Queen – We Will Rock You Lyrics 3 years ago
@[MoonlitKnight:35566] That's really something there... considering most the record sales were from people you might consider to "average person" and is if any life is a picnic(??) everybody's got it rough especially the ones who don't complain because they understand that it's nobodies fault they are dealt the cards they're dealt. the song is is most certainly about the "average" just like the foo fighters song "My Hero" the narration about a rich & famous rock star who realizes the guy mowing his lawn on Saturday and really only expects life to be life and works hard anyway.

America – Tin Man Lyrics 4 years ago
Doesn't mean anything. just cleverly timed syllables in words that sound good phonically to a great progression and great singing. They might have even just kept the "scratch lyrics" intended to be filled in later with literal sense making sentences to cohesive topic, but never got back in time to finish it. happened all the time in the 60's & 70's. you'd be surprised to find out who did the same on other well known songs. I wouldn't read too much into it guys

Peter Frampton – Lines on My Face Lyrics 5 years ago
Remembering when I noticed that this song had played over and over for an entire weekend at a house I was at in around 78. it was the time, people were in and out that whole weekend and the record just repeated reset over and over - never stopped playing. it became the silence. of course we were all huge huge fans of the record just like everybody else at the time, but it’s just funny how somebody had went over to the record player, placed the disk on the side with Lines On My Face - Feel Like I Do” On probably Friday night and by Sunday evening It was still playing when I decide to go home finally.. it’s probably still playing or I would imagine the “Stereo” might’ve died sometime in the interim and the music slows and died with it but it might all still be there with an inch of dust buildup

The Police – Shadows In The Rain Lyrics 6 years ago
smoke, sniff & alcohol induced psychosis. heavy partying in excess to the point of needing to see a doctor. young Rock & Roller with a full set of golden keys... the life situation we think we'd all wished for at one point or another. Sting lived thru but many don't

Gilbert O'Sullivan – Alone Again (naturally) Lyrics 6 years ago
@[catherineks:25699] i think it would be a bit much as a slow balled done in minor Key mode... they're trying to tell a story, not cause recoil or suicides. the "happy ending" is the jaunty feel of the rhythm section and melody. That said, this number in it's heaviest rotation wasn't all that far off the birth of disco and i would be willing to bet it got played as such - or attempted that is. now That would've been weird - to see people dancing to it. so touché' on that

Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics 6 years ago
Hollywood. You're either inside or outside. yes you could live smack dab in the middle of it and not be even close to what's really the wheels turning of Hollywood. Insiders dabble with outsiders, but an outsider wishing to be IN is near impossible and has to walk a very fine line of conduct as well as Bring something to the party, one; as a gift & two; a commodity (you're talent - celebrity) or something that will supportive of the Hollywood insider culture lifestyle. and never threaten it's bubble or it's extremely fragile vanity. the first person narrator (the character that Fagen is singing) is an outsider who's almost "IN" by virtue of an insider that is basically sponsoring them. the Gaucho is a friend of the outsider and last vestige of associations that will get them cut from the channels to their ambitions of acceptance into tinseltown and someone who will never make the grade and is possibly going to blow it for the ambitious social climber.

Moral of... is, the elusiveness of the objects of our ambitions by virtue of the perceived inadequacies about ourselves we'er attempting to rectify with externals like higher society climbing, monetary wealth and material acquisition... fame & fortune

Nigey Lennon wrote in her Book "Being Frank" that she believed this song was about her - along with other parts of the album One Size Fits All material being somewhat inspired by FZ's relationship with her. given the timeline it does seem to make sense.

AC/DC – The Jack Lyrics 7 years ago
this is about the power-play between two mutually attracted low life's... he's trying to get with her, and she's subjecting him to a game wherein if he wins, he gets her. if he losses he gets nothing (but she might still give it to him, just a lil later on). he's looking for a "Jack" to complete a flush or a straight or a 3 of a kind... but every deal is absent so he starts to realize that She's Got The Jack! so he'll need to look for another hand.

but yes the meaning is meant to be universally analogical ...which is genius of the Bon

Manfred Mann – Blinded by the Light Lyrics 7 years ago
this song means nothing. it's just a play on words to fill the song with lyrics for the practical necessity needing a completed song.
lines already roughly formed in his head from mental banks of rough lyrical song stock, random off the cuff subject fuses to link lines together that make absolutely No Sense as pieces and/or fit together as a whole but sound ok flying by the "adolescent" ear who is usually "Blinded by - more than just - the light" in a jamming rock & roll song, and literal or interpretive descriptions of physical objects in his present surroundings as the lyrics developed... is i think the 3 main sources where Bruce Springsteen drew from to create this great yet nonsensical lyrical un-masterpeiced of teenage east coast skank rock

