@[lairfans12:1839] Thanks! The only reason I know this myself (that "stonies" mean non-college locals) is because I used to live down there in the 70s (when this song was released). There are not that many limestone quarries in operation anymore, so I don't know if the locals are still referred to that way at the present time. |

The term "stonies" in the song is a term used in the Bloomington, Indiana area (where John Mellencamp is from and continues to reside) to refer to "local people" (as opposed to the college students of Indiana University in Bloomington). "Stonies" is short for "stone cutters", local workers who mine the limestone quarries. Sometimes they are also called "cutters". |

George was involved in Transcendental Meditation at one point; got disillusioned with that and moved on the Hare Krishna and their meditative practice (mantra meditation). |

In the album, "All Things Must Pass", the background singers are listed as "The George Harrison Singers". In reality, the "background singers" are all George Harrison. He just recorded himself over and over again, making it sound like it was a group of people.
I often wondered why he never included the full Hare Krishna Maha-mantra in the song. This is my speculation: for this mantra to have its full effect, it must be heard from a qualified person. George, humbled the power of this mantra, probably also realized that he wasn't the one that one should hear this mantra from. So he left the last part of the mantra out. |

I'm pretty sure he is referring to the Catholic Pope, as a way of referencing the Catholic Church's heavy investments in Gulf Oil, Shell, General Motors, Bethlehem Steel, General Electric, IBM and a few others. |
