@[Kittiemee:7764] Ikr I like to think about it as Elrond and Celebrian when she went to Valinor. I do think it has a deeper meaning when applied to the real world, but in the context of Tolkien's works, you are absolutely right. |

Oh baby I know you've got it bad. I have the same thing. I must have accidentally convinced my parents that I don't like physical contact and now they won't hug me. What I do when I need a hug is I put all of my blankets in my bathtub and just wrap myself up in them. I make believe that I scraped my knee and my parents are picking me up and holding me like they used to. If I could tell you how to get more contact on your life I would, but I can't. I can, however, give you a mental hug, a reminder that you are not alone. Also, if you haven't already, please go see a therapist. They are so so helpful. |

The song in the context of the books and movies is indeed religious, but it isn't Christian. The evening star in the first line refers to Varda, the elvish Queen of the Heavens. This is supported by the Quenya in the refrain. |

I agree with Vishakantha. You guys have it good. Everywhere you look there's a Christian church, and you've got your Jesus. You guys haven't been pursecuted since the old days. I'm a part of the most discriminated against religion in America these days. I can't wear the symbol of my religion without anyone yelling "Illuminati confirmed!" At me. On my most important holiday people paint their faves green and taunt us. While you guys might not be able to have pre marital sex or anything like that, at least people support you. |

I've always felt like the song is about the fall of Erebor. I would think that it is about Thorin's company, but the entire song has a haunting sort of feel, as if it is an echo of the ancient past. I imagine the company walking through the dusty, cobwebbed mountain with a phantom Ed Sheeran singing this song. I like to think of it as Balin praying to Mahal the day the dragon attacked. |

I like to think of the song as Elrond talking to his wife Celebrian before she departs for the grey havens. For those of you who don't know the story, Celebrian was the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. She had three children with Elrond; Twin boys Eledan and Elohir, and a daughter Arwen. Some time after Arwen's hirth, Celebrian decided to visit her parents in Loth Lorien. While traveling over the Misty Mountains, she is captured and tortured by orcs. She was there for a while before her sons came and rescued her. She was taken to Loth Lorien to heal, but she remained psychologically scarred. She could not remain in Middle Earth, and sailed across the sea to Valinor. This song makes me think of Elrond spending one last night with his wife before she leaves him. Much sadder when you know the story. Such a good song. |
