I liked this song the first time I heard it, was awed by the female power in the video, and it just keeps growing on me more and more. The intro has such a spectacular hook. "I guess that hasn't changed someone Maybe nobody else could understand I guess that you believe you are a woman And that I am someone else's man" I'd always thought about the lyrics above in this way: In an attempt to understand why the guy is leaving her, she tries to put herself in his shoes. Maybe she thinks he doesn't feel like the "right" elements are there for the relationship to continue. Perhaps he believes she's not the one for him, but actually belongs to someone else. That someone else would be "better" for her. In so thinking that way, his purported view of their now defunct relationship takes on a very feminine, if you will, perspective. |

I know what this song is about, but for me, it always reminded me of all the people I've ever known in my life, who I thought were friends, but always ended up being nothing more than strangers. I'm not someone who ever liked to go around becoming best friends with everybody, so whenever I drifted away from someone who meant anything to me at all, it was always a sad kind of loss. We all end up alone in the end, if you think about it. Pretty sobering, if you think about it. So, I just learned to be okay with being by myself. |
