Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 6 years ago
I heard an interview of Gotye on NPR about a year ago. He says it is done from the perspective of the man as a sad song about lost love. But when the woman speaks, you find out that he is the Unreliable Narrator. He didn't just do this to her, he did it to the woman before her, and probably the woman before that to. That is his addiction to a certain kind of sadness. So he enjoys feeling sorry for himself, and the broken hearts he leave behind is just the price someone else has to pay.

Shooting Star – Last Chance Lyrics 6 years ago
I always thought this song has a vaguely religious theme to it. Dirt poor people look up to the man who came down from the mountain to explain things, about a short life and making it worth while. Who are we talking about? Moses, Buddha, Jesus? Take your pick.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 7 years ago
I was following the...
What do soldiers do? They follow. Who do they follow? The singer doesn't know until he sees the Pack, a troop of soldiers.

all swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
Uniforms. Why does that keep their "little heads" (not so smart, going off to war because it's what the Pack does) from falling in the snow? Not sure, and it may just be a convenient rhyme.

So poor Michael gets shot, "there you go". Michael's blood turns the white snow red. This line always makes me think of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, with all that snow, and all that blood.

Yes – Awaken Lyrics 8 years ago
Like the time I ran away
and turned around
and you were standing close to me

Whenever I hear these lines, I can't help but imagine that it is spoke by a man who's taken all the bad life that he can, so he runs away, only to find that the woman who loves him came with, to support him and love him no matter what.

But as I read the other comments on this song, it appears that Jon had a very religious experience in mind, so replace the woman with God and you've got it. Maybe I can make a hymn out of it.
