Not a prostitute. This song was written the same year that Chandra Levy disappeared and that Senator from California had to finally admit that he was having an affair with her. The first time I heard the song, I couldn't help but think that Chandra Levy was too close to the words Alexandra Leaving. Just my thought....

I don't disagree with the interpretation of this song paraphrasing the poem about Mark Anthony, however, since this song was written in the same year that Chanra Levy disappeared and the Senator that was having an affair with her at first tried to deny it, that a lot of the song intersects with Chandra's disappearnce. Chandra Levy - Alexander Leaving, just a little too close to each other

This song was written in the same year that Chandra Levy disappeared, and there was something of a scandal because a Senator was having an affair with her. Alexandra Leaving - Chandra Levy sounds like a play on words. There is a poem about the fall of Marc Anthony in Alexandra, Egypt when the Romans took back the city, and it is surely an inspiration for this song, however, I imagine that Leonard and Sharon were thinking about Chandra while they wrote this song.

Yeah, besides the reference to the wheel inside a wheel which is a common reference to UFOs in ancient times (there is a reference to a wheel inside a wheel in the old testament that is interpreted as a UFO) the whole song speaks to a first encounter with aliens.

Seems to me this is a song about aliens - slippery people - landing on earth during a time of turmoil and offering a solution. Some people are not ready to accept the aliens, and the people that see them as the only hope are trying to dissuade those that would want to kill them.

I always thought this was a song about an animal, such as a deer, that is being hunted my a human. The rivers dark is the place the animal must go to drink, even though he knows the river is dangerous because the hunter waits there for him.
