Arcade Fire – Month of May Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is not very 'Arcade Fire' like but I am completely in love with it. The whole album is so immediately listenable which I didn't find with Neon Bible - much more of a 'grower' which is fine too.
I never thought of it as having an 80s feel but maybe in retrospect that's the case - maybe that's why I love it as I am a massive fan of 80s music.

Renewal and regeneration seem like the themes here but I am so unsure about the majority of the lyrics!

Interpol – Slow Hands Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was amazing live last night - yes, it is more mainstream than the others but so what. Interpol are hardly a mainstrem band so good on them if more people can apprecaite their other music just by hearing one song! The lyrics are amazing in this regradless of people commenting on their 'immaturity'.

Marina and the Diamonds – I Am Not a Robot Lyrics 14 years ago
I bloody love this song - 'you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins...' what a line!

It is about humanity I think - admitting you are human and vulnarable and strange is all part of it. I mean - who is normal? What is normal?

Lady GaGa – Alejandro Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmm - if you can verify the lines then I will add them to the lyrics. I always thought it wasn't 'one cigarette more' and I think you guys are right about it being 'hush' on the end of that line. I just changed it as so many others claimed it was 'more'!

Lady GaGa – Bad Romance Lyrics 14 years ago
You can't really analyse these lyrics in detail beacuse they aren't particulalry profound - however, she's a great Pop star and this is a great pop song. Her music is catchy, interesting and she's influenced by all the great Pop artists of the past - which is so apparent in her sound. So don't just come on here to slag her off - what's the point? Go and post something about an artist you actually like!

I am kinda loving this song and can't get it out of my head - all I've heard is her SNL snippet and the leaked demo version - looking forward to the new one being released!

Grammatics – The Vague Archive Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one song that I cannot stop listening to.

I definitely agree cambt236. The references to time fit perfectly with the dramatic change in tempo - it's perfect in that way.

White Lies – Farewell to the Fairground Lyrics 15 years ago
It's got that real 80s New Wave Krautrock kinda feel I think? Almost like Bauhaus and Echo and the Bunnymen amalgamated...

Thanks for that - I've been waiting for ages for someone who knew the lyrics!! When I posted the song it wasn't on ANY lyrics website so I just typed out what I heard. Thanks again :)

Laura Marling – My Manic and I Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree witgh clairemuziks - I always thought that it was about manic depression, not about a releationship between two people. It's the two sides of her in the song that she cannot control:

I can’t control you, I don’t know you well
These are the reasons I think that you’re ill

And also when she keeps saying, 'And I don't believe him' - because it's almost not true as it's only half of the personality that's saying it, so she's right not to believe.

The 40 film noir detective comes into my head also - but it's almost like he's supposed to be tracking
her for some reason, but he's fallen for her.

I thought it was 'fancy man' not mind?

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Definitely the best version of this song.

The music and his voice comepletely compliment each othe r- the guitar to me is very Johnny Marr-esque. I love it.

Not just that - he's totally neglecting her...for his car! He obviously loves his car more than her, hence all of the words in the semantic field of err, cars!

I saw that a few months back - but I prefer this version.

The Bluetones – Solomon Bites The Worm Lyrics 16 years ago
Yep, you're spot on there.

A man in a dress - the priest who baptises him and obviously if your worm food you're dead for his Sunday event.

For those of you who don't know the nursery rhyme...

Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday.
That was the end of
Solomon Grundy.

The Ting Tings – Shut Up and Let Me Go Lyrics 16 years ago
It's damn catchy really - I can't stop listening to it!

No big implicit lyrics here - very self explanatory. They break up, he broke her heart, he wants her back - she's having none of it as she's over him and can see right through him.

Interpol – No I in Threesome Lyrics 16 years ago
I also do not believe the song is referring to a literal 'threesome', but more of a metaphorical one.

There's something missing in the relationship and although 'life is wine' could refer to life getting better with age/as you go on with a partner, it's almost like he is saying 'oh life is wine' - life should be getting better but it's not for me - he's trying to convince himself that it should be progressing. And then, the 'maybe it's time...' part is him realising that it really isn't, it isn't working and something has to change.

I hope my decyphering makes sense! I adore this song and it definitely improves with every listen. It reminds me a little of 'The Bleeding Heart Show' (by The New Pornographers) in the way that it builds up, even though the songs aren't alike at all.

Well Morrissey influences many people (I used to be a massive fan!), but at the same time, many people use the phrase 'My name is trouble'. I'm not sure - we need a few more references!!

The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics 16 years ago
JackBurton - how did you get it to say that you posted in 1983???!

I think it's about a hooker or just a very promiscuous woman - I don't really se why it could be about drugs, there are too many ambiguous references to sex.

Nightmare Of You – My Name Is Trouble Lyrics 16 years ago
You know what...i know what you mean - it is kind of 'sexy'!

I cannot stop listening to this at the moment.

It's all so cliche to say that I understand the lyrics, cause it's happened to me but I guess I can relate to some of it in in a way. I agree with heartcrimes representation of the lyrics - to me that's what it's about.

