Jeff Buckley – Lilac Wine Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song. I think it's about suicide. Lilac leaves are poisonous, and he makes a wine of it and drinks it to die and join his lover, who has already died. (Think Romeo and Juliet). But then those last lines.."I feel unready for my love". ..haunting and so moving.

hmm..interesting idea - abortion, but then I don't understand all the "you looked her in the eye" and "I watched her cry". Sounds like they are talking about an adult, not a fetus. and why the "I dont know anyone like me". The alienation seems more apropos for a murder. That's kinda my thinking, although I know that that's way out there, too. hmm...

Barenaked Ladies – Straw Hat And Old Dirty Hank Lyrics 21 years ago
That makes sense. I do tend to think this song is about a crazy fan who becomes obsessed and finally murders the celebrity singer he is stalking. hmm.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 21 years ago
I am with BobC. This song is about being gay and trying to deal with people's criticism and judgement and trying to meet someone who can love you. But of course everyone can relate. That's why the Smiths are so great - their songs, while talking specifically about the gay experience a lot of times, can apply to everyone's experience.

Counting Crows – Raining In Baltimore Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with pretty much everyone.

My take: He has moved from LA (where its sunny) across the country (3,500 miles) to a smalltown outside of Baltimore (50 miles east--where its rainy). His ex is still in LA and he misses her. People pass him on the trains, involved in their own lives, and he is outside of them - alone. I like the idea someone said that she doesnt want him back; they've broken up. He wants to call her, but he can't call her because she doesnt want him anymore. He thinks about buying a car just for something to do, to fill him up temporarily and make him feel better. Or to drive back to her? I'm with phaty4 that these are real needs. I can see him walking down the street. Passing a phone booth and thinking of calling her. Wishing he was in the big city. Wishing he had her back. and finally coming back to the mundane thought that he should get a raincoat.

What do you think the line "I think it's time to put the top down" mean? I assume he's referring to the circus big top? I guess it depends on what you think the circus is, huh? Maybe that its time he move on..

Sigh. Love this song.

The Chicks – Top Of The World Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with Champ Dream, except I thought the dead man was looking back and talking to his daughter that he disappointed. He wished she could have been proud (of her dad) and she is the songbird that he crushed somehow..through neglect? Although I supposed I could believe the wife interpretation as well. hmm.

either way, haunting song.
