Sugarland – Already Gone Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree about the "Pictures, dishes and socks / It's our whole life down to one box" line. It's so simple, sad and true. I don't think I'd come back to this song as often if not for that verse. The rest of the song is good, but that's one of the best lyrics I've heard in quite a while.

Coheed and Cambria – Crossing the Frame Lyrics 16 years ago
"It's about Claudio/Writer discovering Newo/Ericka in bed with someone else.

And that's a fact."

Yep. This is basically Claudio lamenting Newo's unfaithfulness -- although, to be fair to her, it sounds like he never said goodbye or told her why he was leaving. He seems to think that she would've been true to him if he'd been able to stay at home, and is bitter that she wasn't. And with the Newo/Erica Court parallels, the situation is obviously significant to the Writer (and probably a manifestation of his mistrust of women).

It's even more obvious when you listen to "Feathers" from Good Apollo Vol. 2 -- that's more of an "I know what you did, just give it up" version of this song.

Coheed and Cambria – Elf Tower, New Mexico Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, in retrospect my last post was way unduly critical. There are just a few places where what I hear differs significantly from what's posted here. Here's my best guess of the lyrics based on what I hear, asterisks next to the parts that I'm really not sure about....I guess it's sort of a combination of these and I_Want_You_Dead's lyrics.

Elf Power, New Mexico
Elf Power, New Mexico.

Thank god you're still angry at me.
Then I've got a better chance of seeing you dead and buried.
Thank you for this one last big mistake.
It's your turn, come shoot for it.
If you win, well, you can lead the way, yeah.

Midday subway into New Jersey.**
Did you think maybe I was doing quite well without you in the frame?

Stale, killed in defense,
I can't believe I told you after.
I'm giving you up, go on, find someone new.
'Til then pretend you've touched me for your last (haha).**
I'm giving you up, go on, find someone new.

Dear Nikki, what, what if I could have found a better half here in you?
Oh Nikki, here.
Elf Power, New Mexico
Elf Tower, New Mexico.

Stay here in our last standing hourglass circumstance
Devoted, here, in the midst of the weary eyes.
Lost and buried, here, in your big surprise, again.
Will your fingers find my back?
Familiar fit in the questions that I had to ask.
Did you think maybe I was doing quite well without you in the frame?

Stale, killed in defense.
I can't believe I told you after.
I'm giving you up, go on, find someone new.
'Til then pretend you've touched me for your last (haha)
I'm giving you up, go on, find someone new.

Dear Nikki, what, what if I could have found a better half here in you?
Oh, Nikki, here.
Elf Power, New Mexico.

I'll give my words in one lesson.
Dear god, before I heard this was your intention,
Before I could have figured out, over and over.
See then there's Coheed, and then Cambria
In innocent merger, absence makes the fonder.

Thank god they recovered your body in New Mexico
Three days it spoiled, oh,
I miss you in every way, you could've been dear, wish you were here
Still in the frame.

Coheed and Cambria – Elf Tower, New Mexico Lyrics 16 years ago
Hah, what happened since the last time I commented? These are so wrong. No one knows what the "full" correct version of the lyrics are, but a lot of these are way off..

As for the ".... into New Jersey" line, I have always heard, "Midday subway into New Jersey." I'm fully willing to admit that that might be way off, though.

And it seems obvious to me that it's, "Will your fingers find my back? / Familiar fit in the questions that I had to ask...", alluding back to "'Til then pretend / You've touched me for your last, haha."

Fall Out Boy – Thnks fr th Mmrs Lyrics 17 years ago
You know, I often feel like Fall Out Boy's lyrics are either pedestrian or nonsensical (when they're not borrowing from something else), but every now and then they stumble onto something great. I didn't catch the "In hotel rooms, collecting Page 6 lovers" line the first few times through, but it's quite clever. Page 6 is, of course, the gossip column in the New York Post. So yeah, I guess it's the pop culture references that get me.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 17 years ago
This is probably the msot beautiful song I've ever heard, on one of my favorite albums. What a stunning centerpiece for Oh, Inverted World.

