Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Just A Song Before I Go Lyrics 5 months ago
It was on a $500 bet between Graham Nash and his friend / drug dealer in Hawaii that he couldn’t write a song in the 30 minutes they had to kill before heading to the airport to catch a flight back to LA. Nash wrote it, collected his $500 which he says he still has in his possession. “Just a song before I go … a lesson to be learned (for his drug dealer friend who had just challenged him to write a song) “traveling twice the speed of sound, it’s easy to get burned” (because Nashvwas now headed to the airport and his challenger buddy just lost the bet!.)

Paul Simon – Still Crazy After All These Years Lyrics 1 year ago
Paul wrote the first two verses on guitar and sang the unfinished version on the Dick Cavett Show (YouTube.) Paul later gave an interview about this song and said he most always has a personal experience that he’s writing about that stimulates a song, but the entire song isn’t necessarily based on experiences.
I think he is singing about meeting his old lover and realizing she’s still crazy after all these years.
And then he sings about himself and acknowledges that he’s still crazy after all these years. Then he reflects on his life and his depression, as he sits by his NY apt window and looks down at the cars, and fears he will do some damage one day if he jumps.
And then sings he’s still crazy after all these years.
It’s a crazy life we live.

Steely Dan – Lunch With Gina Lyrics 1 year ago
Lunch with Gina…is forever, because this is a classic SD song about drug withdrawal, and the formidable symptoms following him everywhere he goes until he finally gets a hit. Nailed to the floor in the no-option zone.
Gina, is a slang term for a drug.
Sex Drugs Rock n Roll.

Steely Dan – Two Against Nature Lyrics 1 year ago
@[WheelyDan:44182] I’ll offer this as an opinion. Walter Becker was a known addict, as I’m sure you know a lot of their history. I think he is describing a stint in rehab here, because the Two Against Nature LP was written during a short period after Walter had come out of rehab and was clean.
For this masterpiece song, I offer that Room 18-A is a room number in a rehab clinic. Missy’s hallucinating from withdrawal. Her Kitty's turned inside out, she say.
Spider King Demon threw a wicker chair across the lobby in anger. People are angry in withdrawal and demand the doctors give them medication.
All the nice people, goodly souls, quaking in their respective hidey holes —-rooms in rehab as they go through withdrawal.
Call your doctor. Call your shrink. Not a one of them left to hear you scream. The doctors leave for the day and the patients are screaming for some medicine for relief. Rehab is hell. It just is terrible.
Then he describes the other people and the hallucinations and wild methods they have tried to get rid of drugs.
Most notable is the fascinating riff throughout the song in the background that Fagen masterfully created that puts into the music the actual feeling in the brain in withdrawal. I’ve withdrawn from a drug and this is exactly what it feels like …if you listen carefully, it’s a da, da, da, DAT Piano riff that randomly plays. Stoke of genius. I love Fagen and Becker. Masters of music. My two cents.

@[SteelyDeb:43176] Picture a drug rehab facility. All of the patients are going through withdrawal, hallucinations, pain, anger, screaming. Walter and Donald are describing what they saw. “Bad news breaking in (room 18-A) Missy’s kitty turned inside out, you say.”(she’s hallucinating)
“Spider king demon, and that whole crew. Across the lobby the wicker wing chair flew.” (Patients in detox are angry)
“All the nice people, those goodly souls, Quaking in their respective hidey holes (rehab patients detoxing in their rooms)
“Everyone’s wasted in this gruesome dream”(detoxing / withdrawal)
“Not a one of them left to hear you scream.” (The doctors go home at 5pm )

Steely Dan – Black Cow Lyrics 1 year ago
There is an interview of Becker and Fagen actually talking about BLACK COW. Fagen, with his usual wry wit is sitting there looking directly at Becker, pointing to himself and saying “ IM THE ONE!!…WHO MUST MAKE EVERYTHING RIGHT!!! TALK IT OUT!! TILL DAYLIGHT!!” and they laugh.
**Becker did not play or sing on Black Cow. Another clue that this song was written by Fagen about Walter’s heroin addiction. (They were best friends but that heroin addiction.)

