I see many comments that this song is about drugs, but curiously, I never saw it that way. If anyone from the band says that is what the song is about, that's fine, its their song, But for me, it is the quintessential heavy metal tune, about the complete lack of control we have over our lives, the sense of being controlled by powers beyond our reach. And musically a great song. |

From the first time I heard this song, it struck me as a prayer for someone who has lost the love of their life. Musically it is very powerful. Personnaly, it is a song of hope, that eventually, the pain of the loss will fade, and the rich memories of life will remain. |

A good song with a killer guitar solo on the Yessongs album.
My wife and I always interpreted this song to mean that the soldier bears no disgrace, that the dishonor belongs to those that give the orders and, as so often happens, are happy sending others' children to fight. That's fine as far as it goes, but I am troubled by the logical conclusion that "just following orders" is acceptable. |

My wife and I went to the movie "Yessongs" on our first date, Oct 24, 1975. She was not into Yes, I certainly was. But from that movie, this is the only song she remembered. It was magical.
We just celebrated our 40th anniversary. |
