Irene Cara – Flashdance... What a Feeling Lyrics 2 years ago
Many particles of this song to enjoy... I really love, "bein's believing."

it underscores a dirty secret in life, that whatever you want to be all you have to do is believe it...

I say all you have to do but that's the hard part. Irene Cara acknowledges "a world made of steel/Made of stone" and that makes internal belief so difficult. You have to work to break this world down to see it's all about what you believe. And if you believe it, you be it.

Joni Mitchell – Song For Sharon Lyrics 2 years ago
To me this is such a an intense description of observing the people around you in your life. Feelings of resentment, regret, jealousy but also pride and confidence in your ways (and sometimes against all odds). Becuase all you have is yourself and what you have been, and what caused what you have been is impossible to define.

@[PolishPrisoner:36506] Agree, meanings are infinite here. It's a great song like that, it leaves so much space to fill with meaning: A whole sky's worth.

Beck – Side Of The Road Lyrics 3 years ago
I think about constructing an image of a future life, and investing yourself in that aspiration... and then when you attain that life state you realize it's not exactly how you aspired it to be, and you're left with the wasted years of that struggle.

And at that point, there's nothing you can do... "just let it pass..."

The Beach Boys – Caroline No Lyrics 3 years ago
Yes, @[androcles:35782], things are " irreversably altered" from how they used to be.

"The things that made me love you so much then
Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone."

I found myself listening to this song quite a bit in 2020. The life we knew it to be has gone away: we will never experience it the same way, much like how Brian Wilson describes. And while there may be benefits to our lived experience going forward, life has irrevocably changed and created the futile yearning to have the past back.

The Essex Green – The Late Great Cassiopia Lyrics 3 years ago
@[greened:35462] It does feel like this song is about someone trapped in the public eye, and I find the lyrics, "Was that the page that tells how I was falling?" interesting because it sounds like someone else is there with them commiserating or relating their shared experience with celebrity.

"Even giants have to watch how they decline..." is really interesting: even those who create the spectacle of their missteps have to watch the spectacle themselves: The people being watched are also watching themselves.

Belle & Sebastian – Seeing Other People Lyrics 3 years ago
I see this album with ash tinted glasses, this song enforcing my dim interpretation. It actually surprises me to read reactions to this album that label it light hearted and soft.

I think this song describes being captured between the temptation of a forbidden sexual indulgence and its actualization. The narrator seems anxiously cusping on a sexual encounter, fearing how to resolve the ensuing fallout of plunging into it, both personally and publicly.

This song’s eeriness comes from the elementary piano arpeggio paired with the narrator’s voice being like his conscience, plainly and coldly explaining consequences and outcomes like a mother-knows-best condescendingly tolerating unapproved behavior.

I tie this Kafka-esqueness the album cover featuring The Trial.

This album is half glass empty to me with Seeing Other People anchoring the diametrically opposed Mayfly and Judy and the Dream of Horses.

I see this album with ash tinted glasses, this song enforcing my dimly ominous interpretation. It actually surprises me to read reactions of this album as being light hearted and ultimately soft.

I think this song describes being captured in a situation between sexual indulgence and public exposure. The narrator seems anxiously cusping on a forbidden sexual encounter, and fearing how to resolve the ensuing fallout of its actualization, both personally and publicly.

This song’s eeriness comes from the elementary piano arpeggio paired with the narrator’s voice being like his conscience, plainly and coldly explaining consequences and outcomes like a know it all mother who condescendingly tolerates unapproved behavior.

This is the Kafka-esqueness I tie to the album cover featuring The Trial.

The Essex Green – Whetherman Lyrics 3 years ago
The three little vignettes here are so mysterious...

It makes me think about street living with the themes of theft and turning a blind eye, and how even dreary living situations are better than nothing.

I also think about how precarious convictions can be, and how quickly seeing the other side can seem

The chorus is so beautiful, I revel in its words more than the summation of any type of meaning.

And the sweet, sweet ending how she points at you so sincerely, breaking the fourth wall, leaving a cliff hanger: it invokes a want for some type of personal understanding she may be offering.

Maybe this song is also about exposure.

The Kinks – Do You Remember Walter? Lyrics 3 years ago
Just love the heroic images he starts with about playing cricket and smoking cigarettes. What a youth god. And then later he's this blobby bore, fully submitted to suburban monotony...Maybe that's all we really want after all.

@[benodictine:34625] Sometimes I feel like life just keeps passing by, and the events that take place in it are something I am momentarily awoken too- like they are occurring on an entirely different plane and I'm stopping my flow to momentarily to observe and act on them. This is what this song makes me think about.

And it starts to make me a bit sad that I'm not truly appreciating the people around me. They just come and go in my consciousness.
