mewithoutYou – The Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie Lyrics 15 years ago
So the baker is the parent and he offers up the narrator as his sweet goods like children ready to be guided or stolen. the clever fox represents cunning and humility. the crow is alternatively impatient, hungry, and far too proud for his own good. once the crow grabs the treat the fox was going for, the fox preys on this weakness by getting him to open his mouth, sing of himself, and simultaneously drop the treats he stole. while the crow is trapped in his proud reverie and the fox makes off with the treat, it (the candy, etc) begins to reflect on its form and finally how it became so: "When letting all attachments go is the only prayer we know, may it be so". This means that the narrator knows nothing but to pray to be guided into the right hands (as an innocent, motionless cookie), trusting that he'll end up somewhere favorable (in this case away from the obnoxious crow and into the fox's more deserving hands). So a parable about pride and probably more. animal and food metaphors make for a happy album. great song.

The Faint – The Geeks Were Right Lyrics 16 years ago
minus that chunk in the middle of the song, the first/last verses are pretty cryptic...but I think they stick with the whole oppressed-spirit-in-mechanical-future thing, speaking of natural qualities and additions to now misused or unused body parts and perverted environment-fuckers: eyeballs in healthy, now forgotten grass, a chainsaw that runs off of rain instead of gas. There is also mention of the classic composer Bach (I assume) which makes those eyes surprised or fearful and (the possibly "big" as in expanding) sun going down causing eyelids to open up: fuck the sunlight. I think these images are the time-travelling dreams of someone living in the shitty robo-future: He gets to grind his teeth (anger at the mess) and somehow peek backward through time in his dreams, when things weren't as plastic.

But "teeth" could be referring to the teeth of the chainsaw, which would imply that the chainsaw choir is his regressed anger, multiplied "in dreams that bend" his reality.

Whereas the freight elevator that he travels forward in could imply that his instinct dream-brain hasn't lost all hope and is looking for that change back to "wild feedback". But this isn't resolved in the song.

It's vague and abstract and it's new Faint and I fucking love it.

Jaguar Love – The Man with the Plastic Suns Lyrics 16 years ago
after the story, the only thing left to our imagination in this song are the "let's race the desert/badlands" lines throughout and the "the desert is laughing/mourning" line at the end.

I think the desert, clearly where the Sun is the most prominent, represents TMWTPS's hideout/background conspirator of sorts.

let's race the desert/badlands=escape the silly mob boss
is laughing=at the musician's suicide
is mourning=over the death of TMWTPS.

Tilly and the Wall – Cacophony Lyrics 16 years ago
[Cacophony, how long will it be] until "our" dull Christian lives are stimulated?!

two stiff fingers for a left right blessing = that "sign of the cross" Christians do over their chests. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, you know.

I picture a smoky northeastern town being prodded at with this song. Where the fathers cough with the sitcoms while the mothers forever gaze out of kitchen windows. It might be from their children's perpective, asking why it's so dull as they "confess", but I think it could be any bored Christian-born.

Tool – Third Eye Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm a little disappointed to find out that, starting with the quote at the beginning, this is not satire. I was hoping the message was going to be that deep and abstract music like Tool's can be made without the influence of drugs "and this is the proof of it". As far as I can tell from this song, its lyrics, and reading many of your comments, the answer is NOPE!

The Mars Volta is a good example of a drugless music-making experience, but again, I can't be completely sure of that. Only hope.

The Mars Volta – Soothsayer Lyrics 16 years ago
my theory is that cedric made up all of this "soothsayer told me to sing it" nonsense as an excuse or scapegoat for his ridiculously abstract lyrics. not that that's a bad thing. I love his lyrics, but even he has claimed that most of their song titles are fabricated at random and that he cares more about how he sings according to the music, not what he sings.

he truly is the king artist of sadness for content! the conflict of course is not only maintaining it, but feeling false for instigating it. if it is truly 'sorrow', then why would it be desired? "it must not be genuine" now, after being placed into a song that collects cash and attention. maybe not for those sakes, however.

oh, and the guitar is beautiful too.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your Heart Is an Empty Room Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song has more to do with being stuck in your own environment than being in a relationship. Even the meager four lines of the song that do refer to a girl are also referring to the idea that because she finally gave in to the "pursuer"'s interest, "he" is bored with having yet another one of his needs "settled". Same goes for all of the crap he's collected throughout his life. Everything's built for this moment of "ah...finally"...but when it comes, he's unsatisfied. Here, there is minimal danger or excitement. A nice, stable girlfriend, a city apartment with cool stuff...it's boring. "To not be alone": There are more possibilities that will allow him to experience excitement and love, and he knows it. This is why he's grateful for all of that useless stuff burning away. This may even include his stable girlfriend, in a metaphorical form.

