| A truly breathtakingly brilliant song - one which has provided a soundtrack to my life many times over the years. For me, the song is about realising, out of nowhere, that you are desperately in love with someone who previously featured in your life in a completely different capacity, but the tragedy is the fleeting nature of the relationship, and only realising afterwards what a powerful and unique moment it was. As an aside, I strongly suspect, given the Balearic feel of the song, the mention of the ocean in the first line, and the fact that during this period New Order were writing and recording in Ibiza, that the situation that inspired the song happened to Barney amid the searingly hot, lusty climes of the Mediterranean. The crystaline, celestial, eerie keyboard lines just add to the feeling that he's living with a ghost - the spectre of the lost love that was short-lived but profoundly intense and never far from his thoughts. Truly makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear this song. | |
