Joy Division – Atmosphere Lyrics 19 years ago
the (+) and (-) symbols in the video were, i believe, simply the opposing forces that make nature and the "ATMOSPHERE" so perfect. the hoods, if you noticed were black and white. i don't think this is one of those things that needs too deep of an explanation- it's just beautiful, as gay and artsy as that may be. i watched 24 hr party people and when the part came with this video, i was basically in tears. not that i cared that deeply about ian curtis- i do love joy division- but it was just humanity and human life celebrated i felt. i was never an art guy, but i just really connected with it- i think it's easy to connect to, that's the beauty of it. point is- this is the one song i think that maybe should just be left alone. it is truly perfect. i get chills every time i put this song on.

Thursday – Ian Curtis Lyrics 19 years ago
good call strunkthe drunk. However I love this song, but that's ok, it's all opinion. I love how they incorporate all these joy division titles and lyrics in their own song. Joy Division is so fucking awesome, basically words don't do justice, but it's nice that somebody appreciated them in this way and it's a nice little homage. Also, on a more personal level, I don't know if this may be something else he was going for- I know when I'm feeling down, I tend to throw on the Joy Division CDs. He may be getting at that as well.

Stiff Little Fingers – Suspect Device Lyrics 19 years ago
First time I ever heard this song, it was in a bootleg video and the Casualties were covering it. I was 14 and "punk as fuck" and I got so excited I nearly pissed my pants. This song is excellent and always brings those feelings back to me- brings me back to when music meant everything to me.

Bouncing Souls – Kate Is Great Lyrics 19 years ago
LOL. The Bouncing Souls are one of those bands that I will never attempt to categorize, because for me, they transcend all that bullshit. As far as the whole punk thing- I gave up caring about that years ago, but OakScreenName, you need to calm down or you're gonna end up bitter just like me. Not cool man. It's nice to have something to care about, but when you care too much about something that just don't matter, by the time you have things that are worth worrying about (career, family) you're gonna be too fuckin exhausted. Live and let live, pal.

On the lighter side of things, as I said- For me, this band transcends all genre labels. They bring me back always. As a matter of fact, my buddy AJ put them on in the car one day, and for years he has been telling me to lighten up, calm down, and it wasn't helping. When he put them on the radio, he started screaming "YES!!!! YES!!!!!! YOU'RE NOT DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!" Because I became 15 years old again for a few minutes. It was awesome. I fucking love this band.

actually, 1completeidiot, it's not even instruments- it's atom and his "package". the package is some kind of synthesizer that he programs all his tunes into. this dude used to play at ABC No Rio in the Lower East Side when I was in high school. I always missed him, but he rocks the house.

The Business – Blind Justice Lyrics 19 years ago
Excellent song. It's pretty obvious what it's about, but I'm not sure who exactly this was written for. I'm fairly certain that this was some kind of high profile court case in which the defendant was railroaded and presumed to be innocent by the general public, probably in England. Holla!

Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence Lyrics 19 years ago
COME ON!!!!!! Just because he says "All I ever needed is here in my arms" You guys think it's about heroin. DICKS. First of all- Heroin is ALMOST ALWAYS referred to as a male. Second of all there is nothing else to indicate that this is about heroin. This song is about an interpersonal relationship between a man and a woman. You people know fucking ZERO about junkies, and you should be happy that you don't. But don't pretend to know what the fuck you're talking about.

Dead Kennedys – Moon Over Marin Lyrics 20 years ago
i first heard heard/saw this song in a skate video when i was like 14, and immediately it was like falling in love with a girl. this song hit me right in between the eyes, and coupled with the skating happening in the video it was just one of the most intense multimedia experiences i can recall in my life. now i'm 21 and an EMT in NYC, and i still love this song, even though i've "grown out" of most of the more extreme punk rock i used to be into. but for some reason when i hear this song, i just picture jello biafra dressed in army dress greens (or is it air force?) with sergeant's stripes, just clumsily walking along the beach which is rotting and disgusting with bodies laying all over and he's just like all dopey looking and he shakes his head at the mess before him, then walks along a busy expressway, through filthy streets, back to his house which looks a lot like the house a kid i grew up with lived in, and he goes into the basement which is old linoleum and exposed bare pipes with a giant barracuda on the wall and there's of course a wooden tub which he sleeps in, with his army hat on. i know it offers absolutely no insight, but i get a kick out of the mental image. haha.

