But what is the song about? Very, very few people have ever been able to see the tale that Ronnie was weaving...he's going to Alabama to get his woman...a woman of colour...thus, coming from Mississippi he knew full well that there would be lots of looks and perhaps something more in 'Bama... The song is chalk full of powerful messages by Van Zant set to a relatively simple Southern Blues. He was writing about Freedom, the freedom to Love whatever he wants to, regardless of race, creed or colour...he was writing about empowering the self by answering to his own "laws"/beliefs, and not some corrupt Government/Religion/Society. He was writing about cause and effect...he wasn't going to 'Bama to cause trouble, but if trouble came to his doorstep, he was prepared to respond...which is a POWERFUL message for all of us...we should never go looking for a fight, but if one comes to our own doorstep, that's when we take care of business...and the corruption of this sick societal world has finally brought their sickness to all our doorsteps, and it's time to fight for what is right, and for our Freedom! People drink excessively to forget...forget the pain and suffering that they simply won't let go of...and that is a prison that the "ole poison whiskey" is not the cause...again, merely the symptom. Good interpretations, thank you...however, his message is even deeper than simply avoiding the past, which is always gone...what he is specifically referring to is the fact that all there ever is, is the NOW...the past and future simply CANNOT exist, they are merely the illusion that keeps the Maya afloat (our physical world). Modern Human society has built upon Lies, Greed, violence and control...these are all the trademarks of Fear, the antithesis of Love. The only possible answer to our current society is LOVE, which would lead us to Equality, sharing, tolerance, understanding, resolutions and Peace...this change must occur within each part of our society...this is what Peart is saying...from politicians to tradesmen, we must exist and operate around others through the vibration of Love...if we do, this current "reality" will change 180 degrees...if we don't, society will eventually hit bottom in some cataclysm where change will be forced upon us... Brilliant analysis Doug, but it's not simply about "Mother Nature"...there's more to it than that. This is why John Kay was such a master songwriter...the song had layers. Upon its simplest layer it's about a young, naive girl entering into the world of men and looking for at least "one good man" to step forward out of the bunch and guide her with Love and respect. However, there's also your much larger layer that references Mother Nature in her infancy with mankind. But ultimately, the song is at an even deeper level...and that is the SACRED FEMININE. The Earth, and many of man's most ancient realms were guided thru the wisdom of the sacred feminine (Ancient Egypt and Atlantis, if you are prepared to believe this truth). But after the great flood (approx. 10,000 years ago) the Male energy has slowly taken full control of this wondrous Earth to her full detriment. First, to clarify, while Morrison "did drugs", Jim was taking mostly natural hallucinogens to continue his journey of expanding his Consciousness...he wasn't some little gremlin consuming everything in sight as the media portrayed him. The authorities were following Morrison ceaselessly trying to catch him on a narcotics charge, and eventually he gave "in" to this pressure and began drinking alcohol instead. It was then that you began seeing him doing seemingly meaningless acts of mischief. As I mentioned in my review of Moonlight Drive, Morrison believed that our true identity was our Consciousness, and that our physical experience was part of the Maya, or the Illusion. Thus, the song "People Are Strange" was simply explaining to us that we are ruled by our personal BELIEFS, which dominate our thoughts. This is precisely why Jim kept the lyrics very, very straightforward and simple. If we are embracing negative emotions and feeling "down", then that is our reality. Thus, people ARE strange when you are a stranger, faces DO look ugly when you're alone, women ARE wicked when you're unwanted...all because the Universe gives us whatever we ask for in every single moment. So, when we feel disconnected from others, they are indeed strangers. Morrison was simply explaining the cause/effect nature of our Universal experience. And all of us know the flip-side to these melancholic moments...when we are flying high we can do no wrong...women are all so beautiful as everyone wants to be our friend. Thus, as Jimbo liked to say, Life is merely a choice in every moment between Love or Fear...and the consequences that went with this choice. |

