This is actually somewhat of a sad song, it's about a guy who runs into a girl who broke his heart, and as they talk he finds out how bad her life has gotten. She is in a loveless and judging from the lyrics of the last verse possibly abusive relationship. And he's upset by this cause he thinks she deserves better and wants to help, but she won't let him. |

For me this song is about the complexity of love, about how something so wonderful can make you feel so horrible. Cohen's uses the bible as a way of saying that love is an imaculate and wonderful thing. Something that is worth singing praise to, but to contradict that, the parts of the bible he chooses show the pain love can cause. It shows how when you are in love you have to confront feelings of insecurity and inferiority that haunt you. And as painful as that is, you deal with it because it's far more painful to be without the person you love. |

When I heard this song I actually thought it had to do with suicide. If you look at all the verses they all seem to point out the disapointments the singer has had to deal with in his life, the realization that things are never going to be what he thought they would. Then the chorus itself is just the singer saying he wants to kill himself. He's saying he's never been happy with his life, and he's at a point where he doesn't want to deal with the sorrow anymore. |
