I'm not exactly sure, but I think he's advising that we brush our teeth.

Grateful Dead – Uncle John's Band Lyrics 21 years ago
My personal opinion about this song is as a kind of protest about the Vietnam war (which was, unless I am very much mistaken, well underway at the time of this song's writing). The Dead's manager at this time was named John, and his nickname was 'Uncle John', so Uncle John's Band probably means the Dead themselves.

The giveaway verse is the one that begins, "Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like? Their walls are built of cannonballs, their motto is don't tread on me." This is a reasonably obvious reference to the USA. The Dead are playing by the riverside, preaching peace ("got some things to talk about") as the tides of war threaten to envelop them.

They talk of the transience of life, and how trivial and pointless hate is given a man's short time on this earth ... "Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait."

Uncle John's children are probably the soldiers sent to Vietnam, and the Dead want them to be taken home. As for the rest of the lyrics, they're completely beyond me.

Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with the Nordic idea; most of the evidence of the song seems to fit. However, I think Zep were also having a bit of fun with their new American audience; they started, as we all know, in Britain, and the wave of post-Beatles bands in America may here be termed 'an invasion'.

In effect, I think it's comparing a historical event to what was transpiring at the time of the song's writing.

Just to add to that, this song also reminds me of 'The Grapes of Wrath', by John Steinbeck.

Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics 21 years ago
Truth be told, I think this song is overanalyzed. It's just a very dedicated love song, with some nice language techniques to describe his devotion. I don't think there's much 'hidden meaning' here.

The song in itself, nevertheless, is brilliant, I concur wholeheartedly. Just as a matter of interest, the video was not supposed to be filmed as it was raining; the forecast was for a sunny day ... a yellow day. When they arrived on set, they'd already gotten everything ready, so Martin decided that they'd do it in the rain.

Don't look too deep! :D

Led Zeppelin – Custard Pie Lyrics 21 years ago
Very clear, in my opinion. Cunnilingus. First time I heard this song I was laughing through most of it.

A few puns are used, as well ... "see me comin'."

Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy Lyrics 21 years ago
This song strikes me as a little cynical ... a love song talking about the corruption of man by woman. There are some metaphorical references to sexual intercourse ... "the seeds of love I'll sow" ... but the narrator also seems to be condemning his woman at the same time, for being a "child of Satan", or even Satan himself.

Incidentally, the line about letting the "music be your master" is one of the lines that spurred rumours that Zep were trying to intertwine Satanic propaganda with their music. All crap, in my opinion, but ...

Led Zeppelin – All My Love Lyrics 21 years ago
I personally think that this song is, in part, an answer, or perhaps the conclusion, to 'Kashmir', and a way for the band to begin to say goodbye. I think that they knew at this point that things were winding down and their time was coming to an end. "All our love to the fans ... but is this to end, or just begin? Maybe we'll leave a legacy that will last longer than we think ... "

The reason I link it to 'Kashmir' is the fantastic (as in, pertaining to fantasy) lyrics, and the reference to a banquet.

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with the previous sentiment. I think this has nothing to do with LotR, though many Led Zeppelin songs do. This is, in fact, a very sad song. It does sound optimistic at first; OK, I've just been dumped by my bitch of a girlfriend ("a woman unkind"), I'm smoking and drinking myself to death ... wait on, maybe I'll start anew!

The media has a tendency to idealise California, and particularly the Californian girl. Take the Beach Boys' song, for example. Quite simply, he thinks that there is the woman for him, this perfect woman that he's been seeking all his life, so off he goes.

The poor bastard is dreaming. The woman he seeks ... a girl "with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair", has "never, never been born." THAT'S the crucial line in the song. It's just a roundabout way of saying that she doesn't exist ... a sexist statement, maybe, but there it is.

But he'll go on looking, spurred on by all of these false hopes and dreams he's built around (and under) himself, and is telling himself that in the end he'll find the woman of his dreams. He won't. But he's so caught up in his own optimism that he can't see it ... and he won't accept it when people try to tell him that "they're all the same." It's actually a highly cynical song, if you look at the lyrics in a certain way.

Jordan plays back! Swoosh! And that's the game! Nothing further, your Honour.

That's my point ... I see it as a criticism of God's actions.

The Verve – Weeping Willow Lyrics 21 years ago
The lyrics to this songs are particularly haunting to me. Looking carefully at them, I have an idea as to what it may be about; but it's a long shot.

The opening verse, I think, refers to realisation that a relationship is not working out ... "Morning breaks." The two drift apart, "hiding their eyes," with their "love aching" ... they still have feelings for one another, but there are difficulties. Perhaps these are of a sexual nature ... the hours of six to ten are mentioned.

The relationship dissolves, and each party is left feeling forlorn and empty. One of them cries out for the other to come back, hoping that the other has similar sentiments to his or her own. It gets to the point where both are contemplating suicide ... "the world don't stop ...you know it has to end" ... one with a pill under his/her pillow, the other with a gun.

This song reminds me to a degree of the lament of Job, who as most Jews or Christians will know, was deprived of all that the Lord had given to him in order to test his faith when Satan challenged him. Job ultimately succumbs to the temptation to question God (though he is forgiven and all his possessions are reinstated) ... perhaps that is the perspective from which this song comes?
