Prefab Sprout – Desire As Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is so sad & beautiful. It's one of those mood-altering ditties. People who have been in seemingly good relationships, yet were cheated on (or cheated), can surely relate.
The "I've got six things on my mind, you're no longer one of them," lyric is one of my favs of all time.

Dark & sexy, just how I like it. The imagery just comes to life in your mind as you listen.

The Divine Comedy – If... Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is great! Funny, honest and sweet.

And seriously, how many love songs have lyrics as brilliant as this:
"If you were a horse
I'd clean the crap out of your stable
And never once complain"

Goldfrapp – Human Lyrics 21 years ago
He's a smooth-talking, cold-hearted, b*tch-slapping man. She realises this and still wants him. They're both not human! lol

Rufus Wainwright – Poses Lyrics 21 years ago
I read this song as being about a guy who has gotten by on his looks and bought into that whole model-type lifestyle with all its attractions. Methinks the boy was so in love with his own reflection and thought he would be young and handsome forever (the "classical virtue"), and therefore lived his life in a narcissistic, decadent sort of way, preferring surface over substance and depth. Perhaps compliments on his looks encouraged him to just cultivate the aspect of his being and forget about the more important things.

Some very wise person (heh) had warned him to "watch his head about it" but he didn't listen so now he's "drunk and wearing flip-flops on Fifth Avenue". Now that he's older he probably hates the skin he's in, because his attitude and those "poses" are "no longer boyish" and therefore instead of being endearing as they were in the past, they make him look like a pathetic figure.

The Carpenters – Rainy Days and Mondays Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with the Mondays part, but I like rainy days, and it's been scientifically proven that they do counter sadness. But never mind that, this song is lovely. It seems to me pretty straightforward- it's about a girl whose got the mopes (could be clinically depressed, seems this is a regular occurence). Her "friend" (could be a man or woman, it doesn't specify) and the fact that they love her makes it all better.

The Carpenters – Close to You Lyrics 21 years ago
This is one of those songs that is so sweet and pretty, yet is also so corny that only the brave few will admit to liking it.

What a guy, he inspires this chickie to think he's got some participation mystique AND the magic mojo working on the whole of nature and humanity. Who knows? Maybe he does. Could be she's singing about Merlin the Magician. She's a groupie of his, yeah. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Love it! Very heartfelt delivery, and nice, ironic lyrics. How can one go wrong?

Smokey Robinson – The Tears Of A Clown Lyrics 21 years ago
"Now there's some sad things known to man
but ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown"

Sing it, Smokey! This is such a great song, it's pretty obvious (at least to me) that it's about a guy whose girl left him and he's still so sad about it. The 'clown' act is to hide his feelings.

Christopher Cross – Best That You Can Do (Arthur's Theme) Lyrics 21 years ago
Cheese at its finest.

I love the "When you get caught between the moon and New York City" bit. There's something almost perverted about being caught in such a position. (Hey, I'm kidding!)

Chicago – If You Leave Me Now Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with all three who have posted comments before me. Everyone I know calls me a dork for listening to sappy '70's-'80's era love ballads (and not just for their camp value) but you know, in an age where most everyone's a cynic, the honesty and emotion in the lyrics is definitely welcomed. Glad to know I'm not the only one who likes this song for something other than its '*wink, wink*, tongue planted firmly in cheek' value. Just gorgeous, that's what this song is.

Paul Davis – I Go Crazy Lyrics 21 years ago
Amazing this one hadn't yet been added- alas, that's been remedied. This is a song that always has a visceral impact on me, no matter how many times I listen to it. We most of us have someone who we 'still go crazy' over, and even if we don't, the earnestness of the lyrics and the open, vulnerable way in which Paul Davis sings could move even the coldest of human beings. I know that even as a child, way before I ever had a relationship, when I heard this song I'd get all melancholy. Man, am I ever a sentimental softy.