To understand this brilliant song, you first have to understand Jim Morrison...because to be able to make much sense of his brilliant & suggestive lyrics you need to comprehend the concept of the INFINITE. Now, I realize that for most people in the Western world this word sounds "out there", odd, perhaps even outlandish...but I assure you it isn't. We are, simply put, whatever we believe in...and since we come into this world knowing (or more accurately, REMEMBERING) virtually nothing, our beliefs are determined by our Parents, relatives, schools, government, television, movies, etc. In general, for MOST people in the Western world, we are the products of SOCIETY...and that's NOT a good thing. Society is OWNED and RUN by what are called the ruling elites...the secret owners of all the Corporations that dominate every single aspect of humanity, including religion. Now, how can a few families dominate seven billion people? There's only one way...to convert society into the STATUS QUO. Everything (and I literally mean EVERYTHING) in this Universe is constant change. The ONLY thing that bucks this reality is human society. So why is that? Because the only way that a handful can rule the many is by creating and then controlling a never-changing narrative. Who knows how old the Universe is? We are told that our Earth is at least 4.5 billion years old. The average human being on Earth now only lives to an average age of 60. Against the backdrop of BILLIONS of years, that number doesn't even register on the largest of graphs. Thus, in this narrative, we are a BLIP of reality. So, if that is true, then WHY for God's sake are the majority of the people on this planet working at JOBS??? Low-paying, unchallenging, unfulfilling, monotonous jobs for 40+ years??? If this isn't the ultimate definition of insanity, then I don't know what is. By creating a society that lashes out at and ridicules alternative ideas and broad, sweeping changes, the ruling elites have brainwashed us into becoming our own police force...constantly patrolling our own minds with a club made out of Fear, that is designed to squash us from saying or doing anything that will "draw attention to ourselves", or get us into trouble with authority figures and/or bullies. We have become the character "Evie" from the Novel/movie, V for Vendetta. Governments don't need to create massive surveillance systems to monitor our thoughts and words, we do it ourselves for Free and for THEIR BENEFIT! Jim Morrison KNEW this reality...he lived it growing up in a Military family with a Father who sold his soul to advance within the status quo. Thus, growing up, Morrison's DIVERGENCE butted heads with his Father's need for CONFORMITY. It was a battle that could not be won by his Father, and thus, Morrison left his family, severed all ties, and literally considered them as strangers, aliens. Morrison possessed a spirit that needed to live in TRUTH. Sadly, like in the wonderful movie, Divergents only comprise a small % of the population, with most humans content to live like Sheeple. Thus, Morrison began to educate himself...he cast out of his mind all the absolute BULLSHIT and outright lies that we are taught by our Parents and our schools. He discovered Eastern Philosophies, the ancient Sanskrit texts, the writings of Lao Tzu, Confucius, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda...great, truthful writers like Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Poe, Twain, Wilde, Hesse, Joyce, Kafka, Orwell, Rand...even Quantum Physicists like Max Planck and Einstein. Morrison OPENED his mind up to the concept of the Infinite...the idea that we are all actually NON-PHYSICAL beings of eternal energy, experiencing ourselves in a 3-Dimensional, Holographic Universe...where things like Matter and Linear Time were nothing more than mere abstractions...necessary beliefs to give us the sense, or ILLUSION, that we were "solid", 3-D beings living in a construct outside of the Unified Field. Thus, these ideas became Morrison's "set of beliefs", the construct from which he operated his decision-making. THIS IS WHY JIM MORRISON wrote the things he did and behaved the way he did...he knew the truth that we EXIST, and thus, we can never NOT exist. That our experience here "on Earth" is just part of the great game...the Samsara...the great re-birth of all living things. Most people belief in a reality where we are born, we live and then we die...and that's it. If you want to believe in this, that's fine, but it simply isn't true. All life is part of the great cycle, which is birth, life, death and re-birth...a reality where FEAR is merely an illusion as we can NEVER "end", get it "wrong" or commit "bad"/"immoral" acts. Again, Morrison believed that we are all merely beings of Light experiencing ourselves within this holographic, illusive reality. That our THOUGHTS created our reality...this is why he pushed his personal boundaries as far as he could, and this is why he wrote songs like, Moonlight Drive. So why were the first two lines of the song, "Let's swim to the moon, uh huh Let's climb through the tide"??? Because Morrison KNEW that we are actually beings of light in the two-dimensional Unified Field. Our 3-D Universe/Earth is the Illusion, the Maya. Thus, through our thoughts we can "swim