Pearl Jam – Red Mosquito Lyrics 20 years ago
Gforce38,

Eddie has mentioned that the lyrics came to him while he was sick and bedridden; a pesky mosquito kept entering the room he was in, threatning him with its stinger.

Eddie's drug of choice appears to be the bottle of crimson wonder, not Heroin's poppy powder of doom.

Also, given the uplifting nature of many of No Code's songs (in contrast to the first three PJ records), I doubt that Eddie was dabbling in heroin during the No Code sessions.

Im Iranian, you may not know this, but your philosophies are known as "Value-free relativism", which essentially means reality and what is defined as right and wrong are determined by the individual. If your philosophy was the dominant tenet of our society, you would not be here right now espousing your views on songmeanings, as somebody would have already taken your life by now. When their is no concept of right and wrong, we live in a state of anarchy, dog eat dog reigns supreme, and might is right.

Every read any Greek Philosophy, or Ayn Rand? I do not doubt for on minute that you are totally ignorant or stupid, I just feel you are misguided, not to mention that your ideas are a clone of your professed idols (System Of A Down). You seem thoughtful and articulate enough, so why so much hate?

Again, why so much hate?

Seriously now, Im Iranian, following your logic, it appears that if I was to build a house on a plot of land, you would feel that this is a crime worse than killing somebody. You feel that America is worse than Nazi Germany? Well, I certainly am grateful that we live in this country and that your hate speech is protected. In many countries you would not have the right to spout your hate, and in many countries I would have the right to kill you for it.

I am also thankful to live in America.

Well, Mr. Im Iranian.

If murder is not so bad, shall we spend 5 minutes alone together sometime soon? Your comments are offensive to me, and if I were to ever knowingly encounter you somewhere, I would have my weapon ready, as it appears you are a highly violent individual. As I oppose violence and follow the wisdon of Bruce Lee, I would not initiate a violent physical attack upon you, but I am quite disturbed by many of your comments here.

And yes my friend, if you attempted physical harm on me or any of my loved ones, I would kill you, smash your eyeballs against the wall, and write "piggy" in your blood!!

Im Iranian:

As a follow up question, why would you ignore the BAD ideas of Manson because of the morals that YOU have been taught?

Yeah, Charles Manson was anti-establishment and cool ... so much so that he basks in the adoration of thousands of malcontents (Daron Malakian apparently included) and brainwashed a group of young people into despicable acts. Pretty anti-establishment if you ask me.

Seriously now, how much more "establishment" can one be than to create and control the minds of others? For all of Charles Manson's diatribes against the "establishment", he was quite the purveyor of an "establishment", wasn't he?

... not to mention the "race war" that he hoped to bring into fruition that would lead to the "niggers" (Charles Manson's own words) taking over, being too stupid to rule (again, the words of mr. manson, whose name I will from this point on fail to capitalize), and him and his horde of "followers" would return to the cities and take over from the "stupid niggers" (direct manson quote). Yeah, very anti-establishment.

The fact is, artists from Guns N Roses to System Of A Down to Motley Crue to Marilyn Manson understand that controversy sells records. And they are laughing all the way to the bank at your expense .......

Im Iranian:

With all due respect, it must now be stated that Charles Manson has on several occassions carved the Nazi symbol upon his forehead, as well as espoused racist views. If you are truly of Iranian decent, then you should take issue with a man who feels that because he is white he is superior to you.

So you hate fucks like me? Give me three reasons that you believe that Charles Manson is a "very smart individual" and I will continue this conversation with you. If you fail to do so, I will completely ignore any future posts of yours, and advise others to do so also.

Kdog, please post that interview. Their is quite a bit of controversy over this one and I was out of the country when that issue of Guitar hit the newsstands.

Manson's views on the envirornment were gold, but if he was a killer, I see nothing good about saluting him. Murdering kind of makes his other ideas meaningless, doesn't it?

I would love to see the article, and would love to hear opposing viewpoints.

Pearl Jam – Why Go Lyrics 21 years ago
Another stroke of genius from Pearl Jam. Her parents have put her in this place because they are not willing to take responsibility upon themselves for the child they have raised.

Hopefully, through Eddie Vedder's lyrics, people who hear this song will mature into better parents. Songs like "Why Go" are among the many excellent Pearl Jam songs that entertain us while teaching us a lesson. Art of the highest order.

Pearl Jam – Red Mosquito Lyrics 21 years ago
About life's little reminders. A stub in the toe, a pulled muscle, a mosquito bite; while we may try to stay two steps ahead of our adversaries (the Devil is quite an adversary, isn't he), they will catch up with us at some point on our journey. The last line "If I had known then what I know now" refers to the little lessons we learn from our setbacks, we learn because we have experienced.

