this song is about sleeping around "Many times I've gazed along the open road." means many times I've thought about all the different women I could be sleeping with. "Many times I've wondered how much there is to know. " how much there is to know about women "You really ought to know..." you realy ought to sleep around a bit. Think about it. All the lyrics fit this idea and the idea fits the band philosophy about women |

I cant beleive that nobody has nailed the meaning of this song yet! It was obvious to me the first time I heard this song that it was about sleeping around! The first four lines are about his desire for women. Then - "Many times I've gazed along the open road." He keeps looking for more women "Many times I've wondered how much there is to know" (about women) "You really ought to know..." -(You really ought to sleep around) I know I havent explained myself well but I cant be bothered doing a better job. Just think about it, it all fits. -Know |

| I think this is only a highly cynical song if you look at the lyrics in a highly cynical way and I feel sorry for those people how do so. He can't know for sure that he will or will not find the woman of his dream and the song represents his uncertainty. For me this song is about hope and having the courage to pursue your dreams. The idea that he might not achieve his dreams makes them all the more beautiful. | |

If I had to choose a song to be the greatest ever I would choose Stairway but I wouldn?t argue that point like some kind of idiot because it?s all just a matter of taste and there?s no argument in taste. I don?t think I?ve ever heard a song that?s had more symbolism in it than Stairway. All that symbolism makes the song hard to understand but also allows listeners to attach their own meaning and that?s why Stairway is widely regarded as the greatest song ever. Anyone who tries to tell you that Stairway isn?t a great song is just trying to irritate you by making ludicrous statements that have absolutely no reasonable basis so don?t let them get to you. Either that or they?re just really dumb. If any member of Led Zeppelin didn?t like Stairway it was only ever because it was TOO popular and hence became uncool. But deep down I?m sure they still loved it. I agree with RAin_fUL. My favourite Led Zeppelin song is Ramble On. Stairway is not about Lord Of The Rings, its about real life. But it does use references to Lord Of The Rings in its symbolism as in many Led Zeppelin songs (misty mountain hop, ramble on, etc). I wouldn?t presume to know the absolutely correct meaning of Stairway because there isn?t one. I?m sure that even the members of Led Zeppelin had there own interpretation of the lyrics just as you should have your OWN interpretation. But the first thing you?ve got to realise when deciding what you think about stairway is that the song?s creators were, almost undoubtably, very VERY high. That?s probably why it?s about so many things because when your high it?s fun to ponder meaningful things and their complex interrelationships. Some of the song?s meanings are obvious, some are just plain tripy, but it?s all really good! If your having any trouble finding a meaning to Stairway, or any Led Zeppelin song for that matter, just get high! For some of the people who have posted this page it would do them a world of good. If you can?t bring yourself to let your hair down then for the internests sake, please just get laid. |
