Mark Knopfler – So Far From the Clyde Lyrics 3 months ago
I'm astounded by Knopfler's skill, not only in telling a story but his choice of words to convey the mood. All the images of death: "the last supper, the hangman, the bones, the carcass" all evoke not only death but an execution. Which it is, of a once-proud ship put together with revered craftmanship halfway around the world. It is beautiful and melancholy.

James Taylor – You Can Close Your Eyes Lyrics 3 months ago
I have always thought this is a song to a child from a divorced father, or anyway a father who is no longer with the mother. "No one's gonna take this time away" sounds like an assurance that the other parent cannot interfere with their time together.

"You can sing this song when I'm gone"

so the child will be thinking of the father when they are not together

Dire Straits – Tunnel Of Love Lyrics 2 years ago
Am I the only one who was struck by the line "Big wheel keep on turnin" identical to the line in "Proud Mary"? MK has a gift for alluding to atmospheric hints, like "A Place for Us" in "Romeo and Juliet" which referred to "West Side Story" which itself was a version of Romeo and Juliet. He doesn't quite spell it out he's too subtle to do that, but just scatters these literary gems around for his fans to find, or not.

Mark Knopfler – Boom, Like That Lyrics 3 years ago
Listened to this song a bunch of times, while fixing up a ratty apartment, humming along, singing along with a few phrases, but never paid close attention to the lyrics. One night I tapped the "lyrics" icon and was amazed when it dawned on me, finally, that it was the McDonald's story. Mark Knopfler astounds me with his musicality blended with his literacy. And his voice with that throwaway casual style like he doesn't care if you "get it" or not. What a talent! It's always rewarding to "listen hard" to Mark Knopfler.

James Taylor – You Can Close Your Eyes Lyrics 4 years ago
First time I heard it, I thought it was sung to an ex-lover that the singer still cares for. Later I thought it was a lullaby sung to a child from a divorced father. Both interpretations make sense to me. But it is hauntingly beautiful and tender, assuring someone the singer will watch over him/her and make sure everything will be ok.

Neil Young – Tell Me Why Lyrics 6 years ago
I always heard: "when you're young enough to repaint but old enough to sell"
at the time I was rehabbing houses as a sideline, and it seemed to me about the energy and effort of working for something, in youth, versus the cashing in when you have achieved your goal. I thought it was a great line and that's not what he wrote!
