Delta Goodrem – Believe Again Lyrics 15 years ago
Srsly? I thought this song was by Texas - it sounds like that singer. I'm astounded that it's by Ms. Goodrem... coz most of her songs Drive. Me. Crazy. with all her wailing and sappy lyrics.

Forgive me for expressing my opinion. Now that I've done so, I will say that I like this song. It's emotionally mature and comfortingly honest.

Evermore – Running Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems to me that it's about coping with life and trying not to get hurt. Could apply to any problem a person undergoes; relationships or otherwise.

"Step away, turn around, let my feet hit the ground running" ... To recognise the danger in the situation and get out before it ruins you.

"We don't have to learn everything twice" ... Once in observation and once in the experience... if we keep our eyes open at all in this life we know how things can go wrong, and we can learn to avoid it. Perhaps the smart thing to do is to try to learn from the mistakes we see others make.

"And you sink and you drown 'til your feet hit the ground running" ... We live through the same errors over again, but do we learn from them?

The Beautiful South – Rotterdam (Or Anywhere) Lyrics 17 years ago
For some reason I always assumed this song was about people working in a office, driving each other cray-zee. *shrug*

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't believe how mind-numbingly insincere and depressing this song feels to me. How could it possibly be uplifting? I can see what it's trying to achieve, but in no way am I on the same wavelength. It sounds more like "let's commit suicide together"; lovers completely turning their back on life.

Richard Ashcroft – Music is Power Lyrics 17 years ago
I heard this song (and a couple others of his) at work, and thought it was some old, odd song by Tom Petty. His voice is just as annoying.

submissions
Nickelback – Savin' Me Lyrics 17 years ago
*SO* contrived. To me it's just pop music... they don't really feel it. The lead siger's voice could be pleasant and rythmic, but he just grinds it to sound extra anxsty. Bah humbug.

Sheryl Crow – Soak Up The Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
I pick and choose my favourites when it comes to Sheryl Crow. This isn't one of them. I've seen a lot of you folks say this song sounds happy, relaxed, upbeat... to me she just sounds bored, which makes me bored too. If Sheryl were any more relaxed here she'd be comatose.

Dragon – Are You Old Enough Lyrics 17 years ago
I dunno, this song just seems kinda dorky to me... he's been in jail and he gets out, sees a young girl on the street and feels horny... takes her home. So what? why make a song about it? I get a lot of mondegreens from this song, too - I thought it was "not a moment to lose", not "got a whole lot to lose"; and "got the motown blues", not " got the moondog blues"... Blahety.

Natalie Merchant – Frozen Charlotte Lyrics 17 years ago
I've listened to this song many many times, and loved it as a perfectly serene song of winter. But looking at it now, it has just occurred to me what it could be about - the chord it suddenly strikes in me.

It's Persephone singing to her mother, Demeter, as she is taken away each year to the underworld. The depth of mourning which they feel, mother and daughter, as the harsh reality of their world forces them apart, as the daughter of spring grows up and meets her fate. It's almost as if the daughter has been so disillusioned that she's become older than the mother, and is trying to protect her from what she has to endure - "Follow... don't follow me, to where I have gone."

I've wondered before why those early cultures felt the desire to create such elaborate mythologies to follow the great mysteries of nature, but here, perhaps I can understand that desire.

Sarah McLachlan – Mary Lyrics 17 years ago
Now and then I stop and *really* listen to this song and realise how much it touches my heart. I do believe it's something to do with THAT Mary, though here's an alternative perspective...

I see Mary as a subtle, compassionate and nurturing face of the goddess, and I see that many people identify with her for those qualities, with or without reference to her as "The Virgin" or "The Holy Mother". Try thinking of the mother of Christ as a simple woman, but a deeply enlightened one who, after her great purpose in bearing the messiah was over, she was perhaps forgotten and pushed aside. It's only later that we can begin to appreciate her for herself, as a selfless and loving mother.

But this song strikes a chord in me that says, What if Mary were to come back to the world today, or in any of the ages of man, to look at us and what we've done with the world, and feel confusion and despair? How many people would get past our modern cynicism to see her goodness mirrored in ourselves, to be selfless and compassionate as she was?

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 18 years ago
This song drives me crazy!! To me (as a daughter) it just seems so unbearably patronising... something about John Mayer's usual style of supposedly earnest, overly-meaningful lyrics in that sappy oh-so-sensitive voice... argh. I don't care if he IS earnest and sensitive; I think he overdid it here and I don't care to be sung to about women and and/or psychology in this way. *shrug*

Paul Simon – Loves Me Like a Rock Lyrics 18 years ago
A very groovy song. He's growing/grown up, he's successful and proud, he's avoided his demons or weaknesses and he can do all of this because his literal or figurative Mother is the strength he falls back upon. I like it.

And yet I can't help but mishear the line in the second verse as "I'm a constipated man"... Teehee.

Savage Garden – The Animal Song Lyrics 18 years ago
Also not my favourite SG song, and I hear it too often, yet I still like it! It's lyrics are corny but positive, it makes me heppeh... it reminds me, I always meant to check out that movie, The Other Sister.

Mary Mary – Shackles (praise You) Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not Christian and I only just learned that this is a Christian kinda song... but strangely that makes me like it more than I thought I did! I could say this is the most groovy religious song I've heard - it's got such excellent simplicity and honesty. I just wanna praise it...

Joni Mitchell – Big Yellow Taxi Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm having one of those moments when you realise your stupidity... I never understood the last verse; I thought it was about someone abducting her father - that's what the phrase 'old man' immediately brings to MY mind - and I couldn't figure out how it had anything to do with the rest of the song. Yeah, call me a twit.

