Train – Meet Virginia Lyrics | 9 years ago |
This song is about... A Waitress, who doesn't know what she wants out of life. The Narrator of this song is the gentleman who has been admiring Ms. Virginia from across the diner for years now. He is a regular there and he introducing Virginia to you from a distance. ----- She doesn't own a dress, her hair is always a mess If you catch her stealin', she won't confess >>> Imagine a waitress who works in a shirt and khakis all day. Coffee spillage is inevitable so she never wears dresses . "Catch her steal in" is an expression to describe how she picks up her tips..gratefully but nervous because she somehow feels like she doesn't deserve them. She's beautiful, she smokes a pack a day, wait that's me, but anyway >>> She really does smoke a pack a day out back, but her manager doesn't allow it, so the narrator is covering for her She doesn't care a thing about that, hey She thinks I'm beautiful. Meet Virginia >>> When she walks by, she says "good evenin' beautiful" >>> "meet virginia" He's introducing you to Virginia from afar -------- She never compromises, loves babies and surprises >>> She doesn't allow for substitutions to the menu, due to her bad memory, but always smiles for babies and extra tips ------ Wears hi-heels when she exercises Ain't that beautiful Meet Virginia >>> This is a play on words, She has to wear heels at work. Her "exercise" is running back and forth taking orders and delivering dishes. ------- Well she wants to be the Queen Then she thinks about her scene Pulls her hair back as she screams I don't really wanna be the queen >>> Another poetic play on words. She's painfully discouraged by her current waitress situation...she doesn't think she has what it takes to accomplish her dreams, so sadly she denies that she has any. ------ Her daddy wrestles alligators, Mama works on carburetors Her brother is a fine mediator for the President Well here she is again on the phone Just like me hates to be alone We just like to sit at home, and rip on the President >>> This reveals more seeds of her insecurity. She comes from a brave, talented, and intelligent family. They're out there impressing the world and "here she is again" struggling with her fear of loneliness. -------- Meet Virginia Well she wants to live her life Then she thinks about her life Pulls her hair back as she screams I don't really wanna live this life >>> She wants so badly to break free and live the life of her dreams but she is shackled by doubt and her perceived position in society ---------- She only drinks coffee at midnight, when the moment is not Right, her timing is quite unusual You see her confidence is tragic, but her intuition magic And the shape of her body unusual >>> She always takes her coffee break at the busiest time of night. >>> She lacks confidence, but has a magical way of making everyone around her happy even when she brings their food late.. >>> Her body shape is "unusually" well shaped for a waitress who works double shifts. It has yet to show the wear and tear of the abuse she puts it through. --------- Meet Virgina I can't wait to Meet Virginia, yeah e yeah hey hey hey >>> Here he reveals the secret that he has never formally met Virginia before. All that he knows of her is a compilation of their 2 or 3 sentence conversations and what he has observed of her from a distance. He himself struggles with inadequacy and hopes to one-day overcome his fears and speak with her one on one...and maybe perhaps help her to overcome hers |
Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I refuse to believe this is about love. For some reason, I think this song is about the battlefield of the mind of someone who has endured a mysterious trauma. I think there are 3 "voices" that this woman has listened to all her life: 1) The dark & malicious inner voice that wants to take her life [male voice] 2) The chorus which is her conscience yelling 'Hey!" hoping that she won't fall victim to the darkness within herself [chorus] 3) Her truest self that yearns for clarity [female voice] ----- I don't like walking around this old and empty house So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear The stairs creak as I sleep, It's keeping me awake It's the house telling you to close your eyes And some days I can't even trust myself It's killing me to see you this way >> Here the dark voice is trying to trick her into drawing deeper into sadness, she's too afraid to live alone because she's not sure she can trust herself not to hurt herself somehow either physically or emotionally. The darkness wants her to close her spiritual eyes to everything and sink deeper into sadness. -------- 'Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore >> at a point of desperation, she concedes to believe that everyone will end up in the same place on judgement day, despite what they subscribe to be "truth". And thus, she can trust that regardless of what happens to her, death will carry her [their] body safely to wherever it is that it's supposed to go. ------ "Hey! Hey! Hey" >> This once again is her conscience trying to plead with her ------ There's an old voice in my head That's holding me back Well tell her that I miss our little talks >> Here the darkness is hoping that the sadness that once held her back from living would re-emerge ------ Soon it will all be over, and buried with our past We used to play outside when we were young And full of life and full of love >> She suspects that she doesn't have much longer to live. She has been struggling with this madness from a young age even when she had more reason to be happy. And yet she hopes that if she plays her cards right, no one will ever have to know the battle she's been enduring all her life. ----- Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right. Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear >> Trickery. She can't decide which voice to listen to, and the darkness wants to convince her that he is the right one ------ Hey! Don't listen to a word I say Hey! The screams all sound the same Hey! >> All three voices are singing here at the same time, which indicates the essence of her mind-struggle, she doesn't know what to do because she doesn't know which voice to listen to because they're all so loud ------- You're gone, gone, gone away, I watched you disappear All that's left is a ghost of you Now we're torn, torn, torn apart, there's nothing we can do, Just let me go, we'll meet again soon >> She thinks she has a handle on her madness, and that she's accomplished normality...for now. She knows that her madness will always re-emerge... Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around I'll see you when I fall asleep >> and when it does re-emerge it's always stronger that it was before. [notice how intense this verse is compared to the others] Though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore >> It ends on this note to remind us that this is a vicious cycle that she endures, and her only sliver of hope lies along the shores of the afterlife. |
Lauryn Hill – Tell Him Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I may be the only one who has this thought but here it goes! It sounds to me like the "Tell Him" chorus is more of a conversation than a simple declaration. If you can imagine Jesus on the Cross, his life, his walk, and his victory was the epitome of love... Jesus pleaded: Tell Him I need Him God declared: Tell Him I love Him then God whispered to Jesus: Everything's gonna be alright Meanwhile, the rest of the lyrics feel like they are Jesus' inner most thoughts leading up to the cross Though I may suffer I'll envy-eth not And endure what comes Cause He's [His Father in Heaven] all that I got While I don't think this is exactly what Lauryn intended to illustrate from this song, it speaks to me this way! :) |