Minor Threat – Look Back and Laugh Lyrics 21 years ago
Growing up is funny. Couple of friends of mine who I've known for like 5-6 years were playing in a band, and did a Minor Threat cover set at a show in some shitty bar on a Sunday afternoon, and we all had hangovers after carousing together after not seeing each other in at least a year. So we don't keep too closely in contact. And these guys aren't really the greatest or even most loyal friends there are. Honestly, they're not even CLOSE friends. But they're friends. Point is- No matter how weak the relationship, I think I will remember the feeling of that stupid weekend from now til the day I die when I hear Minor Threat, cuz I'll picture them playing it.

GREAT GREAT GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember hearing this song for the first time about 5 or 6 years ago in a 411 skat video. Like fine wine, the essence of this song only intensifies with age. However, it is through one's own age that this song appreciates in meaning. Oh mama. Words just don't do it justice. What an amazing song, yet so simple.

Nas – One Mic Lyrics 21 years ago
for the record, reading my comment that i posted possibly close to a year ago now, i stand behind most of what I originally said, except for the part about moving out of the projects. that was unfair. people come from different situations and have to make ends meet in the face of obstacles that some people only see in their nightmares. point being, justaMT, i'm sorry if i offended you, because i do believe that you're a hard-working and honest kid and a good son who's doing what he can. and i sincerely believe that your mother works her ass off to give you, her, and any siblings you may have a better life. what i was trying to say in my original comment wasn't meant to sound so callous and cold. anyway, i'm attempting to affirm that i am compassionate to these things, even if i didn't come across that way. and MT, i'm apologizing to you specifically, because i believe that you are an honest worker, and doing what you have to do is something that should be respected, and i came off voicing what sounded like an opinion that i hate.

Nah. I think this is all about being a bored teenager. Every night is kind of boring and pointless, except when the night still has a couple of good hours in it, there is still potential ("The connection that you feel when the night has not yet died With the promise of a love... etc.") for good things to happen and for your mood to be turned around.

Jethro Tull – Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of a New Day) Lyrics 21 years ago
Definite religious overtones, here. Back in the year one... pants undone (metaphorical-apple, literal-naked, shame)
Bred for humanity, forced into society, definitely Adam and Eve. Pretty obvious, the song's a contemplation of life, wasted time, sin, spirituality, and God's role in it all in relation to us. The title's significance just became apparent to me now- "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day." - Basically, every day could be your last. Sounds like my car.

Leftover Crack – So You Wanna Be A Cop? Lyrics 22 years ago
pretty in punk, you make absolutely no sense. well, i lied, you make a small small small bit of sense, but no more. i'm not really sure where to start with your jumbled rambling, so, i guess i'd just rather not. but all i will say is that if you don't care about what happened here, then you are more heartless than you could ever accuse anyone of being. i'm not saying feel sorry for me, because i'm alive and so's my family. but these fuckers who you claim had a reason to do this didn't attack anybody of real importance in my country, they just went for numbers. bombing our country will not make us change anything for them, by the way, you fucking militant sypathetic. all it will do is cause us to annihilate them, and believe me, we will. i'm not selfish, you show me proof that america is guilty of these things, i'll do some thinking, but you know as much about world politics as i do or as anyone does, with the exception of those directly involed. i'm talking world leaders. you don't know shit, so don't offer justification for attacks that can only be described as obscene and unwarranted. they killed people who had nothing to do with anything america may have done to them or anyone they know, so fuck you, and don't act like england is some squalid little fucking slum in comparison with america either. furthermore, this "discussion is moving in circles as you keep saying the same things, causing me to do the same, so i'd appreciate it if you just let this drop at this response. i just can't believe that you think i'm trying to evoke pity from fuckers like you. i'm telling you why i'm mad. and i wasn't explaining the shooting of amadou diallo to you, i was arguing with the song which says that those cops felt good about killing that guy. if a song is going to have an anti-cop message, at least use claims that are somewhat true.
that's all i have to say to you.

Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 22 years ago
average, at least you're well-spoken. i agree with some of what you've said, but disagree with other things. one- i strongly believe that the media is shit. it'q schoolyard rumors and nothing more. two- i AGREE that european cops ape different and that was a point i was trying to make originally. i was defending the NYPD, not any european police, because i don't know any police forces in europe, however assume that they are much different after hearing stories from people. i should apologize for calling any of the english "limey". it was immature, but i assume it's as if you were to call me a yankee (which is highly inoffensive). hey, if you want us to get attacked again (as i interpret from my father and i projected as being busy this coming year) good for you, that's your right. i however think you're a cocksucker if you want that to hapPen, and that's my right. i stumbled on this song by accident, because there are a few songs by alkaline trio that i do like. of course they're allowed to express their opinions, i respect that. i also have a right to disagree and argue something. i didn't come here looking for responces, but it happEned, and i will in turn respond. i was looking at the leftover crack song that someone mentioned as i argued my point against this song.
oh, and yes, this song is actually about a cop, it's based on an american sterotype of cops as all being drunks who hate their lives. not everything is a symbol, and i'll be honest with you, thiS guy's no robert frost, and i'm fairly certain his artistic insight barely goes beyond two-dimensional.

