Monsters of Folk – Temazcal Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of the most beautiful lyrics, in my opinion. It's hard to choose a favorite line, but I think the most evocative is, "I watch you braid your hair, you're from another time when the Earth wasn't so angry and God was on our side." I imagine a pretty Spanish woman with long dark hair in a candle-lit room everytime I hear it.

Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch Lyrics 13 years ago
Yep, I agree with KTTheLibra...

The song is most definitely about anxiety, and expressed so well!

"Moonshine (or blue shine) bleeds into my eyes" I think this is actually literal! When you have anxiety and panic attacks, trying to fall asleep at night can be difficult and anxiety inducing itself, so you end up lying awake and you could literally be staring at the moon all night.... moon or blue shine fits for this since the moon can give off a blue glow.

In the next lines about the white noise and being what someone wants him to be, he's worrying about something, maybe conforming, and it's keeping him awake.

The whole part leading up to "Can you fall asleep with a panic switch" sort of describes a person's physical reaction to anxiety... itchy fingers, feeling beaten down, etc.

I think the next part about the pink slip is either an extremely elaborate metaphor about trying to let the anxiety take hold (like a pink slip to let it in) while attempting to overpower it (burn skin and brand what was once mine -- maybe get myself back to where I once was, claim myself again), OR it's just another anxiety inducing dilemma and he's thinking about a girl that he tried to be with and it ended up not working out. I like to think it's about an inner struggle to get back his sanity, but you never know! He does say "she"...

The end "waiting and fading and floating away" sort of lends itself to either scenario. Either he or she has failed to overcome the anxiety and are just letting it rule them, OR he's giving up on the relationship that brought him to this point and that's why at the end he says do you think "she'll" sleep with a panic. . .

Well, that's my analysis!! It was fun :)

Vanessa Carlton – London Lyrics 14 years ago
Very pretty song :) Are you sure it's not "But I wanna know the secrets that only cobblestones hold"? I wouldn't be surprised if the lyrics on here are correct because she often uses odd phrasings, but it sounds like "wanna know" on the recording I have and you can't really wonder secrets, you wonder 'about' them, you know? :)

After listening to a pretty clear online version on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgu_Vey2M9g... I think the line goes "Can't cut a girl in bloom" and then the "cover me now part" is totally a separate thought...

The lyrics in this song are WEAK, but the bass line is pretty awesome.

Jimmy Eat World – Always Be Lyrics 16 years ago
PS - Maybe if you are in high school or your late teens this song won't especially bother you but now that I'm almost 23 it's extremely obvious that most bands who write about high school drama are only in it for the money because people grow up & why would a mature adult want to sing songs about young & immature love over and over?

Jimmy Eat World – Always Be Lyrics 16 years ago
I actually think this might be one of my least favorite JEW songs. I do not like it. And the video does nothing for the bands credibility. I am sick of bands made up of musicians in their late 20's or 30's still writing songs about being in high school as their lead or standout singles. It's obvious they are 'playing the game' so to speak to make money.

With Clarity & then their past album with songs like "23" and "Drugs or Me' I really thought they were just going to keep getting better & more mature, but after hearing this song I'm not sure ... this song is very mediocre.

Ben Folds – Fred Jones Pt. 2 Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The lyrics are so insightful without being preachy, and the music is like a derailing Merry-go-round ... a little bittersweet, a little psycho and a little sad. It's perfect.

Vanessa Carlton – Fools Like Me Lyrics 16 years ago
^ Yes, I think the "it's breaking" part could be really intense on the album, too. I'm hoping it will sort of sound stormy and that the whole song will just start booming at this point. The piano is very low and rumbling here and I just hope they do it justice. It's my favorite part of the song. And I totally agree with you about how every turn of lyric and music in this song fits perfectly. A definite Vanessa favorite :)

Jack's Mannequin – MFEO: Part 1: Made for Each Other/Part 2: You Can Breathe Lyrics 17 years ago
I never put that much thought into this song, but I suppose I should have. Your explanations make the song so much deeper. I always took the 1st half of the song very frivolously and didn't even notice the drug references. Andrew is such a good lyricist and the happy-go-lucky music to contrast the devastating effects of hard drugs is very clever.

Hanson – Every Word I Say Lyrics 17 years ago
I honestly think this song is sung with more passion than I have ever heard another person put into one song ever before. The "no no no no" parts by Taylor are heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Why are Hanson so under appreciated just because of their childhood music? Their new music is so good.

Damien Rice – Dogs Lyrics 17 years ago
The part of the song I reference below has made me fall in love with this song. The verses are alright, but this different section that starts after about 2 minutes is just amazing. I love the part about moving like a little girl and becoming a child, it's great. I think one of the main reasons you can fall in love with a person is how easy it is for you to be yourself around them, act goofy sometimes and feel like a little kid again.