Incubus – I Miss You Lyrics 21 years ago
Incubus is top notch when it comes to expressing emotions through their songs that we call can relate to. Any artist can write about an emotion, but it takes a talented one to craft the words in such a way that it just feels so right, and we can apply it to situations in our own lives.

Through lyrics like "To see you when I wake up is a gift I didn't think could be real" and "I see your picture, I smell your skin on the empty pillow next to mine", Brandon Boyd is painting pictures for us to look at while we listen to the song. Through these descriptions, we can picture moment's in our own lives that we can relate to the song. And when I personally am alone and missing that special someone, I can listen to this song and, ya know, kinda not feel so alone!

Incubus is an amazing band, and everything they do has artistic quality and merit; they are one of the best (if not the best) band out right now. I recommend all of their music, from the funky "Enjoy Incubus" to the slammin' "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" to the amazing hits of "Make Yourself" and, perhaps their best album yet, "Morning View" with it's reflective grooves and vast array of emotions. Check them out in concert also, they are everything that you hear on the CD but with so much more energy and intensity. You will have the night of your life! Take someone special to enjoy this special band with!!

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 21 years ago
System Of A Down seem to be painting with broad brushes here, something they have shown a tendency to do on many of their songs, fostering a "Us Vs. Them" mentality. This can at times be provoke deep thinking, but can also annoy and become burdensome.

That being said, I feel that it is slightly ignorant for a musical group (or anybody for that matter) to make a blanket statement like "Science has failed our world". I could get really deep, philosophical, and admittedly boring here so I am going to pratice the art of "KISS" (keep it simple stupid).

To point the finger at "science" in and of itself is to place blame on a "non-living" entity. In other words, the people that wield science (scientists) can be rightly blamed, but to blame science itself is a bit of a reach.

It is easy to see how many people here view SOAD as "ignorant" on this issue. At the same time, SOAD is obviously urging us to question many of the things we hold as "truths". In that respect, SOAD has succeeded with this song. While I don't think it is a good idea to go around and make blanket statements like they do in this song, if we view the song as a vehicle to help us think, than I think SOAD have accomplished something worthwhile here.

Queen – A Kind of Magic Lyrics 21 years ago
Queen was excellent at capturing a mood in their music that fits well into big screen movies. Freddie Mercury's voice was capable of displaying so much emotion, and it is no suprise that movie producers and directors have used Queen's music in movies.

Judas Priest – Exciter Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is speed metal par excellence with excellent guitar work from K.K. and Glenn. Given the time this album was released, I think it's safe to say that this was some of the fastest tempoed music of it's time. Judas Priest inspired countless metal bands and their early work is acclaimed by critics and fans alike.

KoЯn – Freak on a Leash Lyrics 21 years ago
If you think this is a great song, you should take a listen to "Good God" off of "Life Is Peachy".

Jonathan Davis is just rehashing his old ideas to a lesser effect. I agree that their is emotion, but it just starts to get old and tired after the 47th consecutive song.

... not to mention the polish of their new sound. It is painfully obvious here that Korn are going for mainstream acceptance instead of artistic integrity.

KoЯn – Freak on a Leash Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is a fairly meaningless slew of word's strung together, it's painfully obvious why this particular board has become a oversized food fight.

Korn have shown no lyrical growth from their first two albums, in fact, their lyrics have regressed. Jon Davis still has a powerful voice, but these lyrics are too losely construed to have any real effect on the listener. The same old tired routine. It's no wonder that a lot of Korn's original fans jumped ship around the time of "Follow The Leader".

KoЯn – Good God Lyrics 21 years ago
Kinda makes you not want to get involved with someone of something that doesn't care for you.

Korn's music has a way of helping the listener to exorcise their demon's. It certainly isn't pretty, but life isn't all roses and honeybees is it?

I really like the "Life Is Peachy" album. It is completely raw and unpolished, like they didn't care about pleasing the listener with it, or selling a million copies. Jonathan Davis and Korn wanted to exorcise their own personal demons, and through their music they have helped others to do so. An experience called "catharsis".

On their next album, "Follow The Leader", some of this would appear to be sacrificed by a more polished sound and less raw energy and aggression.

Metallica – To Live Is to Die Lyrics 21 years ago
"To Live Is To Die" is a colossal masterpiece of epic songwriting. Metallica create a wall of sound on this song that can only be described as "orchestral"; Beethoven would be proud.