The Doobie Brothers – Another Park, Another Sunday Lyrics 1 year ago
Tom Johnston said in an interview it was a song about a personal break up with his girlfriend.
This song was released as the first single off of their album, but radio stations stopped playing it because of the line : “and the radio just seems to bring me down.” Miraculously, the DJs flipped it over and started playing the B side with a tune called “Black Water” (which was on the B side because the record company didn’t think it was a hit. On its own without promotion, the song shot to number 1 on US Billboard to become the first number one record for The Doobie Brothers and for Patrick Simmons who wrote the guitar riff between music sessions, and one of only two songs to go to number one after being released as a B side record! Wow!!! What unique history!!

Eagles – Tequila Sunrise Lyrics 1 year ago
Tequila Sunrise is a song about Waking up with a hangover…and regrets for his sorry self about what just happened. Said ‘goodbye’ to the woman he just slept with —who was his friend’s girlfriend. And he reflects the rest of the song.
He, his friend, was just a hired ranch hand, a good guy working on his dreams. Friend’s woman was out runnin round cheating in the bar where the singer sees her.. She wasn’t just ‘another woman’. She was the girlfriend of his friend and known to him.

Singer takes a shot of tequila courage and sleeps with her anyway.

It’s a hollow feeling when it comes down to dealing friends…the guilt never ends.
It’s another Tequila Sunrise. This old world still looks the same…another frame (but funny thing is…when Glenn sings this word…it sounds like he’s singing “friend” as if to sing “another friend” that he screwed over…literally.)

Kenny Loggins – The Real Thing Lyrics 2 years ago
I think the lyrics are misquoted here. “The woman screamed and cried at me” should read “Go on and scream and cry at me.” \n(Other lyrics apps show the correct wording.) \nFYI : Amanda goes by Isabella and was 16 / 17 years old when her dad divorced her mom.

Steely Dan – Two Against Nature Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is about Becker and Fagen’s stint in rehab. A day in the life of drug rehab. He’s describing the patients who were there with them as they all tried to detox. “Beautiful housewife in deep distress. Especially you deserve the very best…” (as if she’s any better than the rest of them. Eye rolls here.)
**The most brilliant part of this song though, is the constant ‘da-da-da—dat’ riff in the background music. (Listen carefully for it throughout the song) . Fagen literally re-creates for you that constant feeling in the brain when it goes through withdrawal. It’s random but ever-present. Love SteelyDan

“Down to Greene Street. There you go. looking so outrageous. And they tell you so.”

Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics 2 years ago
GO READ YOUR STEELY DAN HISTORY. Gaucho is about Walter Becker’s heroin habit, and is written by Donald Fagen describing to his buddy Becker how tough it has been recording an LP with heavy roller session musicians laughing at Becker showing up high, sleeping on the floor, snapping his fingers like a fool, and having glassy eyes that matched the glass buttons on his Jean jacket for Gods sake while wearing his elevator shoes that Fagen poked fun about.
Steely Dan broke up for a long time after Gaucho was recorded as evidence. The song Black Cow on Aja LP is also written to Becker from Fagen about his drug habit. “Down to Greene Street. There you go. (where their recording studio was located…) Looking so outrageous. And they tell you so.”
They were lifelong friends, incredible musicians, but drugs got in the way. Read their history. It’s there. The song Two Against Nature is about their stint in rehab. It’s describing a rehab hospital and the patients they got to know while there. The song “Lunch With Gina” is about drugs and withdrawal. “Every time I walk out she’s right in my face…” Many of Fagen’s songs are about drugs. Time Out Of Mind.

The song Black Cow is about Walter Becker’s drug habit, and Fagen wrote the song to his friend, Becker. It’s widely known that Fagan and Becker brought in expensive session musicians for meticulous creative jams on their LPs. Becker would show up stoned, and Fagen would try to make things right. The song Gaucho is also written about Becker by Donald Fagen. “Just when I say boy we can’t miss. You are golden. Then you do this.” (Becker showed up stoned while they were paying “heavy roller session musicians.”) Who is the gaucho? It’s Walter Becker on heroin, of course. (“Just as your ‘friend’’ will never be welcome here, high (on drugs) in the Custerdome (the building that housed their recording studios.)

He also wrote “She’s Always A Woman” about Elizabeth Weber. The key phrases “She can kill with a smile. She can wound with her eyes. And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies.”
