i always thought the lines "the presence in the pores of the grapefruit rind...will cause you to regress...and fall into a rhythm you can't hack..." is referring to depression or anxiety...peeps on those meds are restricted from consuming grapefruit and could get very sick...just an adjunct thought to the rest of the subject matter...

the question marks were unintended, as i was trying to put a heart at the end there, but it didn't translate...oh well...

the theme of wanting to be "alone" or feeling "loneliness" runs throughout the record...on "trying to be cool", the line "tell me that you want me..." is repeated...as is the line "my loneliness" on "chloroform" and then mars asks rather rhetorically, perhaps even ironically "why would i long for you...?"...and of course, on this track, "i'd rather be alone..."

to echo some of the previous insights from others on here, it does sound like the band was confronting...or at least conveying...a disconnection from their success...or perhaps just not wanting to deal with it, in general...it's not out of the question to say they are making a point to sound like they're being flip and somewhat stereotypically parisian by being annoyed by having the obligations of having a relationship with their fans/audience...maybe it's their way of expressing a sense of humor about where they're at as performers...maybe saying to all of us "ok, we are here...now what...?...more of the same...?!...no thanks...!"

this can be further demonstrated by the amount of time the band took to prepare for the album, as discussed in the accompanying audio liner notes in the deluxe addition...there was a sense to me that they wanted to try and make a perfect record...hence, the reasoning to constantly go over and over the same material at different stages and times...bankrupt! is not a perfect record, but a very strong effort...mars, lyrically, sounds more willing to take a political stand than ever before...the title track, of course, is evidence of that and songs like "bourgeois" and "oblique city" showcase the bands disdain for what was the political climate at the time the record was being constructed...i'll be very interested to see and hear the direction the band goes when, at least commercially, this album wasn't nearly as successful as wolfgang...and maybe that was their point...they rather be alone to do what they want, regardless of their success...we can take them or leave them - they're going to be fine with anything that happens next...
