Poe – Angry Johnny Lyrics 21 years ago
Yes, you're right about how Johnny is the name of somone in House of Leaves. However, this CD was released in 1995, House of Leaves: 2000. I remember reading a quote from Poe that said she often (and her brother too) uses the name "Johnny" because it's a name for the "every man." It's generic, and that's why she and Mark use it. "Johnny" could be anyone.

Alanis Morissette – You Oughta Know Lyrics 21 years ago
I love this song... I think one of the things that makes it so powerful is that it really shows raw emotion. Alanis does not sugar-coat her how she's feeling during this song. It's unedited and honest. For anyone that's been in a situation like this (I'm sure a lot of us have), you can relate. It's her gut reaction to what has happened. When you feel you've been wronged like this, as Alanis does, your thoughts often tend to be full of rage and maybe even violence. But these are just thoughts she has, things she yearns to say to him, but can't and probably never will. Instead, she's left with all this pent-up hurt and anger. SUCH an amazing song. It blows me away every time I hear it.

Poe – Amazed Lyrics 21 years ago
I can definitely see how its relates to her relationship with her father. But also, for anyone who has read House of Leaves, do you see how this song could be Karen's perspective about Navidson? After I read the book and listened to this song again, that is the thought that immediately jumped into my mind. Karen knows how she feels about things and where she stands but with him, things are different and she is "amazed." The same rules don't apply anymore. Also, the part where the song says, "When push comes to shove what I'd give to you - Everything - I'm amazed, The hallways I wouldn't mind crawling through...": This part right away brought to my mind the part in House of Leaves where Karen, in spite of having left Navidson and the house, returns there to find him and even goes into the hallway, disregarding and facing her own clausterphobia. And she is stunned that she is able to do this. Why does she? Because in the end, ("when push comes to shove...") she does care about Navidson.
I don't know, just a thought.
P.S. Actually, Poe's father died in 1993. Check Poe's "Haunted" CD jacket. She was in her 20's when he died, not a child.

Esthero – Song For Holly Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with what Miss Mess has said about this song. Adding to that, I think one idea the song presents is the power of a woman. The lyrics explicitly say that she can make this person want/need her. How does she feel about that person? My interpretation is that this is someone she used to love and be in a relationship with, but has since realized he is not right for her. But she can make him think that everything his fine. Furthmore, he wants her to stay around when she doesn't. She says that the harder he tries to do this, the less efective it's going to be. She has already made up her mind and is ready stand on her own two feet. For a while she was content with being someone she wasn't, but has discovered she does not need to do that. Anyway, this is probably my favorite Esthero song. It's incredibly powerful and moving.

Kristen Barry – Ordinary Life Lyrics 21 years ago
This is one of my most favorite songs. The first time I heard it I thought it was just amazing and I needed to find out who sang it. (I have since purchased her CD and it's also very good) Anyway, it's a love song. What makes this song so effective and beautiful to me is that it's realistic. It's something we can all relate to and understand. She talks about letting her walls down and allowing this person whom she loves to know the real her, flaws and all. The fact that she is able to do this with him makes her grateful, for lack of a better word, and makes her love him even more. Besides the lyrics being so expressive, there's Kristen's voice. She sings with such passion and it is evident that she's putting her heart into it. I would recommend that anyone who has not heard this download it if you can.

U2 – Where The Streets Have No Name Lyrics 21 years ago
I think the central theme of this song is the band's dreaming of a better world, one of freedom, equality, peace and personal courage. It's a social/personal commentary, like many U2 songs. One of my favorites from U2.