to the moon, or climb through a tide". This wasn't merely abstract poetry, Morrison was educating us to his personal beliefs...his truth. "Penetrate the evenin' that the City sleeps to hide"...here, Morrison was suggesting to us that the Sheeple (the huddled masses of the Cities) had been taught to see the night as darkness...as the unknown...thus, an agent of Fear that needed to be "penetrated" (an act of violence) rather than loved or embraced. People slept at night to hide from the darkness (the unknown), rather than seeing it's infinite beauty. As Joe Rogan says, "people drive thousands of miles just to look down and see the Grand Canyon, instead of staying at home and looking up at the sky. In comparison to the brilliant Stars in the ever-expanding Cosmos, what's the Grand Canyon but a ditch in the ground?" Again, the ruling elites teach us NOT to wonder about the unknown and speculate, not to look up and hope, but rather to look down and despair. Thus, what was Morrison's retort to society's construct of limitation??? What is the Unified Field? An endless river within the Cosmos, where waves of infinite possibilities exist just so that we can play with them. When we "let go" to the wonder and lure of all the waiting worlds (read Realities), we are choosing to step into this Cosmic river of infinite possibilities and out of the limitations of our illusory 5 senses where "nothing is left open and there's no time to decide". Again, which reality would you prefer? One where you are "mortal" and constantly being driven by the construct of Linear Time (tick, tick, tick), or one where you are eternal, capable of going anywhere, in any moment, with no limitations because LINEAR TIME CANNOT EXIST when matter simply pops in and out of existence based solely upon whether we are focusing upon it or not??? And finally with his last verse... "You reach your hand to hold me But I can't be your guide Easy, I love you As I watch you glide Falling through wet forests On our moonlight drive" This is all about FREE WILL. Morrison can suggest to us to explore our inner minds, but he can't do it for us, he can't "be our guide"...WE must do it for ourselves. This is precisely why no Alien race, or subterranean culture is going to come to our rescue on this Earth and magically "fix" everything for us. WE must do it ourselves. He loves us, and will lovingly watch us as we individually try to "glide", (fly) freely, for the first time, but again, we must do this for ourselves. The song is Donovan's analysis of the human condition always seeking help from without, instead of within. Analysis as a means to self-healing; however, the only analysis where enlightenment is achieved is discovered by looking within yourself...not in some carney's tent w/ Clara the Clairvoyant...not in the office of some professional analyst charging $200 an hour (all the while thinking about the Woody Allen movie he watched the night before)...not in a confessional where the Priest gets his kicks from hearing all about your "perversions"...and not in some ashram w/ a Psychedelic Yogi thinking about his own "claim to fame". Rocky Rockin'Roller is none other than John Lennon, and the last verse is referring to Lennon's song, Rocky Raccoon, from the White Album. After his trip to see the Maharishi, Lennon was in personal turmoil...he had met Yoko and part of himself was swelling w/ excitement and joy, while another part of him was massively struggling w/ Fear and his own Ego. The words of the Maharishi were direct and simple and Lennon did not like than some "weird" guy in long, flowing robes possessive of simple, powerful truth was being treated like royalty by the rest of the world. Lennon could not separate the words of the Maharishi from the Maharishi. These words weren't human in origin, but divine. Years later, Lennon would come to realize the truth and brilliance in those words from India, but he simply wasn't ready at that time. Hence, Donovan refers to Lennon as "sometimes up and sometimes down", quite accurately so. At that time, Lennon would have "given everything he had for a little peace of mind". His songs on the White Album were brilliant, but they were written under the vibration of annoyance, frustration and thus Fear. Donovan could see that Lennon was in between "lost beliefs and gross fear", struggling w/ what he had in that moment ("not quite nothing and not quite all"). And what was bugging Lennon the most was this little Holy man from India, with a weird, high-pitched voice, telling Lennon that he already knew the answers to all his own problems, inside of himself. That he needed to let go of the "out there" and only embrace what was within himself through Meditation and deep reflection. To Lennon, at the time, this seemed more of a riddle than an answer, and thus his Ego attacked at what he perceived to be the Maharishi's "shortcomings" (just listen to the song, Rocky Raccoon)...thus, Donovan created the line, "Psychedelic Yogi is not a very groovy, groovy guru as the song's outro...to reflect Lennon's