The National – Mistaken for Strangers Lyrics 16 years ago
It's my favourite song by them...

To me, it's about viewing the world in a very negative way, losing innocence, seeing the terrible things that happen in the 'real' world and making that transition.

So basically, I've just written all of that, then scanned through other's comments and seen that you've said that all already!

Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – Thou Shalt Always Kill Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's all deliberate. He's constantly contradicting himself and constantly being ironic. Why tell us all these things and then ask us to think for ourselves? It's all for the effect.

I think it sounds more like a Decemberists' song rather than Bright eyes.

The New Pornographers – Challengers Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps so zeeb - I think it works quite nicely if it isn't completely literal, as if they're dreaming that they can run away together. yet, they both know it can't happen. I think I prefer that!!

submissions
The New Pornographers – Challengers Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree about the affair - but I think it's more that that. They're on the verge of running away thus the line, 'until we clear the accounts' and then they'll head into the unknown together.

Neko Case – Hold On, Hold On Lyrics 16 years ago
I absolutley adore this song...to me I just think the wedding part is more of a metaphor for an unhappy bride, having to take valium to get through her wedding - and this mirrors her own feelings towards life and love. Love isn't a happy thing for the narrator or the bride.

submissions
The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show Lyrics 16 years ago
I totally agree - it give me chills when it reaches the climax, and then towards the end, the repetition of 'We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show' just gets me every time!

submissions
Immaculate Machine – Secret Affliction Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought at first that the line was 'the vice that holds its grip on me'. For some reason, I think it makes more sense as it then holds a double meaning. The love she hold is her only vice, and then also literally as in the vice that grips things. I kind of like that ambiguity!

The Oohlas – Small Parts Lyrics 17 years ago
It's on the Spiderman album :( That makes me upset cause I've been lovely this song for a year now and it's going to get overrated now!

I think the 'paint me violet and shake the red out' is more about the colours. Violet is made up of red and blue, so if you shake the red out, you're left with blue, which symbolises sadness, i.e 'feeling blue'. That's my favourite line - it's just an amazing song.

Definite classic - in a kind of cheesy way - I never knew it was about Thatcher - puts an interesting spin on the lyrics now you've mentioned that!

Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip – Thou Shalt Always Kill Lyrics 17 years ago
It's Desmond Dekker - the missing surname. The Pixies are missing from the band list.

I do like some of the things he's saying...but doesn't he contradict himself by saying 'thou shalt always think for yourselves' ? I guess it's supposed to be ironic, these things are usually intentional! Some of those references though are right on the money - such as 'izzit' - my God, I hate that sooo much!

Sia – Paranoid Android (Radiohead cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I do know what you mean - I do feel a sense of duty to claim that this is blasphamy against the Radiohead original - but I just think that the ending is so beautiful. The rest is sub-standard, but from 'rain down' I really like.

Amy Winehouse – Rehab Lyrics 17 years ago
She cracks me up...she has the most amazing singing voice, yet when she talks - you cannot believe that THAT voice comes out. Her singing has that classic motown/60s girl group feel to it. Anyone see her on Buzzcocks? I love the Jewish banter between her and Simon Amstell!

Boy Kill Boy – It's Different For Girls Lyrics 17 years ago
It was the wierdest thing...I heard it was a b-side to Suzie (and I still don't know if this is true!) and I went looking everywhere in town for the single, but it had just left the charts so I couldn't find it in any of the shops. Feeling defeated, I decided to just buy the latest Q magazine instead as it had a free CD of 80s covers...and guess what was on there! Was very freaky! :]

The New Pornographers – The Laws Have Changed Lyrics 17 years ago
It is an amazing piece of poetry - as are the majority on the NPs songs. This was the first one I ever heard and I got totally hooked. And I love the fact that it's speaking negatively about Bush - and it's not even that obvious. Fantastic!

Also, don't you just love how the male and female voices totally compliment each other? Neko sounds awesome on this record.

Fall Out Boy – A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More "Touch Me" Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know if someone's put this before as I haven't read all 100+ posts but the title is refering to both Samantha from 'Sixteen Candles' and Samantha Fox - the page 3 girl who sang the song 'Touch Me' .

It's basically saying, be a little less like Sam from 16 candles (i.e. possibly a bit frigid!), and a little more sexy and possibly more outgoing, like Sam Fox. Sam Fox for those who don't know regualrly got her boobs out on many occassions in the papers over here in the UK! I'm basically assuming that he wants less innocence, more dirty-ness!

submissions
Bettie Serveert – Lover I Don't Have To Love Lyrics 17 years ago
I do like both versions, but there is just something about this one that makes me prefer it - I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's beacuse the female voice makes it sound more powerful beacuse it isn't cliched, whereas for a guy to want to hook up for just sex is kinda stereotypical - anyway, amazing song, really fitted well within the OC episode that it was featured in.

Shiny Toy Guns – You Are The One Lyrics 17 years ago

Apparently he's off the drugs now and doing ok!