regardless, i thought long and hard about what i think of the poliae and of the government and of the world, and you know what happened? i became a bitter teenager who spent the past couple of years in a scene founded on nothing but peter pan ideals, in which everyone eventually has to grow up and therefore become disillusioned.
in life there are going to be things i disagree with, of course. and i will voice my opinion. my original comment was actually just a response to other comments, not really based on the song, however, the lyrics are weak, as they don't look to be above a high school reading level when read without music. you want a band with lyrics that are symbolic and deep? check out grandaddy. this band is nothing new, they're no intellects, i don't need to know them to know that, all i have to do is read the lyrics, not because of WHAT is said, but because of HOW it's said. I mean, just for example, the fifth grade double entendre with the word "rattle" in the first verse. I bet they high fived when they saw that he used a literary device. Poor bastard should've become a math teacher.

Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 22 years ago
i'm not generalizing arabs. i'm saying we allow them all in this country and their people think we're so fucking terrible that they're gonna attack us. i don't live in any perfect world either, i live in a country that was attacked by fucking psychopaths and yes, osame bin laden's leadership was that of a cult leader, jerkoff. i live in a country that was attacked, people from my city killed, people who had nothing to do with anything my country has done overseas. so fuck that, they kill innocents, we kill innocents. no rules in war, girlie, i think you're the one living in a little bubble. violence creates violence, and we gotta play the game, america will be goddamned if we're gonna let that happen without taking some motherfuckers down from the other side. i don't like everything america does, but they keep me protected, and that's social darwinism. my heart goes out to those who suffer injustice in other places, but i'm doing ok, so i wouldn't want to live anywhere but here. my original point was that new york city cops are the best in the world, and i won't listen to anyone badmouth them as a whole. i know what i said, i thought about it, you don't need to correct me.

Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 22 years ago
i know what i'm saying, and it's them or me. it's terrible for anyone to die, but america will steamroll any other country or entity. and besides, you may think you know everything, but you don't. just because your hippie zines or slanted newspapers tell you something, doesn't mean the story doesn't go deeper. you may know how to read, but i don't think you know how to think. it's funny, cuz i guarantee that you listen to songs telling you how bad it is to believe the media. zines are media. the news is media. you're a hypocrite. while the story may be true, don't take it as dogma. there's not just two sides to every story, but several sides. you don't know shit about foreign affairs, and neither do i, and neither do 99% of the population except for the crumbs of truth that the media are handed, which are then chewed up and spit into your fucking mouth. the people who bombed this country were people like you, who were easily led by a force that was larger than themselves, by something to believe in. these people weren't men who lost family members or anything like that. this was a fucking cult. do you know how many goddamn arabs are in this country? more than in the fucking middle east. you cannot get in a cab or go to a deli in New York City without being asked "How are you today my friend?" by an Arab. So fuck you and fuck your bleeding heart. After Sept 11, I don't care how many died over there. You'd feel the same way if you lived here. Better yet, you'd feel the same way if a yuppie wiped his feet on a crass logo the way they wipe their feet on our fucking flag. Fuck you, you goddamn limey, and don't tell me I'm not thinking about what I'm saying, I've had nine months to watch them digging through the Trade Center remains and to hear my father tell me about how he found had to have a guy's family identify his severed head so he could have a proper funeral. I'm not saying there's things going on that I don't know about, cuz there are. But there's just as much going on in the world that you don't know about. And Israel has nothing to do with the Taliban launching an attack on us, even if they say it does. And is it possible that we gave money to Israel? Yes, in fact, very probable. Is it possible that they used the money in ways other than what they said it would be used for? Of course. But injecting children with HIV? Keep going with your conspiracy theories. Even if they did do that, America wouldn't knowingly fund it. And you have no leg to stand on. The British cleared the Indians from America (genocide) and have been oppressing my native land (Ireland) for God knows how long, so get off your goddamn high horse. Don't point fingers at my country and say we deserve that. Even if you didn't actually say those words, that's what you said. If the goddamn arabs take out a landmark in London, killing thousands of innocent. lets see if you're gonna be sensitive to their plight.

