it seems like a reflection of his position toward a person with whom he is in love. i get the sense that he is deeply committed to this person, regardless of reciprocity. together they started a love, and that what is initiated his being chained to the person with love and loyalty. but, there is no mention of a semblance of receiving the same love and loyalty. it seems like a one sided thing, giving but not receiving. it's a sad situation, but i know very well that it's a reality for many. |

sooo, maybe i'm projecting... but here goes.
i think this song is about him being aware of the inevitable demise of a relationship he is in, where he is not too interested and the other person is vested so much more wholly than he. he sees this person is wasting time on him since he's pretty ambivalent, but he can't help but remain in this. he knows in time, this dream will be awoken from to realize it was a nightmare. he'll miss what they have, and he'll cry when all the drama of this love affair is over. he'll be sad when the other person finally walks away, but he can't seem to stop himself from doing it all again in the meantime. |

exactly! also, small = insignificant, meaningless, easily overlooked. all the things this unrequited love or whatever messed up relationship to this person has made her feel about herself. i also think that when she refers to herself in the 3rd person, that she feels exterior to herself. that perhaps maybe this isn't like her. so perhaps in other circumstances unrelated to this lover she doesn't behave/feel this way, which is why she thinks this situation is "when she's [i'm] small". just an idea... |

yes, i think you got it exactly right. at least that's how see it. there is an intensity and desperation in her voice that feels she just wants out of her misery. i think the mouth to feed piece to it has to do with survival. one must feed themselves in a few different ways to survive in life, but i feel like she questions whether she still has the survival instinct in her to keep going when she says "am i in too deep". |

i think song is incredibly sexy. ironically, it describes a person who is aware of the damaging dynamics of a relationship with this person who is Dangerous. the speaker knows very well that this is not a good thing for him, but he cannot help himself to want more and more... entirely at his expense.
it is certainly a sucky situation, but i love this song for it's ability to describe that crazy love/addiction to someone that leads a person to make bad choices for themselves, while draped in incredibly hot sounds and tone. so often, it's that risky arousal that drives us to this level of passionate self-desctruction. |

it may be my own trite perception of this song, but i believe this song is about inching closer and closer to hopelessness. that is, he is on the verge of losing all hope (and subsequently, care about anything), but he's not quite that far gone. this view of this life is not dark yet, but it's getting there. beautiful way to describe such a terribly sad state. |

i completely agree with you. i'll go so far as to say that the allusions to finding or feeling "it" may even be unrequited. that is, he is so pessimistic that i don't think it even matters if he really finds or feels it because he knows with certainty that it's not going to happen. as for the "you'll go to hell..." part, i think it might be a stretch, but i feel like he is telling himself that he will put himself through hell for thinking things other than these big ideas not happening. perhaps there is a shred of him that still wants to believe that it could happen, and so he is warning himself that thinking that way will be hellish in the end. |

many people have already said this, but i feel compelled to add my 2¢.
nude is not about sex. it's about being bare and vulnerable to others' perception. it's not naked 'cause that's an alone thing. nude is when you are being viewed.
i think it's about a double consciousness. he is nude to himself. he is giving up the vail he's been hiding behind. he may think he's innocent by painting himself white, but he is not. instead, he is really speaking honestly to himself. no, whatever his big ideas are, they are NOT going to happen. whatever he wants to find or feel, are NOT going to go anywhere. he will just drive himself crazy (off the rails) pining for them because there will always be something missing. hope and dreams may beckon him, but he needs to just realize that they will put him in a vicious circle so he needs to not succumb to those things. he ends by warning that he will put himself through hell (go to hell) if he allows his mind to hold onto those thoughts that keep him shrouded in pointless hopes and dreams. |

i've always loved this song, but it seems that out of no where, i seem to have gotten a different notion of what this song may be saying. previously, i concured with the ideas of it being somewhat about unrequited love, but something seemed askew...
well, i think it's not really that. i think it's more trying to explain to a person the speaker loves and values (maybe a partner, maybe a best friend, maybe both in one), that regardless of how badly they see things around them and view themselves, that the speaker cannot help but continue to view the person with loving eyes. people make mistakes, bad choices, say and do terrible things, but when you really love and know someone for who they are, you cannot help but feel like "my eyes can't look at you any other way." the person may beat themselves up about these things, but the speaker continues to be the champion and cheerleader for that person, unconditionally.