Metallica could have scribbled a bunch of lyrics that touched on their sadness at Cliff's passing. This would have showed us the sadness they feel, but Metallica understood that lyric's can be interpreted in many different ways. Thus, Metallica composed what is perhaps their most beautiful music ever, the music is fully capable of bringing tears to your eyes in a way that lyrics (with their ambiguities) cannot always accomplish.

From interviews with Kirk, James, and Lars, Cliff Burton appears to be a "no nonesense", "no bullshit pretensions" kind of person. That being said, what better way to say "farewell" to Cliff than to compose a piece of music so evocative of sadness and mourning that no lyrics are even necessary.

As a testament to Cliff's "brutal honesty", Metallica chooses as the only lyrics in the song a poem by Cliff, spoken against the backdrop of Metallica's earth shattering music. A poem that speaks of Cliff's frustrations with the world, yet at the same time shows that he is hopeful that something greater than this World exists, the "Kingdom of Salvation". This is a constant them that runs through all of Metallica's music, that shred of hope that exists even when all around is darkness. This quality, coupled with their amazing instrumental talents, assures Metallica's place in history with the "Immortals" of music.

Pearl Jam – W.M.A. Lyrics 21 years ago
Dave Abbruzzese was an excellent drummer, he had chops and skills galore without ever "over-playing"; his fills were exciting to listen to but would never take away from the song. Thus, some of his most amazing work may be overlooked because of it's subtley. Take the song "Immortality" as an example of his amazing ear for melody. When Eddie sings the line "some die just to live", Dave hits a crash cymbal immediately after that sounds very much like a gunshot. This simple single drumbeat sends chills through my spine everytime I hear it, the timing of the beat and the sound it produces coming from pure Dave Abbruzzese genius.

After Dave left, Pearl Jam did continue to experience with tribal songs, most notably "In My Tree" from No Code.

"W.M.A." is another Pearl Jam masterpiece in which the lyric and melody effotlessly intertwine to tell the story of Eddie's Black friend who suffered harrassment at the hands of a white male anglo-saxon police officer. Eddie's amazing voice is showcased as he manages to sing above the din of the relentless tribal drumming and Earth-shaking bass line of Jeff Ament, a talent that places him in the same league as the "Greats", Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison, and Roger Daltrey.

Above and beyond the technical wonders of this song is the way in which Eddie Vedder's vocals display anger yet despair at the same time. Clearly, Eddie is upset at his friend's harrassment, but at the same time his vocal tone shows us how saddening it is that we live in a society that is not color blind. Eddie's mastery of lyric, melody, and emotional resonance make this a Pearl Jam song not to be overlooked. "W.M.A." will go done in the record books as one of Pearl Jam's "lost masterpieces".

Pearl Jam – Immortality Lyrics 21 years ago
I view the line "There's a trapdoor in the sun" as an allusion to the phrase "It's better to burn out than to fade away". Those who commit suicide often romanticize about going out in a big way, and thus acheiving "Immortality". If one listens to the manner in which Vedder sings the word "Immortality (regretfully), one finds a window into Vedder's feelings on suicide. Eddie Vedder is an amazing artist in that he can convey his feelings on issues that effect us all in a way that is unique and quite poetic. And in their music, Pearl Jam have fashioned an "immortal" anthem to the act we call "suicide", whether it be Cobain or anybody who chooses this route of escape

Metallica – Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Lyrics 21 years ago
One of the greatest songs ever written about other people's misconceived notions of who YOU are. This song is an anthem to anybody who has ever wrongly been accused of something.

Metallica has composed their masterpiece with "Sanitarium". The lyrics can be applied to many different circumstances in life, yet the underlying meaning of the song is quite clear. Far and away the best Metallica song ever, and worth the price of the "Master Of Puppets" cd alone.

The Apex Theory – Apossibly Lyrics 21 years ago
These guys totally rocked at Ozzfest. It's a crying shame that they were second stage and only were given 30 minutes. Do yourselves a favor and check these guys out at a club show. They will tear the roof off.

This song appears to be about a relationship. The intro note (all of Apex's songs have intro notes featured in the intro bookled) is a simple statement, "21 was nice". I view this as Andy looking back on being 21 and a realtionship he was in at the time. If Andy has anything in common with myself and most males that I know, looking back on 21 can be enlightening due to the fact that we feel so much wiser now than then.

Very obscure lyrics. I still haven' t placed "Pigeons circle my roof, ten to a hundred times a day, nothing stops them from feeding on the grass that we lay astray". Many possible meanings.

Generally, I just groove to the awesome rhythms and melodies of this song and let the vocals take me to another place. Amazing song from an amazing band.