I agree that the song is primarily about waking up one day to find that you're not where you had planned, and lamenting the loss of the one person who could have made things turn out differently -- looking in at her life and comparing it to yours. But the singer has realized that eventually you'll notice the grit under the surface, and he wishes (perhaps halfheartedly) the one he loves luck when she inevitably notices it, too. But if he were with her, it would be more bearable. What I think is striking about it is the tone: what I see as an attempt to be casual and perhaps even apathetic while truly being incredibly invested and desperate. I think that it tries to be more jaded than it is, as though there's innocence not yet completely lost.

Beyoncé – Irreplaceable Lyrics 17 years ago
SE7ENfreak: Bingo.

This is her trying to convince herself that she's over him when it's obviously not the case. The vocals go against the lyrics in that sense. "You have no idea what you're missing; I'll have you replaced anytime I want." It's defensive - she's not as sure of that as she puts on in the song, and at the time, she's really hurt. And that is what makes this a stellar song.

So I always that the "I'll be your number one with a bullet" lyric was completely at random, but when channel surfing the other day I happened onto a movie called Number One with a Bullet. I didn't watch said movie, but it reminded me of this song and I wondered what about the movie might relate to the lyrics. Fall Out Boy is sort of my (very) guilty pleasure because I am amused by their melodrama and constant movie references.

The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics 19 years ago
I liked the tentative title ("A Call to Apathy" better... just feel it necessary to express that. Great song, though.

Yeah, basically I agree..... it seems to be about a person who freaks out about commitment (specifically marriage) and leaves because he thinks he's meant to be alone. Much less cryptic than most Shins lyrics.

The Smiths – Paint a Vulgar Picture Lyrics 20 years ago
I really love this song. I agree that it does a good job of showing the ups and downs of the music business.... and how it's so hard to refuse it. "You could have said no, if you wanted to / You could have walked away, couldn't you?" Kind of a price-of-fame song. The "true love" at the end is himself, given the "On their hands, at last, a dead star.... / But they can never taint you in my eyes / They can never touch you now."

I love the title of this song, and the line:
"And if it fails to recoup, well maybe:
'You just haven't erned it yet, baby.'"

The Wrens – Everyone Choose Sides Lyrics 20 years ago
"Greener grasses fade from where you wind up."

Favorite Wrens lyric. Actually, probably one of my favorite lyrics ever, at least thinking about it in the context of the song. Also, of course, "I've walked away from more than you imagine / and I sleep just fine".... this song and "This Boy is Exhausted" do such an awesome job of telling about their trials and tribulations as a band.

Oh, oh! I forgot to comment on this.... but yeah, what's up with what sounds like a tv sermon in the background at the end of this song? "...The stone was rolled away, and by the way, by the way, God did not have to roll that stone away for Jesus to come out" It's kinda weird...I wonder why they put that in there, or what it means in the context of the song. Ideas?

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is amazing... definitely my favorite NMH song. The lyrics are abstract but so very beautiful.... especially the one part in the middle:

"And in my dreams you're alive and you're crying
As your mouth moves in mind, soft and sweet
Rings of flowers round your eyes
And I'll love you for the rest of your life..."

I also love the "God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life" line, although I'm not really sure why. Anyway, I think trying to come up with a clear interpretation of this song is kind of dangerous because, at best, Neutral Milk Hotel songs seem to be very loosely inspired on coherent concepts (e.g. Anne Frank in Holland, 1945). A lot of it is just really really abstract.

By the way, nichie, I can see the incest thing too.

The Shins – Saint Simon Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is lovely. Musically it's one of the most complex and interesting Shins songs. Lyrically... I find them sort of hard to figure out. The most that I ever seem to get is an impression. The verses seem to be about finding it sort of cheap (or just not possible at all) to use other people's words and opinons to describe what you're feeling. I'm not really sure about the "Mercy's eyes are blue...." part, although it's gorgeous.

I love this song.... ahhh, so much. Most of Team Boo is suitably incredible, really. They make me happy. Since they so obviously are. If you get the chance to see them live, you should.

The Postal Service – Clark Gable Lyrics 20 years ago
This song and "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" are my favorite songs on Give Up lyrically. Of course, the great thing about The Postal Service is that the instances where the lyrics are somewhat less-than-stellar are still completely forgivable because the music is just that awesome.

Anyway, I think that this song is about not being able to let go, and being disillusioned with love in general. I love the lines "Do you ever get the fear / That your perfect verse is just a lie you tell yourself just to get by." Because who doesn't get that fear sometimes?