Oh and she's always dressed in white
She's like an angel, man
She burns my eyes
Oh and she turns
She pulls a smile
We drive around
And she drives us wild
Oh and she moves like a little girl
I become a child, man
She moves my world
And she gets splashed in paint
And turns away
and leaves me standing.

I think people are right that this is the odd man out sort of song. I think he's in a love with a girl who already has a boyfriend, or someone that she loves- not him. Kind of sad, but instead of being dramatically depressing, this song is really uplifting and beautiful. Damien Rice is great.

Christina Aguilera – Hurt Lyrics 17 years ago
Luckyorange, just because she did not write this song doesn't mean it's not a good song and she can't get emotional about it. She does write a lot of her own songs, and I would bet she put a lot of input into the production of this one. Just because it's not about her father doesn't mean she can't genuinely feel this song for someone else in her life or understand the sentiment. You are pretty rude. I haven't lost my father, but this song makes me bawl. PS - the video is theatrical, not fake in the sense you are implying.

Damien Rice – Me, My Yoke and I Lyrics 17 years ago
I kept wondering what he was singing when he says "this shell"... which is the lyrics you have up here, and I thought maybe he was saying "to fish on" .... "my god gave me a rod, to fish on". Are you sure it's this shell? I mean that make sense with an egg, yoke, etc, but it's hard to understand him.

Damien Rice – Coconut Skins Lyrics 17 years ago
I think all the themes are connected. My take:

First verse: Don't give away all the secrets that will make a relationship bland and unrewarding. Basically, don't become a whipped pussy; ie- roll over and die.

Second verse: Make brave decisions, don't just do whatever someone else tells you you can.

Chorus: You can be a pompous asshole who thinks he knows it all, and act like you have it all figured out. You can even figure you are one on one with God, but you're just a pretentious fool.

Third verse: You can't possibly be everything she wants, even if you try. Don't be too much of a romantic. Don't act like animal instinct is beneath you, because it's still part of you. You are most likely not having sex with her to become enlightened.

Fourth Verse: Don't spend your whole life waiting, we're all getting older and we won't be here forever.

The only thing I don't quite understand is the significance of coconut skins. Do people really eat, or lick, them? If so, then idk it just represents some mundane aspect of everyday life. And if not, maybe he's trying to say doing all these things is like licking coconut skins - unrewarding, not nourishing.

^^and that is all just my opinion, but I'm loving this song

But we fake the fuss, fracture the times.

And it makes more sense in the context of the song.

Yes, first time I heard this song (last night) I thought, "This is the best song I've heard in forever if not ever". And I'm being completely honest. This has every element of a great song and a Damien Rice song. I'm so excited for this album.

Lisa's voice is beautiful and I love when they sing duets :)

Scarlet – independent love song Lyrics 17 years ago
I loved this song for it's chorus ever since I was a little girl and heard it in the trailer to Bed of Roses on my Little Women VHS :)

I don't think it's necessarily about lesbian love. She talks about being promiscuous with men. So maybe she is in a swinging relationship, or considers all these men she's with as loving relationships? haha Idk, but the music in this song gives me goosebumps at...

"I'll show you how to take me" etc :)

Dave Matthews – Some Devil Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it could be breathing or grieving. If it says "breathing", then the meaning is just a little more hidden. I mean, I think he's trying to say I wish I died so you could know how it feels to really lose me. Either that or- I feel as though you died, so I want you to know what it feels like.

This song is awesome. The lyrics are a little bit simple, but with the music and Dave's voice, it becomes really moving. For me at least.

Corinne Bailey Rae – Like a Star Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so true. It's nice to see a love song that is more realistic. People in love fight, sometimes a lot, but it doesn't mean they aren't deeply in love with each other or that their relationship is destructive. Thanks Corinne, this is what love is all about.

Great song. I remember years ago I posted on his forum that "Is this the same lines that I've heard before" was grammatically incorrect and he changed the lyrics on the site, but yeah, I can't imagine singing it with "are", it just wouldn't sound right.

The Be Good Tanyas – Only In The Past Lyrics 17 years ago
Are you kidding me? This has got to be one of the best songs I've ever heard. The music in this song just gives me this feeling of being at a beach and sitting alone, mulling all of this over. Only a few songs give me such a real "feeling" and this is definitely one of them.

"Now you know I understand
you're with me only in the past"

^^There is something really unique about those lines even though people sing about similar things all the time. This song is about the realization instead of the aftermath of the realization and I think that helps make it so powerful.

Gin Blossoms – Not Only Numb Lyrics 17 years ago
This is quite possibly my favorite Gin Blossoms song and I never even heard it until I got their greatest hits cd. This guy has such a great voice and their lyrics are really good, they don't get enough credit.

"I'm now familiar with the tone
I hear in bed when I'm alone-
I'm not only back, I'm not only numb.
In the shade below the eaves,
think I could chain smoke anything.
I'm not only back, I'm not only numb"

is very poetic, among other lines. But those might be my favorite in the whole song because it shows more than it tells which is a great benefit.