beliefs at the time. The theme of Donovan's entire album, Open Road, was taking personal responsibility of the self by going within and rejecting society and their status quo (Riki Tiki Tavi, et al). John Lennon was in transition as this point in his life, and Donovan was merely offering him (and ALL OF US) this simple, but CRUCIAL advice...find all of your answers and truth by going within, and rejecting the white noise of the "out there"! It's about Marriage and Weddings and all that STUPID STUFF. The song focuses upon the ridiculous traditions that are organized Society. You meet someone, (one out of 7 BILLION on the planet), fall in Love and then "take the plunge". WTF? Why? So many human beings are simply not designed to be in long lasting relationships, or to even have children, so why try? Why? Because WE HAVE BEEN TOLD TO...that this is "the way" that all "normal" people live their lives, when it's NOT! Examine the song's title...what is a Cha Cha? A Cuban dance step where the name is an Onomatopoeia, derived from the sound of the dancer's shoes. What is Loco? A Spanish word for crazy. So what is Jackson telling us in the song title alone? That Marriage is a random, fast-paced, crazed institution that most people don't fully understand and find themselves forced into, and then spend a lifetime trying to "dance all night, while never getting the steps quite right". And so for most married participants, especially women, it's a question of not "biting the hand that feeds" so that you don't find yourself (heaven help me for even saying it) a divorcee...God forgive everyone for that mortal sin that sees most people (again, especially women) as PERCEIVED as "damaged goods". Marriage, like most everything else found within Society's most cherished structures, is a CON! Guaranteed to create DIS-EASE amongst the participants, especially children, because we are neither prepared nor "hard-wired" for this monogamous marathon. Being with just one person isn't wrong in any way, shape or form; however, it's likely that most people would benefit from a lifetime of many different meaningful relationships, some Cha-Chas, Salsas, slow dances and even "line" dances... The song was certainly built around his recent "memory" of Holly Vincent, but the deeper meaning to the song was the narrative that Hollywood and Century City (the Movie and Music industries) are run by the Illuminati...a group FAR MORE RUTHLESS than the 2-bit hustlers, cheap talents like Holly Vincent. They SWALLOW UP EVERYTHING in their path...the Good, the Bad, the Babylon Sisters... The first verse relates to ANY of these Babylon whores who sell their souls in a back room deal with the Devil (or in this case, Devil Worshippers). And in this world, it never just rains, it always comes pouring down...either with fabulous success or with fabulous disasters (just look at any of them). The 2nd verse explained how dear, sweet, not-so-innocent Holly got to this world...she ran out of "suckers" like Mark Knopfler who would put up their own money and their own connections to advance her career out of mis-placed Love. Only to find out that when their money dried up, so did her "love". Thus, she made the deal with the Vampires of Century City (Profiteers), and in their world, they don't play within the boundaries of the law, they'll take everything off of your "merry-go-round", including your head. The 3rd verse likely referred to the "new crowd" that she was hanging with within this owned and twisted culture...they were in longer and deeper than her, thus, they were even "faster" and more vile...using up everything that came into their pathway...leaving all sorts of "stains" and tears on the newbie "clowns" on their way out of town. The 4th verse is where the song gets much, much more intense both musically and lyrically. Knopfler is describing a real or imagined visit with Holly in LA where the realities of her world (a small cell with bars) were becoming more and more obvious to her; thus, she was "busy trying to clear her name" by BLAMING everyone else for their "failed love", which was typical for her character. All the while, the walls of her bower were further closing in. This verse segued musically into one last lighter "side show" before Knopfler's EPIC final verse. Here, he described her reality where the people that she was using in LA were having to come to her for help...not a great setup...and this segue helped to paint the final picture of Holly...desperate and ready to get her "just rewards" from those in Century City that she could NEVER REPAY... The final verse saw Knopfler laying out the harsh and COLD reality for those who play with the devil and then don't produce..."you know what they say about beggars baby, you don't get to complain about the rules". Knopfler then took the next 4 lines to remind us that all these "star-seekers" create their own realities thru their actions...she wasn't an innocent, she was culpable for what was coming. And whether you sell your soul in Hollywood, Century City, Silicone