Okay this isnt a meaning, but I saw some choirs the other day. One of the choirs was a gay and lesbian choir called gay abandon, and they sang this song (it was great - they also did 'how much is that doggy in the window' as well as serious ones) But it just got me thinking about the meaning. Could it be he is actually gay and knew all along?
I know im being damn bigoted and stereotyping hugely here, but the lines "not the worlds most masculine" and "physical guy" could be like, clues towards that.
Also "I'd never kissed a woman before"...
Aaaaah well, it could be a transexual aswell.

I have to agree with malachite on the television metaphor, but especially the turtley goodness point!! Finally someone who appreicates the true value of Dr Suess stories fixed with funk rock, and dodgy voices! Masterpiece.
Anyway the song is just all about people losing their imagination for entertainment and taking what is being fed to them. Maybe a hint of rebelliousness at what we are forcefed by the mass media? No thats just me being anarchist |

Never knew this was a song. Well personally, i think this is a very deep song. I can really relate to the undercurrents of emotion running through the sweeping chorus and the beautiful harmonys. The breathtaking lyrics just make it all the more stunning. A true classic of our time. If only they made more songs like this. In fact, all their songs should be like this. Come to think of it, all their songs should be this. With different names, and possibly different animals. Like marmosets. |

I so love the self harm interpretation. That may not have been what it was intended, but it is a pretty good way of explaining what its like.
Soft spoken with a broken jaw
Step outside but not to brawl
Both the lines make references to being injured, but not necessarily from fighting.
The scar tissue that i wish you saw...If you do cut yourself or whatever, half the time you want other people to know what its like, what you are going through, but half the time you are scared they could think of you differently as a person for doing it. Arg im totally of the subject of the song now, sorry. |

I totally agree with FreeofInsanity, Anthony Keidis writes words to fit in with the music, sings to make music rather than tell a story. But anyone who writes songs knows that you have to have some theme in mind or you cant even write. I reckon he is just writing about trippin, hallucinating maybe. Many many references to drugs in the song if you read them with it in mind.

im wondering why darktoss called avril lavigne a 'commy'? Never knew she was communist, or has that become a serious insult now? Anyway yeah, about loving your family, and on a wider scale, everyone! The family thing could be about people. Dont be selfish, love your brother type thing. And while it isnt their best song if you ask me, its the one they do best live by far and away, and they think that too. You can tell by the way they always end on it, and drag it out. on that debate, the chilis have changed so much from the funk band to the (I have to say it) Pop band they are now, you can be a fan of the bands later albums. Maybe not after hearing one song but after a couple of albums. I love them all personally (Yertle the turtle, oh yes) but anyway. I know people relate all their songs to drugs, and i can see why, so im going to do they same thing. Howsabout this guy is a drug dealer (set you up to get on top). Fits well with the badass theme. yeah Anthony Kiedis wrote a lot of songs about being lonely, losing friends, and drug addictions. Most of them had the moer serious issues hidden just beneath the surface (see aeroplane). This one was a lot more obvious, and honest. I think thats why so many people like it so much. Having said that, Im going to give you an alternative. The end part (under the bridge downtown) could also be about someone killing themselves, with drawing blood and forgetting about their love. But yeah i reckon about drugs seeming like the only thing that could help someone out of a depression. |

the chant is just sounds, not actual words. If he was ssaying words it would tell you in tha sleeve with the album. About the meaning, the lyrics are there to support the music. He is using his voice as an insrtument, just to make the music sound better rather than tell a story or explain a feeling. |

Stop putting each other down like five year olds (contradictory i know but i couldnt resist the chance to seem supirior) Having said all that, Im one of those annoying people that points out in many songs, the lyrics are just words and sentances that fit well with and suppliment the music. This type of lyric has just as much value as lyrics that tell a story, but it changes how the song works. All of the white stripes songs shoudl be listened to as mucis first, with lyrics and meanings second. |

When I saw them live a few weeks ago Matt said it was about an experience he had a few years ago, when the band was tiny. He's a really funny guy, and so amazing live. But anyway, he was talking about doing a gig in germany (with a band playing 'acid jazz' - which he claims is the worst type of music you can imagine) in a brothel. So while he was doing the gig, his wife who he had recently married didnt want to stay in the brothel, so she wandered off. In his words "I dont know if you've been to dortmund, but in the daylight its bad - in the dark its f*ckin terrifying." So he wrote the song about looking for his wife in the dark streets of a german city. Thats what inspired him anyway - its about love, see the rest of the album :p |