Sarah McLachlan – Sweet Surrender Lyrics 18 years ago
It's funny how a matter of moments can change one's concept of a piece of music... I never liked this song until I saw/heard it in concert... There was a screen behind the stage on which they projected different abstract pictures for the songs, and the first few notes in Sweet Surrender were perfectly synchronised with bolts of lightning. The awesome but simple imagery struck me (so to speak) with the raw honesty of this song. I love it now. And I'm glad of that.

Clannad – In A Lifetime Lyrics 19 years ago
I once read, I forget where, that this song was an impulsive one, inspired by a storm that was raging one night on their way to the recording studio. As a simple celebration of the wild elements of nature it's wonderful to begin with. Yet it can also adapt to various meanings one may want to give it, since it's so full of emotion and energy.

As an aside, the few quiet bars of music at the very start of this song always remind me of the background music in the movie Labyrinth, which kind of sets the mood for me, and only makes me love it more.

Billy Joel – Pressure Lyrics 19 years ago
I can't believe how bad this song is. There's virtually no meaning to it; just some scratchy synthesized supposed-music to set the uncomfortable atmosphere, and Billy growling a few annoying lyrics, making himself sound ugly. Guh!

The Waifs – London Still Lyrics 19 years ago
I've only ever heard the live version of this song (and all Waifs songs, from A Brief History) but that seems to be where they're at their best, nonetheless. This song's got great moood.

I must say I wish my favourite song, Gillian, had been accepted on this site though. :(

The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics 19 years ago
The song's meaning is easy enough to follow, and you folks have made it even more clear by now. But I don't understand why they say "put all the blame on VCR"... when they're talking about music videos on TV, video cassette recorders (VCRs) are irrelevant! It really bugs me, because they only used the term 'VCR' for a cheap way to make the song rhyme, though it makes no sense. But I suppose it only bothers me so because the whole song bugs me intensely and gets stuck in my head all the time. Argh.

Simply Red – Sunrise Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't much like the video; it kinda makes Mick look sleazy... but I know the song sounds groovy over the loudspeaker at work, past the drone of supermarket noise. (How sad is that? Not really a song 'meaning'; apologies.)

Delta Goodrem – Lost Without You Lyrics 19 years ago
It's not pop, it's PAP... sappy, stupid, melodramatic, insincere, blonde, aussie pap music with no meaning. It makes me sick. I'll never understand why Delta Goodrem is as popular as she is. After all, she came from 'Neighbours', that abomination of a TV show from the eighties... how can anyone take her seriously?!

Led Zeppelin – Black Dog Lyrics 19 years ago
I didn't even like this song until I stopped scrutinising the lyrics, and just started enjoying the music. And I still don't care 'what it's about'. Heh. ^_^

Split Enz – Six Months In A Leaky Boat Lyrics 19 years ago
I've only heard this song a couple of times. It occurred to me that the lyric 'six months in a leaky boat' is a reference to early settlers sailing to New Zealand. But of course the song could easily have some other, metaphorical meaning; perhaps it's an analogy to some modern matter in the musician's life... *shrug*

Sarah McLachlan – Time Lyrics 19 years ago
Time has to be one of my favourites on the Afterglow album. (So I was seriously disappointed when she didn't include it in the concert I attended!)

Perhaps it's not a complex song like many of her others, but it doesn't need to be... it's basically a cry for solitude and the peace of it, when someone's been hounding you and forcing you to fight with them over nothing, seemingly for the sake of conflict alone. I sometimes feel like this.

Sarah McLachlan – Blackbird Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh, how I wish I could listen to Sarah's version of this song! I know she'd do it so wonderfully. It's a beautiful, poetic song and the Beatles' original version brings tears to my eyes every time I listen.

Sarah McLachlan – Adia Lyrics 19 years ago
I suppose this song could be about/to a friend, any friend, who was having trouble believing in herself. We all need such reassurance sometimes - someone to tell us we're on the right path, even if it feels like we're stumbling. I especially love the reassurance "we are born innocent" - a good affirmation against the idea that we are all born sinful, and remain sinful. Such a gentle, positive song.

Ace of Base – All That She Wants Lyrics 19 years ago
Jeez, I can't believe how stupid I was - I always thought this was some bizarre song about a woman who wanted a _baby_ - literally. The colloquial use of 'baby' did not occur to me with regards to this song. Another lover. So I always just thought it was an extremely odd song about an extremely weird woman. HA!

Collective Soul – The World I Know Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know how you can say Collective Soul are religious in general... though perhaps I have a limited knowledge of their work; maybe they have more religious lyrics than I know.

Anyway, I can certainly understand how each person sees (or rather hears) what they need in a song, be it religious meaning or anything else.

Personally I just love this song for its honesty/realism in the face of harsh humanity. And I was lucky enough to catch the music video on TV the other day - beautiful! - it brought tears to my eyes. Simple but powerful symbols like the bird, as a reminder of hope.

Nelly Furtado – I'm Like A Bird Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song has already been sufficiently explained, so I'm only here to recommend that you try the unplugged/acoustic version... it's less edgy than the original; you can hear the tenderness, the heartbreak. Beautiful.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Iris Lyrics 22 years ago
I can relate to the line "And you can't fight the tears that ain't comin'"... it describes a feeling of helplessness, when you think you should be touched by something and yet your eyes are dry. Like, 'where are my emotions?'

The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics 22 years ago
For a song with a rock beat it amazes me how tender and touching this is; a poem. I wasn't aware of the drug references... and they make it no less beautiful.

Tori Amos – '97 Bonnie and Clyde (Eminem cover) Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree with EmoKiddie: it's very intense. I wonder whether the song stems from anything in Eminem's reality.
