Radiohead – Codex Lyrics 11 years ago
Another commenter nailed it. I can't believe I didn't see it, baptism. Whatever is haunting the narrator, he has baptized himself in the lake and washed his sins away and is innocent by the end of the song.

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

(In binary 11 is 3, 10 is 2.)

Sleight of hand
Jump off the end
Into a clear
a lake
No-one around

This entire portion seems to suggest that the narrator has something he is hiding on his mind. Maybe a betrayal. When you first hear "jump off the end" one tends to think something awful particularly when the music resolves at that moment to a more pleasing and comforting harmony (suggesting perhaps jumping off the end is going to resolve the problem). Off the end of what? A bridge? A building? No. Presumably a pier into a lake. That seems almost comforting considering the possible image and the tense harmonies of the song at the point. But what is he hiding? What is the betrayal. Could "Codex" have something to do with it? A codex is an ancient manuscript in book form (or with pages folded accordion style as opposed to a scroll). All ancient manuscripts of the bible were written as codices. Could it be that the narrator has done something or thought something that goes against his religious convictions?

Just dragonflies
Fantasized
No-one gets hurt
You done nothing wrong

But at this moment, now, there is no-one around. Dragonflies seem to evoke childhood innocence. It seems the narrator is either convincing himself that whatever is haunting him isn't actually something that is wrong. Again I speculate that this has something to do with going against what his religion teaches. He is realizing that he hasn't hurt anyone and he hasn't done anything wrong. What could it be? The narrator gives one hint: "Fantasized." Fantasized about what? It isn't clear, but fantasizing doesn't hurt anyone and most people would say that just fantasizing about something isn't doing anything wrong.

Slide your hand
Jump off the end
The water's clear
And innocent.

"Slide your hand" is clearly a play on words from "sleight of hand." Has the narrator resolved whatever was haunting him? The water is clear and innocent with him in it. Hence, the narrator is innocent.

Someone could use a quick trip to wikipedia...

A codex (Latin caudex for "trunk of a tree" or block of wood, book; plural codices) is a book made up of a number of sheets of paper, vellum, or similar, with hand-written content[1], usually stacked and bound by fixing one edge and with covers thicker than the sheets, but sometimes continuous and folded concertina-style. The alternative to paged codex format for a long document is the continuous scroll.

Among the most famous codices were the early manuscripts of the bible whose authors broke the tradition of using continuous scrolls and put their works in codex format instead.

Does that change your view of the meaning of this song?

José González – Heartbeats Lyrics 17 years ago
This is clearly a song about young people who had a night of passion that lead to a pregnancy and how they cope with that pregnancy and the confusion and frustration surrounding their changed lives.

One night to be confused
One night to speed up truth

We don't know it by these lines, but the lovers only had one night together. They were speeding up the truth of the love of their relationship by having sex together.

We had a promise made
Four hands and then away

It was only supposed to be one night, that was the promise. Just them together for that night and then never again.

Both under influence

Obviously this means they were both drunk.

We had divine scent
To know what to say
Mind is a razor blade

This is sexual imagery. They both knew how to act to get one another into bed. And they both wanted to be there.

To call for hands from above to lean on
Would that be good enough for me?

This is a chorus of them both thinking to themselves that marriage (to call for hands from above) is not good enough for them. Just the one night of passion is what they want, no committments.

One night of magic rush
The start: a simple touch

This represents the sex act itself.

One night to push and scream
And then relief

This is the result. One night to push and scream is the act of having a baby followed by relief from the pain.

Ten days of perfect tunes
The colors red and blue
We had a promise made
We were in love

This represents the marriage that resulted from the pregnancy that was the result of what was only supposed to last one night.

To call for hands from above to lean on
Would that be good enough for me?

To call for hands from above to lean on
Would that be good enough?

And yet, they question the whole idea of marriage still.

And you
You knew the hand of the devil

Not even calling upon the hands from above to lean on could overcome the hands of the devil. The implications are that the relationship is coming apart despite the fact that they got married.

And you
Kept us awake with wolves teeth

The other lover stayed up all night fighting.

Sharing different heartbeats in one night

Marriage is often described as sharing one heartbeat. So this line is about a marriage coming apart.

To call for hands from above to lean on
Would that be good enough for me now?

To call for hands from above to lean on
Would that be good enough?

Now they question the idea that the simple fact that they are married coud save their relationship. Moreover, they seem to question their very faith that the hands from above would be enough to save their marriage.

It's a georgeous song. I absolutely love it, one of my top 10, but I'm not so sure that Sony really wanted this message to be associated with their products. It's a shame that their target audience is so inept at understanding the meanings behind songs. That just because the lyrics "the colors red and blue" are in a song that it makes it perfect for a commercial hucking a TV. It reminds me when Jaguire used "London Calling" by the clash (a song about nuclear war, global warming, etc) to sell Jaguires simply because the song had the word London in its lyrics.