Adele – Set Fire to the Rain Lyrics 7 years ago
this song interprets what i went thru 5 years ago not so much in a literal verbatim way but in the musicality and energy of the structure of the song and of course most of the lyrics too.
when someone you fell totally in love while believing it was mutual then start to see that person go on sabotage with unspoken yet clear intentions of destroying any future together but never just coming out and saying it sort of playing games and being mean and messing with your heart as you scramble like a fool trying to hold on and recover what you know dreadfully is no longer there... i think "Let It Burn" in the soaring cry vocals that she sings it means to me anyway to open the floodgates of burning pain that you feel when your heart is betrayed so harshly and just let it burn and feel it.

Frank Zappa – Montana Lyrics 8 years ago
yo this is confusing. Montana was written by Frank Zappa not "Gustavo Alfredo Santaolalla" wts that ^^spoze to mean? ..i see this on another site where it also (to confuse matters more) states this song is from "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" well that's true there is a live rendition of it but it's originally from "Over Night Sensation"

America – Tin Man Lyrics 8 years ago
@[rockographer:6236] interesting... i relate to this scenario very much as i am a musician that aspired towards the stars and found myself stumbling into "ideal" situations from time to time and felt that i had blown it because i was suddenly beside myself because being in the casual midst of celebrities and "sophistication which the two most definitely run together can really bring contrast to how we really are and how we try to be when were wanting to fit in and there does exist a code of behavior and i ultimately found it uncomfortable and trying too hard to be liked. what i've learned over the years is that being awkward is ok as long as you stay humble and modest simple and nice... i've even used the theory on stage while preforming and it works! the audience picks up and a vibe perhaps subliminally but affective nevertheless. thanks for sharing your interpretation

Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics 9 years ago
Paranoia plane and simple. cocaine induced psychosis. the several reference to road work and workers like "You fellah, you tearin' up the street… You wear that white tuxedo, How you gonna beat the heat"
are classic symptoms of paranoid thinking like the excavation is all just staged to watch you and/or mess with you and/or to make the arrest that never happens yet somehow never satiates the manic obsession that they're all after you they just don't have enough on you yet.. even the loaf with bad sneakers bar hopping around Burbank is after you and he's already received and advance of a "large sum" to carry out his contract to off you. Five names and a chimp …yeah the band and Michael McDonald (or perhaps some other dan satellite member) cooped up in a self imposed dungeon of musical perfection torture studio session …anybody would go insane and laugh at the frozen rain(coke).

...yet another absolute masterpiece from my favorite band

Todd Rundgren – Devil's Bite Lyrics 9 years ago
Seems success has its own plagiarist in the form of some countering bad luck or some seemingly -out of nowhere- confrontation that threatens to take all (and some more) of a new found and hard won prize of success. Todd was on top of the world prior to recording the album Runt" with this song on it but had just prior suffered a heartbreaking loss of love and some kinda debilitating physical injury and with that the great adversarial spirt was on his heals in all forms of bad luck threatening to punish him for be good. Todd slayed the dragon and scared off the demons bigtime on this one.

Gin Blossoms – Found Out About You Lyrics 9 years ago
its about a guy who suffered the loss of what might have been mostly in his head as he puts all of his eggs in one basket for whatever reason instead of taking the time to really get to know a little about someone before jumping in both feet. Its why dating is important and its also why dating more than one person is a healthy (not saying rolling in the sack.. i.e. not advocating promiscuity) way to find someone special to have a long term relationship with.
Doug Hopkins was a genius musician and song writer but despite that he was in fact miserable sob too.
He totally went on self destruct and sabotage mode just at the absolute perfect time to completely destroy all that he and his band mates had worked all those years for, and naturally and quite understandable his band mates said F that Sh!t dude …you gotta go! bcuz of the very real threat of having a major record label legal team on their asses with major litigation they did the right thing and let him go. Back to this song tho… I did the same thing when i had moved to a big city and thru the web was contacted by an old girlfriend from my high school days who was surprisingly living in the same city and was single and was mutually interested. Long story short: I completely lost myself in her and all the strange but (what seemed) wonder of it all that we would reunite after so many years in a city far away from where we grew up… it seemed TOO good to be true… and as it turned, out it was.
Very unstable and was the perfect set up for one person completely getting smashed and the other having an relatively easy exit from what became sort of a ship wreck.
i played the fool role and went completely to pieces emotionally …it really is like going from being on an luxury liner cruse-destined to paradise, to suddenly being on a makeshift life raft of sorts in the middle of the sea totally alone… such betrayal, disappointment and heartache had no chance of ever permeating my foolish mind in any other way before that happened and if you can make it thru alive… it forever changes you.
I listened to this song recently as it came on my iTunes shuffle and it still brings tears to my eyes but not so much for my own sorrow but because i know what doug Hopkins went thru and he portrays the defeat so accurately in the lyrics and also what ultimately happened to him ..

