| I've posted on other songs which I think are easier to decipher than this one, however I will say this, I believe this song is about the JG Ballard Book "Crash". The book for those who don't know is about people who become turned by car crashes, with the ultimate experience for the main character being to die in a head-on collision with Liz Taylor. Glenn was a fan of the book and later would write the song Kiss of Steel about it. Taking into consideration the Hybrid Mark II was the name of the standard test dummy used in car crashes starting in the early 70's, and by 1973 the only dummy used by the highway safety commission, You can look at it from that angle, a hybrid moment is 1.) the moment you become a rag-doll in the thrall of a car crash and 2.) the moment you become something more than human, melded with a machine, a hybrid. This is the moment the man gets his wish of dying with the onject of his affection. He sees the terror in her eyes for just one moment. The ultimate moment and then it's gone. This may seem like a wacky view of the song but when you consider Nike A Go Go Glenn likes playing with his themes. | |

Wrens are timid birds in the quote, hunting in a place where Eagles (birds of prey) are scared to hunt. The song tells the story of a dangerous street where average men go to temp fate and meet prostitutes. It is presented in a "fly on the wall style" by someone just passing through to see the sights on an adventure. To go where "Eagles Dare". Glenn Danzig was a bit of a poet when it came to his early lyrics. He likes to paint a picture with his words rather than tell a story. He sets a mood, or attempts to put you in the shoes of a character. Cough/Cool is about a town terrorized by a vampire told from the perspective of the vampire. This street we walk upon This corner full of piss and fear (Piss and fear two things predators can smell) This street won't bear it long (Bear fruit) It slants, it tilts, it's brought outside Alive (A drunkard is thrown into the street, ALIVE PREY) Cover your face when you walk by Drench your visions in darkness (Vampires like Dracula pull their capes over their faces to hide from light or crosses) Spit up blood when you cough Cool, cool, cool Cough, cool, cool, cool (The bite causes you to cough BLOOD) We dine on visions with new eyes Creep, creep, creep, creep (Stalking dinner with your eyes) We cut our visions with two eyes Cool, cool, cool, cool (Double meaning of eyes, as in "eye teeth" or fangs) This street we walk upon This corner full of fear This street we walk upon This corner full of piss and fear (And once it's done the streets go back to normal) |
