Pixies – Where Is My Mind? Lyrics 7 years ago
In my opinion, quite possibly the best song of all time. Not sure why, it just takes me somewhere and I enjoy where I am, wherever that may be, when I listen to this track. The vocals, the distorted guitar. Everything about this little number is genius, it all works.

Tom Waits – Kentucky Avenue Lyrics 8 years ago
The greatest love song ever written. I agree with all the comments, not much more to add, the lyrics speak clearly for themselves. There is a great live version on the web. Tom certainly delivers these sentimental songs in such a beautiful way and pulls it off without it being too over the top. Not too many artists I know can do this. Brilliant song from one of his best early albums

Tom Waits – I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You Lyrics 8 years ago
From the album closing time with very nice sounding Waits vocals. I love Tom's voice on every album as it suits the lyrics as does his voice on this very beautiful album. The lyrics are not as complex as later in his career but a great album all the same that regularly gets played in my house. After a Work Xmas party I came home, lit a Cuban cigar and listened to this album, both sides and for the first time in a long time I felt love for a girl from work who was in a relationship with another guy at the time. This song really hit home like never before. She not long after left her guy and I was also recently single. We were both in pretty soul destroying relationships and to cut a long story short we are now together with a 9 month year old gift from God. This song and album will always have a special place in my heart as I really didn't want to fall in love with her as she was taken but it was obviously meant to be and I'm as happy as Iv ever been. Tom- come to Aus again, I'm dying to see u live!!

A tribute to his wife. And going with the theme of album, a man away from his home- reminiscing about his only true love

Tom Waits – Shore Leave Lyrics 8 years ago
Swordfishtrombones seems to have a war theme all the way through and this song is self explanatory. He does a fantastic version on the film big time.

Tom Waits – Underground Lyrics 8 years ago
Agree with wolfticket. Waits at this point moved away from his manager Bones Howe and started a personal and working relationship with his wife Kathleen Brennan.
To me underground is about musical transition. From this point on we hear a more experimental Waits with more avant garde influences such as beefheart. I love this track and I think a transition musically is the meaning behind this.

Bob Dylan – Idiot Wind Lyrics 9 years ago
I listen to the lyrics and it puts me right back in one of the most dysfunctional relationships iv ever been in. This is not a bad thing because I'm out of it now and in a beautiful relationship. This track does it for me as I feel his pain, I really get that anger and frustration. So much resentment until I owned my part and stopped blaming. Great!!

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 9 years ago
To me it's about an educated, well read man but the real and bizarre world makes no sense to him. Nothing compares to real life experiences. That's what I get out the track anyway.

Tom Waits – Way Down in the Hole Lyrics 9 years ago
The Abyssinian Baptist Choir recorded a live album in the 50's I think entitled 'Shakin' the Rafters'. I don't know but I'd almost put money on Tom getting some inspiration from that album for this track, especially heard on his 'Big Time' version. Great track and shakin the rafters also a great listen for anyone interested in black gospel. One of my fav albums.

Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall Lyrics 9 years ago
With his words he truly could change the world. The problem is people not only need to listen, we need to believe and be willing to change. No need to say this here but Bob was years ahead of his time. To write this at such a young age. To have such insight is what amazes me. I feel blessed to of seen this guy at the opera house in Sydney. The last verse is profound. We must know our song before we can sing it.

On first listen it sounded like a prayer to me. And what a great track to listen to, soak in the lyrics before starting another day.

Tom Waits – 16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought-Six Lyrics 9 years ago
Old mate seems to be a little mad and insane. Going with the general theme of the album, I think this is about an ex soldier a little messed up after returning home from war.
I agree- a rocking song! Love the bridge school benefit version

Randy Newman – God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind) Lyrics 9 years ago
Randy Newman writes his lyrics differently than most. He seems to pick a particular character or stereotype or in this case, he all mighty, and gets us thinking. God is good and God is great or is he?? Mr Newman has a way of almost poking and prodding the listener for a response and it gets me thinking. What's my feeling, view or opinion on this one? A truly original songwriter.

Tom Waits – Come on Up to the House Lyrics 9 years ago
A dear friend of mine often says, "stay on the beam bro". Meaning Gods will is the only way. I'v spent much of my life running the show and it got me homeless, friendless and on the bones of my you know what. Through the love and support of people that introduced me to a higher power life is now doable. Difficult but a lot more manageable with some peace of mind. This track sums that up for me. Let go of the reins and have some faith. God bless Tom Waits.

Tom Waits – Cemetery Polka Lyrics 9 years ago
I interpret this as a crack at the everyday family. The whacky circus music that accompanies these lyrics make me think of my family, I think we can all relate somewhat. No family has really got it all together. Great track!!

Frank Zappa – Muffin Man Lyrics 9 years ago
The muffin man refers to the everyday dip shit that is quite happy following the same mundane rituals day in day out. It's franks humerus dig at the norm. Step out of the box, think for yourself and stop being such a fucking Muffin!!!
