The song is all about following your dreams; carpe diem, seize the day.... the rat is the singer, telling you he (I am) is leaving his dull, boring life behind, to follow his dreams... You may not get all you dream of, "She didn't want to know, She couldn't see the show" ....However you must find you own way of; "being Oh So Cool, like a Blue Blooded, Well Studded English Fool .... It's better to try then at least then you'll know, rather than, forever be saying, What if... if Only... I feel trapped here.....

I believe the haunting melody leave us all wondering have we missed the deeper meaning and often if there's no deep meaning to be found we create one .... |

@[pcp:34402] Who is fighting who? Red shoes are special shoes that a dancer would wear for dancing... Special shoes in a world were so many don't own a pair of shoes ... it a reference to third world people wanting and needing to join the modern world, rather than starve. .. Bowie was referencing the 1948 film The Red Shoes... The couple have no choice that Dance the Blues... Blues being used as a reference for sadness .... It only because they have each other they the struggle is worthwhile that they keep dancing under the moonlight the serious moonlight..... |

On the surface this is just about a couple dancing... However put on your red shoes a reference to a 1948 movie The Red Shoes in which the ballet dancer has to keep dancing and cannot escape until her death....
The aboriginal couple have to dance (put on the clothes on the modern world) the red shoes and keep dancing for what they perceive as a better life... They find they are dancing the blues, blues being a reference to sadness, as they struggle to keep up appearances they grow disillusioned.... The only thing that makes it worthwhile is they have each other.... The rest is just an illusion .... |

The Rat is singer, he could have said, I am leaving town..... the song is about leaving a rut the dead end boring but comfortable life and following your dreams.... Although everything won't be as you imagined, you will be happier, as YOU find a New Way of being Oh So Cool like a Blue Blooded Well Studded English Fool.... It's better to follow your dreams, even if you fail at least you'll know, Much worse to stick in a life you hate wondering WHAT IT, If only...... |