"His" heart is an empty room to be filled again. Maybe with more temporary items this time, unless he hopes for another metaphorical fire to free him.

Rod Stewart – Young Turks Lyrics 16 years ago
This song was a tearjerker for me when I first listened to the lyrics over a fake radio station on the video game GTA: San Andreas. Here it is, in all of it's glorified catchiness and epic choruses, and here I am, a young person doing exactly the opposite of the characters described.

Great song, love the breakdowns the most. I think 'turks' are something like 'punks'. If not, they're "native inhabitants of Turkey". Hm.

Gogol Bordello – Oh No Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is great. The idea of simple disasters being our chance for redemption: The sudden adventure and danger and excitement of a blackout, for those who aren't too deep into the delusions of electricity (I'm not saying I ain't). The intimacy and carefree need for one another when a natural disaster rips our sad little homes apart. The beautiful, untouched contrast of all of these elements suddenly bursting over a consistent, dull suburban lifestyle. What intrigues me the most about this idea is the After: Once the power is restored and policeman points at our former homes, telling us to return, back to our primetime TV and fast food and celebrity facts and meticulous lawncare...What will we do? Will this finally be "IT"? THE Revolution that "lets" us abandon our petty devotions inside? Hah. This idea, into which Eugene doesn't delve (he sings that this carefree mutiny could happen anytime, anywhere...but doesn't address any thought of opposition or the After) I think should itself be abandoned. There isn't "one moment" when true freedom will occur. It's happening now and deep inside the little moments that let us feel that almost-untouchable and feral unknown pleasure, such as these blackouts Eugene mentions. True revolutions happen in the head, and spread.

Also, there's something about the wavering in vocals in the way they sing "oh no" on 1:42 that reminds me a lot of the Dead Kennedys. Then again, this band as a whole really reminds me of them.

Dead Kennedys – The Man with the Dogs Lyrics 16 years ago
As I first listened to this song, I interpreted it as an attack on not "stuffy, right-wing, elitist tight-wads" versus the whole freeform punk scene, but instead on the in-betweens - the not-yet initiated to either side (if Jello actually saw them, I don't know). I think the narrator is pointing out the phoniness and insecurity of one who mimicks without embracing any side. He is escaping the Man with the Dogs, who has come to rat him out to the world: He is nothing inside! An imposter with a punk's mask, a businessman's mask!

Interpol – Not Even Jail Lyrics 17 years ago
I think when Interpol's lyrics turn towards girls and love, things go sour. This is why I love the beginning of this song:

"If things come alive" is his hope against his excuse to be excitable. Since things around him are dull, so shall he be. If things "come alive", so will he (paint houses). And discover a reason to be moral and peaceful: "I promise to commit no acts of violence,
Be it physical or otherwise"

This idea is wrapped up by the lines:
"Remember take hold of your time here
Give some meanings to the means
To your end.
Not even jail."

Which is an obvious reference towards making the most of one's life and time: Even if the means are ironically performed for the sake of dying ("to your end").

"Not even jail" suggests 'his' reality: Trapped in houses, his life doesn't have to be this purposeless, boring prison where nothing out of the ordinary ever happens.

The talk of girls is obviously the hints of longing he mentioned in:
"We marshal in the days of longing,
We tremble like anyone's children,
And wink towards the fire."
Which I believe is his new focus, now accepting his prison and making further statements about it for the rest of the song.

The Blood Brothers – Camouflage, Camouflage Lyrics 17 years ago
"i couldn't see the skeletal lightning,
it was camouflaged as a young machete." I believe this sums up the theme of this album as well as these common, abstract metaphors: skeletal lightning is their name for pure and positive energy in youth, put to passionate and loving ideals and actions... whereas a young machete may be an opposite of this: a cruel, wasteful, dangerously uncaring young person: exactly the kind of "demographic" these lyrics seem to be trying to help change, or even cure.