Coheed and Cambria – Three Evils (Embodied in Love and Shadow) Lyrics 20 years ago
My interpretation of this song is something along these lines...

After Coheed and Cambria die, Claudio goes into hiding probably encounters some not-nice things and people. For example, this part:

"slowly discarded were the remains of his lonely youth
among the alley where the dwellers scare to notice
picture a young boy in pieces and streets with leveled malfunctions
no name to be called redeemer "

...makes me think that because Claudio's character is sort of being set up to be a messiah-type figure. I think this song's sort of a narrative about that.... at first it's kind of like he's sworn off his old life ("Think of all the times you once had / Write them in a letter that says goodbye") and loses hope and is devastated, suicidal even ("Pull the trigger and the nightmare stops", but then is later some outside force decides "We'll fix him, restore him / With the love is no other / Think of all the times you once had, / Write them in a letter that says reborn" to set things straight. I'm kinda getting the reluctant hero being called back to his duty kind of vibe from this song. This interpretation fits pretty well with the next song, The Crowing, in terms of the "Dear Ambellina, the Prise wishes you, to watch over me / Dear Ambellina, the Prise wishes all to watch over me" bit.

That's my guess anyway.

Taking Back Sunday – You're So Last Summer Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree that this is a great song, but come on, people, that line that everybody loves isn't SWEET, it's pathetic. And that's the point, I think. "The truth is you could slit my throat and with my one last gasping breath I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt." ...It really isn't sweet, it makes me feel sorry for the guy. I agree with whoever said it was about a relationship where the guy started thinking that everything that he did was wrong, and even if she killed him, he would be in the wrong because he was bleeding on her. It's sort of mocking, actually. It's meant to say that he hates that she thinks he's nothing when all he really wants is to know that she ever cared about him at all. It's more like a "screw you" song than one that actually attempts to get sympathy, or at least that's how it seems to me.

John Mayer – My Stupid Mouth Lyrics 21 years ago
"I'm never speaking up again,
It only hurts me.
I'd rather be a mystery
Than she desert me."

This is my favorite segment of this song. Just the idea that he always says the wrong thing, so now he'd really rather just end it before he can mess up again. He would rather her remember him as a mystery and never know what might have been than have to live with the fact that he messed things up between them.

And yes, everyone can relate to this song. Certainly anyone who's had an awkward date or said the wrong thing.

Weezer – Across The Sea Lyrics 21 years ago
Across the Sea! Pinkerton is by FAR the best Weezer album. Actually in a moment of weakness the other week I broke down and bought Maladroit... and gave it away after hearing it once. Anyway, this song. Yeah, I think the meaning about the letter from the Japanese fan is perfectly correct (that whole motif through Pinkerton is really cool). But more than that, it's about the consequences of fame-- "So you send me your love / From all around the world / As if I could live off words and dreams and a million screams / Oh how I need a hand in mine to feel" (that part is beautifully sung, by the way)... is saying that you can have millions of people admire you from afar, but it isn't the same as having one person's love who could actually reach you.

Third Eye Blind – Motorcycle Drive By Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, so I've recently rediscovered this CD and it's so so cool how powerful all the lyrics are, but this song takes the cake. Definitely it's about a relationship that didn't work out, but I love the way it's done. It's about trying to get over it, sort of. The most meaningful part to me is "Where's the soul I want to know / New York City is evil / The surface is everything but I could never do that / Someone would see through that." It totally represents those times in your life when you've got the world at your feet but at the same time you're afraid to take the chance.

The Juliana Theory – If I Told You This Was Killing Me, Would You Stop? Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't really think this is a relationship song, really. My personal interpretation is that it's about himself or possibly to a friend. It's about when you know you've said something wrong but you can't stop and you just keep talking digging yourself deeper... that's how I see it, anyway. And sort of when you try really hard to apologize for something you've said. If it's about himself then the "if I told you this was killing me, would you stop?" thing makes much more sense.
BTW, I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but part of what makes it not a relationship song to me is "Watch your mouth / Hold your tongue boy"... so it wouldn't seem to be about a girl, would it?

