I'm so glad that someone else appreciates the Dinosaur Jr.'s cover!!!
Although i like this song (and love the cure... more so Head on the Door than Kiss Me...), it is ruined for me a bit, because every time i hear it i am reminded of every school dance/sweet 16/party where, when this song played, inevitably some girl who's now ex-boyfriend had claimed this to be their "song" (they obviously ignored the part about finding themselves "alone alone alone"!!!!)would run off crying and setting off a dramatic scene... did this bother me because it... meant I now had to console a friend? interrupted my dancing? made me miss the song? NO!!! I wanted a reason (read: boyfriend) to have a dramatic scene of my very own!!!!
ps- loved the video, made 120 Minutes worth staying up for. |

never liked tool much (due to the fans like the ones described by howie2 and the fact that I considered both the band and Maynard himself as pretentious and without humor) until I heard this song... my German is really rusty, but someone played this song for me promising me that I would change my opinions of Tool. When I asked "did he just say bake at 200 for 15 minutes, without eggs?!?" I realized that my knee-jerk dislike of Tool was the flip-side of the idiots who first liked this song because "dude, it's like, so evil and hardcore... Tool ROXX!!" I'm still not what I would consider a huge fan, but Maynard made his point with me... |

hey "...hyena" you hit the nail on the head with your analogy... it drives me nuts when people ask me who my fave band is and I am met with the blank stare until I begrudgingly say "they did that song at the end of Fight Club." On one hand, I love that more people were exposed to their music, but on the other, I hate that they are getting the casual fan (like Beck got with "Loser", Nirvana got with "Teen Spirit", and the Cure got with "Friday I'm in Love") who doesn't look into the back catalogues. Snobbish, yes, but it kills me that this band never got the recognition it deserved for being so unique and groundbreaking. I think the Pixies can be compared to the Velvet Underground, in that they may not be the most popular bands (mainstream music-wise) but they served to influence so many bands after them. |

This song always makes me so sad... thinking about this alien who is so excited for his big heroic journey to a "friendly star" and who winds up dead in a crate. I always find the alien references in Pixies/Frank Black songs to be very interesting, just one of the 10 million reasons why the Pixies are the best EVER!!! |

this song really sums up the feelings that occur after you take a friendship to "the next level" when you just should have just kept it platonic... the uncomfortable interaction, the "obligations to... crippled conversations," the betrayal of trust... the closer you were before, the more it hurts after.
moral of the story: think twice about fucking a good friend... you may wind up losing them. |