Leftover Crack – So You Wanna Be A Cop? Lyrics 22 years ago
strag- don't try to act like a victim. I used to hang out at ABC No Rio in NYC, which is where Leftover Crack and Choking Victim play, and I saw what goes on there, cops don't bother people, even for drinking in the street. There will come a time, strag, when you will wish you kept your juvenile, peter pan views to yourself, trust me.
Pretty in Punk- I don't give a fuck what happens to you, Limey. You're speaking to an audience of people, who as far as I know are from the US, at least that's where I'm from. More specifically, New York City. Police here are the ones I was talking about. The NYPD are not some British backwoods retards who got their badges at a flea market; the real cops of the NYPD (which are beat cops in bad areas, detectives, narcs, and cops whose lives are in danger every day) are a group of some of the toughest and most intelligent New Yorkers, for the most part. Of course there are cases of cops' actions being downright criminal, i.e. drunk driving homicides by cops, etc. But cops are human. Diallo (41 shots) was a tragedy. But you do not pull out a black object from your back pocket when four people have guns drawn on you. If Amadou Diallo was white, there would be an investigation into the incident, and the cops would be punished accordingly. That is a fact. The public is racist, not the cops or the media. A black man is shot by white police. Must be racial profiling. There was no reason to stop him, right? You don't know that the cops wouldn't have done the same had he been white, which I'm sure they would have, given that the scenario were EXACTLY the same except the color of his skin. You people are the ones who eat what the media feeds you. Nobody will ever truly know what happened except for Diallo and for the cops who were there, so there is no point in arguing that issue. From this point forward, I'm not gonna argue any of this with you, as you don't know my system, and I don't know your system. But I'd appreciate your generalizing of police being restricted to BRITISH police, as you know nothing of the NYC police, and for all I care, your goddamn country can sink, so long as the Irish go unharmed.

SkemoKid- I sent you a private message, because I didn't feel the need to publicize the things I had to say to you, because I actually meant what I was saying, I wasn't putting on a show. I see that you've responded to everyone who posted responded pulblicly. Hmm, maybe cuz you're just talking bullshit that means nothing unless you have an audience.

I'm not even going to respond to that, because BLAIR is not BUSH. I'm from NEW YORK, where two huge buildings were ambushed by psychos and killed thousands upon thousands of people. Don't even try to compare your police system with ours. My comment was made to AMERICAN citizens, because the song is about American Cops. End of story, I'm not arguing my view of police with somebody who's not even a citizen in my country.

Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 22 years ago
defect, my dad's a cop, and i'm currently waiting to enter the Police Academy of New York City, so i can relate. I don't know where you're from or where the singer of the band is from, but no cops anywhere are like the fuckin NYPD. Being a cop is not a guy "getting stuck in a shitty job" as you put it. I'd like to see this guy who wrote this song collar a 7 foot psychopath wanted for homicide in the toughest parts of one of the toughest cities in the world. Being a cop is not a job a person gets stuck in, it is a job a person has to go through several tests and tasks and training periods to be found fit to perform, for pay that is not fitting the work that cops do. are there asshole cops? of course there are, because they're human beings, but the good that police do far outweighs the bad. and the "bad" that you people deal with is getting yelled at for loitering outside the 7-11 in your small suburban towns or for doing 58 in a 50. fuck that, you people will never encounter really good cops, you know why? because your not murderers, rapists, or arsonists. those are the people who encounter the good cops, and when those good cops deal with the scum of the earth for long enough, they become bitter, because they're only human. newfoundgetupkid, i would be mad at your comment if i thought you weren't severely mentally retarded. you're probably a sexually frustrated, pubescent, acne-ridden lad who finally found music that speaks to him and covered his jansport with patches and pins. did you work 12 hours a day for over a month immediately after september 11th sifting through rubble downtown and at the garbage dump to find body parts to be identified by forensics so that families could bury their dead? cuz my father did. and so did probably half of the detectives and patrolmen in New York City. fuck them? fuck you, douchebag. And anyone who disagrees, I don't know what to tell you. There are assholes on the job, as I mentioned before, but there are assholes in any and every line of work. People seem to love to focus in on the asshole cops and say "Fuck the police, blah blah blah." I never hear "Fuck the Wall St. guys", well actually I do, but not as much. But you know what I've never ever heard? "Fuck firefighters" And I'm glad I never have, but why just cops? Cops are there to keep people like you safe from murder, robbery, rape, and so on and if they can't prevent it from happening to you, they'll make sure the guy that got you won't get someone else. and if you're gonna bring up "Oh, a guy could kill someone and be out of jail in 5 years, boo hoo" I'm not denying that, and neither will any cop, and that's why they get so bitter and disillusioned. That's the legal systems fault, and lawyers who defend a guy that they know murdered an elderly woman for example. Fuck lawyers, I'd rather hear people say that, cuz lawyers are the fucking lowest of the low. They're pieces of shit who don't care about justice, they look at cases as personal victories, not the big picture, i.e. the benefit of society at large. I can go on all night, but it's 1:15 am, and I have to be in work in less than 7 hours. By the way, I work for a company that does jobs all over the city, and I was recently at a job at 3 World Financial Center. The building was separated from what was the Trade Center (or as non-New Yorkers like to call it, "ground zero") only by West St. So when I looked out of the window on the east side of the 29th floor, I was looking directly into the hole, which i assure you all is fucking gigantic. Anyway, I think I've made my point.