The Phantom Of The Opera – Beyond The Lake (scene 9) Lyrics 21 years ago
Ahhh! The most amazing thing EVER to see live... I love this musical. This is my favorite part, too, the reprises of everything at the end always get to me. I especially love the part where Christine has to choose between Raoul's life or staying with the Phantom... where they're all singing different melodies at the same time. And the end, it's so heartbreaking.... "You alone can make my song take flight / It's over now, the music of the night..." SO beautiful... every time I hear a song from it I get this intense urge to go see it again.

I don't know why the title is You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania.... but this is a good song. I like the "Oh no, it must be something I said / Love is another word for regret" thing... pretty depressing, but it definitely makes you think. I think it's about a breakup, but then uncertainty afterwards. He definitely misses her... I like the end where he says "Wait for me like I've waited for you." The interesting thing is that every time I listen to this cd a different song jumps out at me... I didn't really like this song at first, but it's really good.

Incubus – I Miss You Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is great. It's just such a sweet and simple love song. It's easy to explain... it's about a guy who has to be away from his girlfriend (or she has to be away from him) and he misses her a lot. Or maybe it's a post-breakup song. It could go either way, depending on how your interpret it. It has a current-relationship feel to it though, I think. They didn't play this when I saw them in concert in June. Sadness. :(

Hmm... have to disagree with the comment that Claudio sounds like the lead singer of NFG... totally disagree in fact. I don't mind NFG, especially old stuff, but Jordan's voice is NOTHING like Claudio's. I don't particularly like Jordan's voice and he hasn't got a lot of range. Claudio has incredible range and waaaaaaay more emotion in his voice.

Great song... this is definitely my favorite of theirs, but I think that might be because most of the other ones I've heard don't have great recording quality. It'd be nice to see them live, I'm sure it would do them better justice. I really like Claudio's voice. Amazing vocal range.

So... amidst all the arguing about the classification of Coheed and Cambria, no one's really discussed what the song is about. Any ideas? I've read that their songs are based on sci-fi novels, but this one doesn't really seem to be.

Dave Matthews Band – Ants Marching Lyrics 22 years ago
Again, a great Dave Matthews Band song... awesome message.... how people go through routine and get so used to it that they forget to take chances, and before they know if they've wasted their whole lives waiting ("Take these chances / Place them in a box until a quieter time / lights down, you up and die"). I like the verse about driving along the highway, the "people in every direction / no words exchanged / no time to exchange".... it's sad that people don't care enough to acknowledge others, or really know what to say. The ant analogy is good, too. My favorite part of the song is where it gets faster and does the "Candyman tempting the thoughts of a sweet tooth... etc" part. I like to rewind it and listen to that part again.

Thrice – In Years To Come Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a really good love song. I like the lyrics a lot..... total devotion. It's saying that you'll sacrifice all of yourself so that the one you love will never feel pain. But then it gets deeper than that... maybe a little twisted even. It's like pain is the only thing comparable to what you feel for them, so you'd be willing to take a great deal of it just to show them how much you care. The last verse is amazing... "I want to write the perfect song / And play it just for you / While you are tangled up in sleep".... what beautiful imagery. Great song.

Dashboard Confessional – Screaming Infidelities Lyrics 22 years ago
.......

I shall choose not to contribute to the whole emo/not emo, MTV and mainstream radio, etc debates. Those are secondary, really, as it is all about the music anyway.

Wow. I don't get it, I really really don't. What's the big deal about this song, and Dashboard in general? It's okay the first few times, good even... but after about the third time you hear it you start to wonder, or I did. The guy's voice is quite enchanting, that I will give you. But this whole "lyrical genius" thing is totally beyond me. The lyrics AREN'T THAT GOOD! That goes for any Dashboard song I've heard, and I've heard a lot of them. I like Hands Down, but it's not lyrical genus either. I don't find the lyrics that *deep* at all. Depth is not constituted by stuff like "As for me, I wish that I was anywhere / with anyone, making out" and "Your hair, it's everywhere / screaming infidelities and taking its wear". It's your run-of-the-mill "woe as me, she cheated on me and now I'm lonely" song. If it's any deeper than that, someone show me what I'm missing. What's with people who're like "this is my favorite song, this is my LIFE".... of COURSE it is, everyone can relate to it, but that doesn't mean it's brilliant. I haven't seen anything remotely brilliant in the DC songs I've listened to. Another problem is that DC is a little too mellow for me. Emotional music should have some.... oomph, I guess... it shouldn't be all sappy slow songs. There are other emotions besides love, longing and loneliness and what have you.