Fort Minor – Remember The Name Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought that they were talking about a different rapper, or the icon of what a true rapper is, not themselves. Eh, it is kind of cocky to say that much great stuff about yourself, doesn't really seem humble like they're trying to say. I think it would work much better if it was about the former, what I said. Since I know now that it's in third person it's kind of more the "look at me, look how cool I am". And the line about Bleach, lol wtf is that. .. seemed like a filler line.

But I like the beat and the violin riff.

Christina Aguilera – Ain't No Other Man Lyrics 17 years ago
Stakker, just like any other celebrity, you can't know how she is in real life. Just because she kind of used to act slutty in her videos, I think it was more of a social commentary than her actually being a promiscuous std ridden slut. If you listen to still dirrty (which you probably wouldn't), she talks about the way she used to act (which is still in her) as more social commentary than anything else because she doesn't like the double standard for women... that they can't act sexual without being called a Wh*re

Jack Johnson – No Other Way Lyrics 18 years ago
I think whoever said the first verse is about his pregnant wife and the second about a dying friend at a hospital had it right. After rereading the lyrics with that in mind, it fits perfectly and it's like the cycle of life. One life comes into the world, the world being awake for "somebodys" sake. And then at the end about resolve and reason, it's sad like someone's death that is unexplainable.

My fav song on the album and just a great song in general!

I'm not a necessarily religious person and I can see the religious symbolism in this. The talk of incarnation, revenant (verbally similar to reverent even), the number three (the trinity), etc....

For God's sake a revenant is someone who comes back after a long absence ... aka as Jesus is supposed to...

Jason Mraz – Plane Goes Down Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it means he fell in love in 24hrs, Foxygen. I interpreted "Even only 24 hours under your touch, you know I need you so much" just as saying even if I can only come and visit you for 24 hours (bc he's a musician with a hectic schedule), ithe time they share is really fulfilling.

Jimmy Eat World – 23 Lyrics 18 years ago
I wish people didn't minimalize this song to a "love song" The best lines in this song are the general lines of human insight, like "I won't always love these selfish things" and "You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time" and even "I'm still driving away, and I'm sorry everyday". I think these 3 lines are by far the most powerful in the whole song.

I wish people wouldn't automatically assume every song out there that COULD be IS a love song. Love songs have their place and are great, but some songs just mean so much more, and this song means SO much more. I love this song. It's absolutely beautiful. (love the strings).

This song reminds me of Oasis' "Don't Go Away" and Jason Mraz' new one "Plane." Jack's Mannequin – La La Lie Lyrics 18 years ago
Hmm. Initially I thought the song was about how his friends have lied to him and his girlfriend has done something to upset him, but I am beginning to wonder if maybe it's about his friends lying to him saying stuff like "It'll get better" etc to help him feel better when they know that really his girlfriend is a b*tch and his situation sucks.

I figure this song was written before he found out he had leukemia but the part that goes "I doubt the doctors are wrong, so I'll wait by a palm tree" that leads into the chorus also made me think about how all his friends were probably trying to cheer him up when he was in the hospital.

Jack's Mannequin – The Mixed Tape Lyrics 18 years ago
This song probably originated from the frustration of having the person you once loved become an enemy sorta (breaking into his house, etc). I've never really been in that situation of love turned to hate and having to deal with that change, but I'm sure it's hard and you almost feel like the person hasn't just changed, but become someone else entirely and it's just like "where is the person I used to know?" I've had a few friends like this, but never a significant other...

Jack's Mannequin – Kill The Messenger Lyrics 18 years ago
On a different note than these comments are taking, and in the direction of the purpose of this website, what do you guys see as the meaning of this song?

I'm not usually stumped when I analyze lyrics, but I can't seem to figure out what I think this song is about exactly. The verses seem to be about somebody who's really upset with their life, feeling lonely and disoriented. The chorus seems like maybe he is trying to convince the girl he's singing about that he didn't do something that he is rumored to have done... but I'm not sure. And why would he be sending her rain to make her feel lonely if he is trying to convince her that he's innocent and she's a "good girl"?? I guess maybe he wants her to feel like he does so she can understand where he's coming from, but I don't really know. I'm just guessing. Haha.

Any more ideas??

Missy Higgins – They weren't there Lyrics 19 years ago
My personal interpretation is that maybe it's falling in love again after a bad relationship and the person is telling her to forget the one who hurt her. She repeats almost the same sentiment in the second verse but it says "they said". I don't know, maybe it's all metaphorical, but maybe the second verse is people telling her that this new guy is going to hurt her too and the whole song is just about the dependency of love, you know? When you're in love it's easy to get caught up in the moment and in the feeling and leave common sense behind... I love this song. It's so beautiful.