City, or in NY on Tin Pan Alley, you get the SAME TREATMENT BY THOSE WHO OWN OUR SOCIETY...you will be "raped" again and again by this system whose demands never end...just ask Mark Zuckerberg and the gang at Facebook...as they lie and lie and lie to their "valued customers" while having the "big dick" of the CIA rammed up their backside. And just how timely is this song by Knopfler? Look no further than to yesterday when CON-YA West finally broke down and spilled the beans about the world that he and we live within...one built upon FEAR and LIES...the Illusion! This is why Knopfler named the album, LOVE OVER GOLD, because the ONLY answer for us ever conquering the ruling elites is through the vibration of LOVE. If you are going to attempt to understand the storytelling of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, then you must start with an Open Mind. NEVER, not once, did they ever construct a song with a monolithic meaning (even the one-chord song, Show Biz Kids, which savagely attacked the elites). As in all of their songs, they wrote purposefully opened-ended structures (both lyrically and musically) to allow for endless speculation. And this wasn't a songwriter's device by these two geniuses to protect their personal privacy; rather, both men agreed that they did NOT want to "burden" the world with their "baggage". Thus, Steely Dan songs are the absolute best representations of music sans JUDGMENT...something that this world of ours is in desperate need of today. This also makes their music simultaneously the most MISUNDERSTOOD of all time as well. So many just like to see Becker and Fagen as lazy...constantly falling back upon Sarcasm, time and again, to write all these songs "tongue-in-cheek". They're not...neither the Universe nor Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are so lazy that they "slum it" with coincidence or sarcasm. EVERYTHING is MINUTELY thought-out in each of their songs...everything! Nothing is just "left to chance" on these records. The Protagonist in Bodhisattva is NOT just one person and is not merely a representation of the mindlessness of American urban society looking for a quick fix. Again, there's that element to the song, but there is also a WHOLE LOT more that brought this victim of a non-spiritual society to the doorstep of Japan and China looking for answers in his life. We have been TRAINED since birth to become "Philadelphia Lawyers", capable of talking about any subject but firmly understanding nothing. Thus, Steely Dan songs are the most SUBVERSIVE, anti-societal creations ever because they speak Truth in an organized system that rules through constant lying. The truth that no one is good, bad or evil, just misunderstood. That nothing is ultimately right or wrong, just an experience. That one man's truth is merely the product of his upbringing...and largely just speculation from some guy in either a suit and tie or a "long-flowing robe". So, if you want to get past an interpretation of their songs, like this one, that men are misogynistic, women are flakes looking to be distracted before they "put out", and that something like FM radio is "the answer", then you must open your mind to the infinite and restrain from making judgments! LISTEN to the words LITERALLY against the backdrop of the music in that precise moment...then you can begin to understand their deeper meanings embedded in each song. FM is NOT just a simple, cut-and-dried, single about the sad state of American radio; however, it IS a simple, cut-and-dried single about the sad state of American radio. With Steely Dan songs you are rarely "wrong" with your interpretation because they purposefully construct them so open-ended. This is the GIFT of Steely Dan's music...that whatever the level of your awakening or understanding, you could find your own truth in the songs. Charlie Freak could be a down on his luck bum, constantly being exploited by the system just so he could get high and escape; or he was an incarnation of Christ, providing man-kind opportunities for personal growth outside of our "greed is good" capitalist society. When you take the time to listen to FM's lyrics IN CONJUNCTION with the music, you begin to see that society is constantly being DISTRACTED by all the White Noise. Just listen to all the "effects" in the song's introduction. Even Fagen's piano melody is off-kilter...Becker's guitar is all bottled up, exploding in random moments with tight groupings of notes. In the background, bubbling, gurgling just under the surface of the song are odd, unsettling noises...all of these things suddenly disappear when a sound marker is played as the song's first verse begins. Is this marker a representation of Pavlov's auditory studies??? A TV theme song, a commercial jingle, a radio station's tag line? Have we been PROGRAMMED by society to become "dumbed-down" whenever we are given these signals like so many animals...the smell of fast-food, the sight of a sports uniform or the hint of pornography??? Remember, no matter what anyone tries to