And no, I'm not one of those "emo" haters (the term used loosely of course, as it seems to be controversial). A lot of post emo-ish stuff (kinda like this) is good. Saves the Day is one of my favorite bands. I just don't see the big deal with Dashboard Confessional.

Staind – Epiphany Lyrics 22 years ago
I think....
It's a little of both. Depression (and probably drug use) AND a little of a love song, but it's about how he's going through something and the one who loves him is trying to reach him but can't... "Your words to me a whisper / Your face is so unclear / I try to pay attention / Your words just diappear". I definitely get the depression thing out of it.... he's miserable and he wants to hide behind the one trying to help him ("dig myself a little hole / Inside your precious heart") but at the same time can't stop himself from pushing them away ("who cries out for attention / though I always try to hide"). Basically, he needs that person there, but at the same time it's not enough to get him out of whatever he's going through. Or maybe it has nothing to do with love in the romantic way at all, but it's definitely someone depressed talking to the people who are trying to help him.

New Found Glory – My Friends Over You Lyrics 22 years ago
Oh my GOD.... what is wrong with you people? Sorry, but if I hear anymore about this whole "sell out" debate I'm going to puke. Why can't it just be about the music? I don't consider a band to have "sold out" unless they drastically change their music for the purposes of mass appeal. And yes, that always sucks.... but.... if a band sells out and you don't like it, then just don't listen to them anymore. You've always got their old stuff to love. If you still like their post "sell out" material, then great. What's with caring so much what everyone else thinks? Even if there are people who've only heard one or two songs and are like "OMG, NFG RULZ!", how does it affect you? YOU know that you liked them before, that their new music isn't as good, etc. And if they stay the same, you'll still like them after the whole pop thing fades.

That said... I have some other comments.
-I agree that NFG and Blink 182 are pretty similar in their progressions. I definitely like NFG better though, both musically and lyrically I find them having more to offer than Blink. And Blink sort of sucks live (sorry), but I wouldn't know about NFG.
-TOTAL AGREEMENT about Jordan's voice, whoever had the comment about the lack of emotion. It's just sort of automatic and assembly-line compared singers from other bands (Saves the Day, Dashboard Confessional, Starting Line, etc).

Anyway, this song.... it's not bad, it's REALLY catchy (maybe too much so), but it's nothing spectacular. Meaning wise, I think it's about a guy who thought he'd do ANYTHING to have the girl he liked, but then when it happened it wasn't what he'd imagined it to be... and he found that he'd actually rather just hang out with his friends than spend time with her, so he ends it.

The Get Up Kids – I'll Catch You Lyrics 22 years ago
Oh... 'nother commment. I don't see it as a particularly sad song. Not even about a really messed-up relationship. I think the "wouldn't trade anything, you're still my everything" lyric is saying that they've had to go through so much in the relationship, and yet he loves her so much he'd do it all over again. I'm still going with the long-distance thing, and that would make sense with that interpretation.

I don't understand how she went from horrible stuff like Get This Party Started to songs like this and Don't Let Me Get Me that are actually bearable.... Baffling, really. It's a good change though, I guess. More rock-ish.

Anyway... FYI, I think "I Swear" by All4One is a John Michael Montgomery (country singer) cover... he did it first. I don't see THAT much of a resemblance to this song, though.

I love this song... it's so simple and relaxing. It kidna gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. I agree with what everyone else has said. The lyrics "Your arms in mine, anytime / I wouldn't trade anything / You're still my everything" make the song.

Question though.... what's with the "that I should stare at receivers to receive her isn't fair"? Long distance relationship?

New Found Glory – Hit Or Miss Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree about the best friend, too. Yeah, definitely... he realized once she wasn't single anymore that he liked her as more than friends, and is wondering if it's too late. He tries to make himself feel better by saying things like "Maybe it's for the best / Maybe it's not for anything at all" and "No more long rides home / No more of your station / I didn't like it anyway". But at the same time he reminisces about all the great times they have and wonders how he couldn't have seen it before. The end is sort of confusing, though.... "It's simple to you, so simple to lie / How many times I've tried / Blatant mistakes of your design"... any thoughts on that?
