Imogen Heap – Speeding Cars Lyrics 4 years ago
This song was very comforting to me wen was going through a rough time, cutting, and having suicidal thoughts. I felt like she was talking to me, telling me everything is okay and I need to forgive myself. I am thankful this song existed

Years & Years – Shine Lyrics 6 years ago
Considering the name of the album is Communion, there seems to be a recurring theme of god evoking imagery.

"It's shaking the sky"

"You can pull me under
You can raise everything to the ground"

"I was biting my tongue
I was trying to hide" (this line reminded me of the Adam and Eve story where they are hiding from God.)

"I'll recover if you keep me alive" (immediately reminded me of the famous line from Matthew "only say the word and my soul shall be healed")

It seems that whoever the song is about is like a God to the writer. No, I definitely don't think this whole album was supposed to be about a literal God. More like the things we treat as gods. Such as drugs in the song King, also in this album. In this instance, I interpreted it to be a lover.

Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics 6 years ago
There are just a couple things that I noticed that most people misunderstand. Number one, Lili Marlene is not a person, it is a record from the WW2. Number two, the killing is not literal. He is writing him a letter, he's still alive. Number three, the "thanks" isn't in a bitter manner. (In case you haven't really heard the song in a while, just a remainder, while the beginning is very gloomy, and the instruments instantly become more cheerful when L sings the word "thanks." this isn't my only justification lol)

@[mr_bunbun:26510] Lili Marlene is not a person. It is a WW1 record about distant love.

Years & Years – King Lyrics 6 years ago
I feel like on the surface this is about drugs, but the drug is a metaphor for a person that creates an unhealthy relationship, but the singer keeps going back to anyways.

Don't wanna have to lose
All that I've compromised
to feel another high
I've got to keep it down tonight

The writer probably made progress having detached themselves form the unhealthy relationship, and would lose that progress if they were drawn back to them again.

Marina and the Diamonds – Power and Control Lyrics 6 years ago
This song would be perfect for a Game of Thrones edit, maybe Marg or Sansa

Keane – Crystal Ball Lyrics 7 years ago
It seems to me like the singer is going through periods of depression and dissociation. There is a very strong feeling of detachment in the song. He is looking to a crystal ball to make things easy and tell him what the right path is (it can be seen to represent religion), but no matter how hard he stares into the ball, he doesn't get anything from it.

Marina and the Diamonds – Teen Idle Lyrics 8 years ago
I do agree a large element of this song is sarcastic. (but at the same time she does wish that she had lived a different kind of way.)
"The wasted youth
The pretty lies
The ugly truth
And the day has come where I have died
Only to find, I've come alive"
She pretended to be a clean, and wanted to be a "bottle" (fake) blonde.
I think she might have been talking about wasted years she spent trying to be someone else, when in the inside she was struggling with her beliefs, depression and possibly an eating disorder. She pretended to be an idol on the outside, but on the inside she was totally different. When she stopped putting on this facade she realized she could start living as herself and kill of the fakeness.

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 8 years ago
After reading all of these comments I was really depressed because I realized "wow I shouldn't sing this anymore it's so sexist," but then I reread the lyrics and it's not at all! John Mayor is a dick at times but this song is not an example of that. It's about how a father should take care of his daughter. If you don't love your daughters like you should, it could affect their love life in the future. Parents are essentially the god-like figures in a child world, hence the reference. What they do affects them forever.

Some people are just looking for something to be angry about.

Live – Selling The Drama Lyrics 8 years ago
"Selling the Drama" Well that seems pretty obvious that's a reference to how Christianity has turned into a large monopolized money making machine.

"we wont be raped... we won't be scared like that"
I think the writer had beliefs forced onto him, or someone attempted to "rape" him with their beliefs.

"I've willed, I've walked, I've read, I've talked, I know, I know, I've been here before" I'm not sure exactly what this means, but my best guess is that the writer is arguing that he has had enough experiences to know what is right/wrong without a holy book.