sell you, we are ALL Infinite beings of Consciousness, capable of genius in every moment...now living like farm animals in iron-cast roles that society has already planned for us. Do you gotta have a house, car, College education and stuff??? Then you MUST sink into debt...an illusory reality where you THINK you own all these things freely, only to find out that you don't as soon as you miss two bank payments in a row!!! So after a lesson in life like this one, who wouldn't succumb in depression to "bury the bottle mama" attempting to drown away their sorrows. Except, it's NOT "bury the bottle" as you might think, but rather, "worry the bottle"...tying in PERFECTLY with the unsettling music that opened the song. I won't go into a detailed, line-by-line analysis of the song at this point, but you get the idea...stop trying to read TOO MUCH into their lyrics alone and start thinking of them literally in that precise moment, respectful of the music. "Give us some funked-up Muzak, she treats you nice" is an incredibly revealing line if you take the time to understand what is happening in the song at that moment. Listen to how Fagen sings those particular notes as you attempt to decode the truth that is there. "Funked-up Muzak" seems like an anagram, however, it's not. Look at what those words represent literally...Fagen did NOT sing "Funked-up"...that's a powerful clue. Also, the line is connected powerfully to the two previous lines... "The girls don't seem to care what's on, as long as they play till dawn" "Nothing but blues and Elvis and somebody else's favorite song" "Give us some funked up Muzak, she treats you nice" The first line, "The girls don't..." is sung against the simplest, most-soothing melody in the song...it's calm, relaxing and sounds "right". But with the next line, "Nothing but Blues and Elvis", there is a chord change at the beginning of the bar, a subtle difference in the string arrangement that hints that something is now "wrong" once more. And by the time Fagen sings that 3rd line, he and the music are now both firmly in the realm of Daddy Don't Live in that NYC No More...not sarcastic, just now "worldly-wise" to the tricks being played on his senses!!! Thus, as the chorus rolls into all of it's glory, WE are now hip to the real meaning of "No Static at all"...in other words, there's a TON of static, only we are being told that there's none...and who is always telling us that there's nothing wrong, nothing to see here in this latest scandal...just keep moving along...next please??? This approach is the only way to slowly come to grips with the deeper meanings found in their songs. However, it’s not essential to enjoying Steely Dan…the true genius of Becker and Fagen is that ANYONE can find their own place in the sun with each Steely Dan song…each song sounds good in car, or on the radio…as each song possesses a certain level of “clarity” flowing from verses to choruses, then back again. However, as most of us know, there is another side to each of their songs. Like Hercule Poirot’s two deductions at the end of Murder on the Orient Express, there is a simpler answer (that most of society prefers) and then there’s the deeper, darker answer that scares off those with closed minds. So, while you can listen to Do It Again, again and again on the radio, constantly wondering how the song came to its ending so suddenly, you can also sink deeply into that land of spoiled milk and rancid honey, slowly coming to a realization of how the protagonist got there in the first place…that it’s not so easy to “blame” or “attack” him/her for being mindless and trapped upon the hamster wheel…that there’s a back story to ALL OF US, that leads us to these points in time. And that’s what a Steely Dan song really is, an Objective Snap-shot of a single event in time…and to that end, Steely Dan’s discography is probably the most accurate and honest HISTORY of western civilization that you will ever come across. Why? Because Steely Dan songs don’t have an “axe to grind” with anybody or anything…they simply tell tales of what they choose to focus upon. Are there lots of completely fucked up characters and events in Steely Dan songs? That depends entirely upon YOUR definition of “fucked up”. The bookkeeper’s son who ends up in a stalemate with a Police Swat team may just be logically playing out the circumstances of his life experiences…a necessary ending to a sordid tale…nothing to become morose about, or perhaps everything to become morose about. In a world filled with bullshit and lies, Steely Dan songs stand out upon a sacred alter offering to every listener the opportunity to discover truth. How much or how little depends entirely upon our own level of interest and awareness…which really defines human life upon this perfect planet! |

