you always get comforted by your parents, you take your pain to them.

It's not really that bad. Calling them "sell outs" is a bunch of bullshit though. I mean they do what the want. And it's not like they went out and got Ja Rule to do it...THEY were approached by Swizz Beats.
While other "metal" bands are afraid to go out and try something new and be different Metallica embraces it with arms wide open. If it fails...oh well, they tried. That's what I call having some balls.
And this song isn't really theirs. It's Swizz Beat's song it just features Metallica riffs and James' singing. It's not like they did a lot of work on it. All their stuff on it is stuff they've already recorded for the new album. |

The symphonic intro reminds me of a race, or maybe something fast, moving in. Something large, powerful, could be symbolic of the "freight train" coming. Also if you listen before the lyrics...you can hear what sounds like train whistles. And just before the chorus comes in the music speeds up, and then halts suddenly...again signifying a quick end to something. An abrupt end. I interpret the song to be how everything is going right in your life...but instead of stopping to see the signs of trouble, you just go right along and let the beauty of life take hold of you. Then you do something to try and get ahead ("sucker for that quick reward") and you pay for it. But there's a light at the end of the tunnel...it won't be bad forever. But uh oh...that light was just a "train"...an even bigger problem then what you had before. You are royally fucked, and have very bad luck. Hence the name "No Leaf Clover" as opposed to a four leaf clover, which is supposed to symbolize good luck. |