Very sad.

Why doesn't radiohead play this song live? I'll tell you why, they dispise pop. They dispise the fact that off of an album they considered strong (pablo honey) this was the only song that didn't get smashed to pieces by critics.

No Radiohead doesn't hate their fans, they hate people who love pop, and they make music that the pop lovers will hate. Unfortunately for the pop lovers, they are missing out on some of the greatest music. From OK Computer (Exit Music for a Film being my Fav) to Amnesiac (I'm most partial to life in a glasshouse) radiohead's music can't be beat.

P.S. Radiohead did a tribute to this song...My Iron Lung. Creep as much as they hate the hype around the song, is what kept them alive when they were starting out. And they know it.

they lyric is not the sun won't rise another day,
it is the sun will rise another day. That makes so much more sense if you think about it. In many of PJ's songs they like to focus on human tragedy and the fact that the world keeps right on moving...which is even more tragic to the loved ones of that person sometimes.

I can't help but get choked up for the lyric I have wished for so long, how I wish for you today.

Looking at this lyric submission, there are several errors in it. I think I'll submit corrections.

Incidentally, the best version of this song is on America Tribute to Heros CD from the 9-11 fundraiser.

Pearl Jam – Jeremy Lyrics 21 years ago
92 and Sunny before Jeremy shot himself.
92 and Sunny after Jeremy shot himself.

The world keeps right on going, even if you don't.

The video is properly disturbing in the edited version. They did not cut out the part with the kids raising their hands like nazis. The camera is panning in one direction in front of the class with their hands over their hearts (obviously saying the pledge) and then momentarily reverses direction and you see the class with their arms outstretched in the nazi salute and then reverses direction again to them saying the pledge. That always gives me chills. It's a comment on how we breed intolerance in the schools and then are surprised when this stuff happens.

It does not however glorify Jeremy's actions. The song makes it clear that his actions are to be abhored...and unfortunately for jeremy, are as forgettable as the weather ultimately.

try to forget this. try to erase this [jeremy's brains] from the black board. Of course, the kids in the class are bound to have plenty of problems.

Pearl Jam – Nothingman Lyrics 21 years ago
This is a great song. Here's what I think the lyrics mean

-Once divided...nothing left to subtract...
once the relationship is over (the people are divided), there isn't anything left between the two to take away.

-Some words when spoken...can't be taken back...
Sometimes when you break up with a person, you can't just take that back no mater what

-Walks on his own...with thoughts he can't help thinking...
Some here say this relates to Kurt Cobain, and that very well may be. But to me it seems to fit into the premise of a break up quite well. More specifically the song is about a guy that broke up with a girl and then regrets it. Hence, he's on his own (all alone) with thoughts of regret that he can't help thinking.

-Future's above...but in the past he's slow and sinking...
Hindsight is 20/20. He saw himself bogged down in the relationship while he was in it...you know slow and sinking.

-Caught a bolt 'a lightnin'...cursed the day he let it go...
The girl is clearly the "bolt 'a lightnin" that he now is kicking himself for letting go.

-Nothingman... (2x)
-Isn't it something?
-Nothingman...
What he is, what the relationship was...

-She once believed in every story he had to tell
-One day she stiffened, took the other side
Pretty self explanatory. Why did she stiffen? Did he lie to her or is it because he broke up with her? the rest of this verse makes it seem as though she "stiffened" before he broke up with her which seems to me that he lied to her or hurt her somehow before he broke up with her. At any rate, she doesn't take his side anymore.

-Empty stares...from each corner of a shared prison cell...
One just escapes...one's left inside the well...
This lyric is what makes me think that the relationship was a burden and was pretty much over before he broke up with her. The prison cell is a metaphor for the relationship they were in. The well is a metaphor for the vast empty nothing left over after she escapes. He didn't have to use the prison cell and escapes refrence. They connotate the state of the relationship and the need to be free of it, and just how hard it is to get free of it. Probably the most important lyrics of the song.

-And he who forgets...will be destined to remember...oh...oh...oh...
He who forgets what? He who forgets the love he has for the other person will be destined not to be able to forget that love.

-Oh, she don't want him...
-Oh, she won't feed him...after he's flown away...
She doesn't care about him at all now that he has broken up with her.

-Oh, into the sun...ah, into the sun...
A refrence to Icarus (the myth of the father and son that fashioned wings from feathers and wax. The son Icarus flew too close to the sun, the wax melted and he plummeted to his death). The guy wanted to escape from the relationship, and when he tried, he flew too close to the sun and got burned, and now he's paying the price.

-Coulda' been something
Could have...if only he wouldn't have...