The song is brilliant, as are the lyrics. In fact, it's one of the best Rock songs ever written. Randy Bachman wrote a Blues, played w/ a Jazz feel & Jazzy fills, to create a sensation of thoughtfulness...the music literally encourages the listener to contemplate the lyrics... The lyrics expressed the concept of DUALITY in the face of dog-eat-dog capitalism and the school of hard knocks (Rock and Roll). Learned the hard way through his days in the Guess Who & BTO, Bachman experienced a music industry filled with Lies, Betrayal, Cut-throat contracts, Pressure, Fickleness, Sex, Drugs...Bachman had seen it all and tried to find Balance and Harmony in his life, including leaving the Guess Who at their peak, marrying a Mormon girl and converting to the religion, only to find that it was as big a scam as everything else in society! The Duality in the lyrics (and hence their brilliance) lay between what one defined as SUCCESS. Fame, Fortune? This was one definition and hence to achieve it you had to look out for #1 by being cut-throat and ruthless. But there's another definition, and that is the ultimate one...Peace and Happiness...to reach this state of mind also required looking out for #1, but not by being ruthless, rather by STICKING TO YOUR IDEALS every step of the way ("success is a ladder take a step at a time"). Being a principled person doesn't mean taking advantage of others, rather, it means not letting others take advantage of you...and in that way "looking out for #1" works not only for the self, but for society...hence his lyrics at the end of the song... "Is looking out for number one I mean you Keep looking out for number one And that's us Keep looking out for number one That's me I'm looking out for number one" "You...us...me" we all win by looking out for #1 b/c we remove a world of VICTIMS and replace it with a world of Happiness...and how do victims respond to one another? Distrust, Separation, Suspicion & Doubt. How do Happy people interact? Trust, Connection, Friendship & Generosity. Thus, Life is only ever a choice in every moment between Love and Fear. Capitalism is a system of Inequality, thus Fear. So when we value things like Fame and Fortune (illusory & temporary) we encourage a world of DIVISION. However, when we learn to value Peace and Happiness over Greed (Love over Gold), we encourage a world of Connection. We begin to see ourselves as ONE species, together, on this beautiful planet, instead of apart. And this world will come to know Peace and Individual expression, instead of war and conformity to the norm! |

Beware of Darkness is an incredibly important song...Harrison was sharing his learned, intuitive wisdom with us...don't waste your precious 3-D Illusory, physical lives in the 5 senses to money, work, worries, debts, appointments and worthless consumer goods. Just remember that we were created out of LOVE for the sole purpose of LOVING! Linear Time is merely an illusion, it cannot exist when all matter is merely empty space that pops in and out of existence whenever we focus upon it. So, get back to the land...opt out of organized societies and cities...fend for your own needs, and thus define your own wants...not what some Ad or TV show tells you to desire. Discovering who you are and the things that you actually like are recipes for success and happiness, which is the light. Belonging to others (and their systems of belief) will lead you into the darkness. This song is actually the precursor to "The Art of Dying", where Harrison warned us that unless we ascend here in the Maya to a level of Loving everyone and everything in the moment, we are doomed to repeat this cycle (Samsara) as mere victims who continually experience Death... I encourage everyone to re-listen to the entire album and let his words encourage you to research the actual truths behind our existence, which you will NEVER find in a school textbook! So live the now to the fullest of your passions. Good thoughts all around. Like Ferret, the Gaudi album is an APP album that has continued to grow and grow upon me. Some of the songs here (La Sagrada Familia & Higher Ground in particular) are in the upper echelon of this legendary band. As to the meaning of Higher Ground, Obnox did a WONDERFUL job explaining the essence of the song. However, to fully understand it you must connect the dots. This album is a tribute to the GENIUS of Antonio Gaudi. The only modern architect/engineer who was designing and building through SACRED GEOMETERY, which is based in the ultimate truth of humanity, the Golden Mean. Thus, he was NOT LOVED by the ruling elites, the Church, the status quo. Gaudi threatened to revolutionize not only architecture and engineering, but the way mankind approached all problems. Like Nikola Tesla, he was a genius who was firmly controlled and limited by the elites so that their societal offerings (Oil, gas, cement, steel, etc) would continue under their"profit over life" monopolies. Thus, the song is written from the perspective of all those (which is most of us upon this war torn planet today) who KNOW BETTER, who understand that all of society, capitalism is just a rigged game where the rich getter richer by controlling the masses. So what to do? Speak out and get your head bashed in like the other "troublemakers"???