Grandaddy is an amazing fucking band. The singer is brilliant. This song can be related to in several different ways, pretty much I guess all stemming from one intended meaning, which is obvious, I'm not gonna get into it. My favorite line is

Nas – One Mic Lyrics 22 years ago
I did respect Nas because his lyrics were a lot more intelligent, he had a better flow and an all around better feel to his music than most of the corporate shit that gets mass produced and sounds the same (such as ja-rule, dmx, all that shit) nas doesn't talk about "chillin in the club" and drinkin "cristal" as much as the other rappers, and for this reason, i consider nas more hip-hop than rap. and i guess i still respect his music, but i don't respect his opinions. he says "you know the block was ill as a youngster. Every night it was like a cop would get killed, body found in the dumpster." The block was "ill" which means good. Directly following this line, he mentions that at least one cop was killed in his neighborhood a day, meaning that the block was good, because cops were being killed. That is simple fact, he directly says that, and if you cannot take the literal meaning from a very straightforward sentence because you can't believe that Nas would say something so malicious, then you're pretty naive. I'm from the city, I've had bricks thrown through my wondows when I was a baby, people were killed around the corner from my house, and one of the most famous mob hits to happen in the last 20 years happened on my block. I know what crime is all about. I'm not some sheltered bitch who whines that Nas is too ghetto, cuz I can relate to that shit to a degree. Anyway, expression is expression, and my personal tastes in music are criticized all the time, and I accept the opinions of others. I realize that this is his version of honesty, and I hafta allow him that right. At the same time, I am afforded the right to publicly express my disdain for that opinion, as it goes against my beliefs and choice of lifestyle. And I, more than most people, can respect expression and art and all that, I live for that shit, so don't say that I didn't respect Nas for the right reasons, cuz I did until I read some of his lyrics that I couldn't quite catch while just listening. And what he says about women not aborting their pregnancies is propaganda. He says "we need more soldiers" That is propaganda. Ask anyone who has an I.Q. of more than 7, they'll agree. That is fact, also. Telling women not to abort so that they can fuel the race war-that's propaganda. You seem not to understand what I'm saying, and I thought I laid it out pretty clearly, but if you're gonna argue over the meaning of a song that's this straightforward, I guess you can't be expected to understand what I'm saying. By the way, where are you from? Cuz if you ain't from New York, then anything you said is of no value anyway, due to sheer ignorance.

Nas – One Mic Lyrics 22 years ago
No meaning beneath the surface, he comes right out and exemplifies some of the worst attributed characteristics to his "trade" and his race. "Hoodrats, don't abortion your womb, we need more warriors soon "- He looks at fetuses who are gonna be aborted without a second thought in the first place as "warriors"? What fucking war is being fought?! There is no war, and moving out of the projects ain't hard if you work a goddamn job. I know plenty of poor white trash who never had to live in the projects, I'm from the city. This is bullshit, rascist propaganda on his part, and God help the uninformed youth who read this lyrics and say "Oh man, I didn't know it was that bad, what a terrible life. Kill Whitey!" Absolutely ridiculous. And the line about how great it was when every day there was another dead cop found in the dumpster is truly disturbing, especially from the point of view of someone whose father has been a cop in NYC for the past 20 years and who will himself be a cop in NYC within the next few years. Unbelievable that anybody would have the balls to say such a thing, and even more unbelievable that somebody would read the lyrics and wish for cop-killings, but it happens. I actually really respected Nas until I read these lyrics. I feel that the problems between blacks and whites these days should amount to little more than differences between Irish and Italian or something of that nature, given the time and place. We're all American now, just different heritage. This shit has got to stop.