Steely Dan – Dont Take Me Alive Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about a sniper atop a high-rise taking out random "luckless pedestrians" "mechanized hum of another world" he hears a world that to him is insane chaotic, "where no sun is shining" ..he's despondent "no red lights flashing" his view is of a threshold of both the world in which he's grown desperate as a victim and resents humanity as well as the world that beckons him with guarantees of accepting his failings and will not judge him or come after and arrest him ("No red lights flashing") for what he's about to do and/or has already done. "can you hear the evil crowd… the lies and the laughter" refers to how eye for an eye and barbaric the "general public" can become when they grant themselves permission because someone goes off the deep end and goes postal and how it brings out the ugliest in so called "normal people" ..the irony in it all that we in society sometimes become uglier than the crime itself when someone flips out. drawing on their background as english lit guys they have the ability to see thru the eyes of the "protagonist" in without bias and this against the music they arranged puts this song like many others of their's a level of genius

Steely Dan – Dr Wu Lyrics 10 years ago
I always thought this was an abstract /esoteric illustration of the boys in the studio for hours days months and substituting heroin with Ketamine in order to get through sessions while going thru withdrawals because of dope dry periods that can cause excruciating periods of misery. Ketamine (Katy) is a weird drug that can offer escape but with a price not all too worth it's dark and dangerous side ..look it up and match it to the first verse. Katy's all that's available at the moment but it "lies" by it's inability to fill the shoes of the big China white heroin ( "Dr Wu" ) they salivate for, but they chip away at Katy in order to stay productive in the LARGE BUDGET North Hollywood studio. Becker and Fagan don't always follow an exact chronological order in their stories as their muse would rather mock an imitation Picasso prowess then to risk a trite lyric. "Katy tried" i was half way crucified, i was on the other side of…" You walked in and my life began again, just when id spent the last piaster i could borrow" --this line i think really refers to the narrators sigh of relief when "Dr Wu" (the heroin and/or the dealer) walked into the studio after several days of hit then missed connections and even getting burned once which is unavoidably inevitable if one is strung out ("strung out here all night") and risking outside and unfamiliar source connections to get their fix. it also refers to how dark and dangerous Ketamine can be. as mentioned by another commenter The sax solo section really does illustrate a threshold into a new development to the story where things are ok and have been for a little while and nobodies going to spell out that Dr Wu did finely show up with the "surprise" only "imagined" and the narrater (in first person) describes a state indescribable oblivion in an scenario of "cuban gentlemen sleep all day" High as can be in opium den in Biscayne Bay and how inadequate Katy (Ketamine) is in the face ("you can see it in her eyes") of a full dose of Dr Wu which-unlike "Katy" induces a feeling about ones self that is anything but "ordinary"

Al Stewart – Time Passages Lyrics 10 years ago
there's an element of sadness almost intentionally masked in this song mixed into it's otherwise cheerful wisdom. the lines "Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight" implies a slight suicidal urge but also an acceptance of things past looked at with the wisdom gained from the lessons of living life which doesn't always make us super strong beings but more likely, although smarter, with greater sensitivity. the line also implies the character in the song requests the "ticket" be purchased for them rather than pay for it themselves, which is interesting b/c if so, rather than suicide they just feel like they feel ready to move on from this life since pain might be all they have to look forward to with fleeting intervals of fulfillment, joy and happiness. the reference to "last train home" most likely means the forever " death Home" where we go when we die.

Fleetwood Mac – Hypnotized Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is like its subject. In the vast world of rock and roll it stands out as a strange anomaly granted for those who are sensitive enough to run with the sparks of imagery and mysticism not to far beneath the surface. At it's worst it's just a grooving "chill" song. but it can be like the "strange pond" discovered in the woods that defied all native cognition of the trail bike riders on that day… this cross section of reality will on occasion randomly wink at us or shuffle its feet, often leaving inspiration, magic, miracles and all kinds of items of peace love and harmony as its residue asking only that we enjoy it to it's fullest. This song has always "hypnotized" me.

The Allman Brothers Band – Midnight Rider Lyrics 11 years ago
i think that it's an outlaw biker talking about their current circumstances. though obviously the author draws from their experience as a touring musician, song writers (particularly rock musicians from a relative time period) often exaggerate their experiences to come up with material that reflects in part things they might be romancing about and/or often the artist doesn't feel their particular story (verbatim) is anything worth writing into a song.
