Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart Lyrics 5 years ago
This is a personal take, but to me this song is about a relationship in which one person has depression.

She fell in love before she was depressed, when there was "light in her life" but now she is in the "dark".

"Turn around" suggest to me that her lover is standing right behind her, calling out to her.

Because of the "dark", the depression, she cannot see the person who loves her, even though he is right there, reaching out. She cannot here him calling out, and never answers him, just keep pleading with the "dark". Even though there are people who love her and want to help, her depression isolates her completely.

At the end, she stops even trying to reach out, and falls silent. Her lover sings alone.

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 6 years ago
I agree with the interpretation that this is about the dialogue between a son and his mother as he grows up and starts his own family, and all of that has been said.

However, I think I have a slightly different interpretation of the lines

Mother remember the night that the dog got her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,
And you cried 'til the morning

Since his mother cried 'til the morning, this implies that something went wrong, and either the bitch or the pups died. The music and tone grows especially soft and vulnerable for this verse.

I think that the son and his partner are preparing to have a child at this point in time, and the son is very scared that the birth will go wrong, remembering the time his dog gave birth and how traumatic it was- how 'bloody', and he's seeking reassurance from the mother that that won't happen to his family.

Demi Lovato – Heart Attack Lyrics 9 years ago
This is the story I hear:

It's about a girl who's terrified of changing.

She's actually quite unhappy; when she's honest (every time I try to be myself) , it sounds like she's 'crying for help'. She tries to tell herself that she's fine on her own, that she's okay, but she doesn't feel 'good enough' for a nice person. She's been in a lot of relationships, and she hasn't really cared about any of them, 'I don't care, I can play 'em'. What she did get from these relationships is power/control; she felt like she could control where they were going and what happened in them- and she was quite divorced from them: none of them affected who she was, or changed her at all.

However, she's met a guy whose different; she really cares about his opinion of her(you make me wanna act like a girl, paint my nails and wear high heels). He makes her feel really good; 'you make me glow'.

But, the power he has over her, how strongly he affects her, scares her; she compares how she 'never broke a sweat' and 'never had trouble getting what she wants' from other guys to him; she is 'paralysed' by his presence, and feel 'nervous' and 'never good enough' for him.

I think that she's so scared of where the relationship might go, the power he would have over her, and how it would change her, that she decides it would be 'more trouble than the love is worth'- she'd rather be alone, and unhappy than risk this relationship.

In the end, I think this is kind of a sad song. He sounds like he would be really good for her, but she won't have any of it, so she screws up the only relationship that's ever mattered to her.

Suzanne Vega – Luka Lyrics 9 years ago
This is such a powerful song!

I can hear two narrators, and two different agendas; Luca, an abused child, is trying to cover up his parent/s abuse, and Suzanne Vegas is challenging anyone who ignores abuse, through Luca.

I get this impression because:

The structure of the song; it's addressed at the listener, Luca/Suzanne uses second person, you, so it's like they're talking to you. This makes me think that Suzanne is trying to make people think about the way they react to abuse, whereas Luca is just trying to cover up.

Also, Luca repeatedly asks the listener 'just don't ask', but this could be rephrased as don't just ask- and that's the message Suzanne is giving; don't just ask, do something.

Finally, Luca uses a lot of lame excuses and clichés to explain away his injuries- and Suzanne almost creates a black humour from this, to highlight that everyone knows what is really going on, but ignores it, or tries to cover it up.

Mumford & Sons – Holland Road Lyrics 9 years ago
For me, this is a song about a father-son relationship; and not a good one.
The son is going "home", visiting his father. In the past, they've had rocky time:

"You cut me down,
So I hit low"

Eventually he left home, and became successful, his father could no longer hurt him:

"From the Holland road well I rose and I rose,
and I paid less time, to your callous mind"

Looking back, he finds it in himself to forgive his father:

"I wished you well as you cut me down"

And finally, realises that despite all their problems, he still loves his father, and believes that he is loved also:

"If you believe in me, I'll still believe"