i love this song so much. her voice conveys so much emotion, which is perfect because of what she's singing about in this song. i agree with a lot of what's already been said about this song. i think it's about a woman realizing she has put in much too much into an emotional relationship with another person who seems to have a pattern of taking from her, but is inconsistent with what he gives her. she finally sees it for what it is, and vows to not let it happen again...as hard it is to come to terms with that. geez, can i ever relate!!! fml. :( |

it's been said, but to me it's one of the most lovely sounding and emotionally conveyed songs about unrequited love. i love that in the lyrics there is the self-awareness that really it could lead no where. the risktaking involved in this sort of love is paralyzing. i can definitely relate to it. |

i think this is a song that is more about a person who doesn't understand how another person could so easily fall in love with him. he is skeptical as much as he is in awe of it. i feel like he's looking at their position in this relationship of sorts (whether it's the intimacy of them waking up together or the seemingly routine comfort of her morning shower) from a position of hollowness. it seems he wants to feel the same things she seems to be feeling and showing, but he remains cold and empty in his heartm, and that it's largely because he's placed an elevation to what it means to love someone that he doubts she has truly arrived at with him. he's stressing to scrutinize every single thing about whether this real or not, leaving no stone unturned, but in the end i believe his cynicism persists... and he continues to keep his distance and sees her as a stranger. |

yeah, one of the saddest and most real songs around. for me, it catapults me into a time well after the initial heartbreak where somehow you access the same pain but from a position of distance. the way the speaker describes being under no illusion resonates with solace, but unrequited disappointment. it doesn't feel like there is actual contact between the speaker and his person. it's more he's contacting through his lyrics and music. even that is distant and probably unreceived. i relate to it in that for me, when i hear this song (and a few others) i go through the same series of thoughts and emotions, but he'll never know. it's just me listening to another song and inconsequential to anyone else's life but mine. great freakin' song! (and the mountain goats' cover is also really good.) |

let me preface this by saying that i love the entire new album. BUT, this song stopped me in my tracks...it is so effing beautiful and haunting.
here's my stab at the meaning, for what it's worth. i think it is the speaker's attempt to rewrite history. this rewritten history is encased in a codex (thus the title). in this history, what was once a "slight of hand", meaning a trick done by or onto him, is then changed to "slide of hand", which to me gives the connotation of affection or tender touch. before he changes it, he says (and seemingly needs to believe) that "no one gets hurt". it's likely that in the true story of things, this is NOT the case. i think the water references could be the cleansing force... but in my humble opinion, i think maybe it's tears.
i am probably way off, but that's my initial reaction to it. |

oh man, talk about a quintessential 80s song! i love this song so much. it recently resurfaced in my collection on a mix my very special friend made...irony, but i digress.
i feel like this is very much straightforward with it's message. the speaker is wounded from a previous relationship, but i think his saying it's a stranger is more an indication that who he thought the other person was is not authentic. in this love, he loses himself too, so no one is real in the end. he never wants to go through this again, so he warns us in song form.
the thing is, when i hear this song, i cannot help but relate while simultaneously wanting him to be so, so wrong. sigh. what a great song. |

this is by far my FAVORITE song on the new album! it is soooo beautiful and sounds happy, but the lyrics are so dark and matter of fact. i absolutely love it. i think it is largely about an existential crisis type of some sort...and just really questioning it all. i relate to it 100% and the tune is just delightful. great job, arcade fire! |

i can't believe no one has commented on this song. i love this song 'cause it has such a real conflicted sadness to it. i could be projecting, but it seems it is about a girl who is with someone who she will always feel inadequate with, so she tries to be the bigger person and have that conversation. the thing is, she is hurting herself more than she already does by having to admit that. |

this is an amazing song. my favorite on SOTU. i've always been of the opinion that looking into someone's eyes tells you all you need to know about them. you can do whatever you want to put up any kind of front you'd want, but your eyes never lie. at least that's what my experience has been. i think this song reiterates that. probably why it hits me so hard. |
