The Wallflowers – One Headlight Lyrics 4 years ago
This song could have been called a junkie's regret. Could be autobiographical or pure fiction.

He lost his innocence to heroin. He talks Cinderella, a young girl too beautiful to be hanging around the like of him, into trying a little heroin herself. Life is short and doesn't last forever so get away from your middle class existence by getting high with me. This works out great for him. He gets the beautiful girl to share his lifestyle of addiction and to take away his loneliness. One headlight is the third eye. By both doing heroin they will gain access to this new way of living life on a higher spiritual plane.

The first few lines of the song are not referring to her but to him. He can't even remember when he started doing heroin it's been so long. The friend is his innocence; his good self that he could trust.

Her independence day was the first time she shot up. She finally felt free of all her problems in life and all the negativity of others around her. She runs with (keeps doing) heroin until she becomes hooked, feels miserable and jumps from her window to stop the pain.

He repeats the hook to show he realizes he's the reason she started in the first place. Maybe if he hadn't talked her into trying it she would still be alive.

The last verse shows he hasn't changed. He's still doing heroin but now it doesn't get him high "the engine doesn't turn." He's still miserable, still lonely and now realizes his addiction killed the person who loved him and might have saved him from himself.

Squeeze – Goodbye Girl Lyrics 4 years ago
@[jimskiski:32634] The room is on the second floor. Her number on the door means she is number two with his wife being number one. This goes back to the line she looks like the kind who'd understand. He is famous and wants to cheat on his wife but needs a girl who will get this and not mind being second fiddle. Most of all, she needs to keep his secret.

The Doobie Brothers – What A Fool Believes Lyrics 4 years ago
Pretty interesting how the lyrics for this song are always printed one way and sung another. Every printed version says:
"But what a fool believes he sees,
No wise man has the power to reason away."
This makes no sense. The words he sings make much better sense:
"But what a fool believes he sees,
The wise man has the power to reason away."
Changing "no" to "the" makes all the difference in the meaning. The fool wants her to love him so he sees things that aren't there. This is what makes him a fool. But the wise man knows better. He has experience and can see through her deception and lies. If no wise man knew better then every guy would be clueless.
