Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics 10 years ago
"All that you see or seem...Is but a dream within a dream."

This song reminds me of that Edgar Allen Poe quote. It's clearly a perspective that is playing with the idea of a world that is all our own creation. Solipsism. There are more intricate aspects to the song that deal with hiding insecurities and trying to suppress feelings of pain as well. But the general idea, is Solipsism. You are not real. I am. And that is all I know.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't really know how to explain my interpretation...But somehow I feel like he is singing about himself. I realize there are fragments of the song that quite obviously go against my theory, but to me this is about him being torn between his true identity and what others feel he should be. He never loved himself more than when he left...Left the pain that was the only constant where he was before. But no matter how far he ran, there was still that baggage. The baggage that Conor sings through first person as. He is two separate entities...The one he sings the song through, and then the one he is actually singing ABOUT.

The sound of loneliness makes him happier...He just wants to be alone. One person. One being. One interpretation of human existence.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 11 years ago
I know that this song is very open to be interpreted, but I read somewhere that the song was actually written about a friend the band had named Michael, who was involved in a gang. The scarves of red were bandannas, the blood was him dying because of the trouble the gang got him in. It's a beautiful song.

Bright Eyes – A Perfect Sonnet Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel like thorough interpretations of the entirety of the song have already been posted, and there's no need for me to go over all of it. I did want to mention something that really stood out to me as profound and clever. The very last lines:

"Now I believe that lovers should be draped in flowers
And laid entwined together on a bed of clover
And left there to sleep
Left there to dream of their happiness"

At first this seems to be a contradiction to how negative he viewed lovers, but, when I reread it and reread it (because I could read Bright Eyes lyrics for hours), I realized that this was the cruelest thing he could say to lovers. He doesn't say, 'Left there to 'enjoy' their happiness', he says left there to 'DREAM' of it, because there is no actual happiness.

He's telling them they're IGNORANT. That they are under a facade and completely clueless to the fact that they are actually unhappy, and the closest they'll get to love is complacency. He's laughing at them. Gahhhh, I love Bright Eyes. Oh my God.

Angus and Julia Stone – Paper Aeroplane Lyrics 11 years ago
Lovely, simple song. I think the purpose of the letter, is that it really is not directed towards anyone. This female he sings about, in actuality does not exist, that's why he couldn't write (or think of) her name. It's all fictional. The point of the paper aeroplane is to touch the lives of strangers, so that they may find love that he does not have, and it keeps floating and floating, and maybe one day it will fall into the hands of HIS somebody.

My interpretation is probably very different than others. I can see how it could mean other things too, this is just how I felt. :)

Kacey Musgraves – Merry Go 'Round Lyrics 11 years ago
I LOVE this song. I love it because of the simplicity and honesty in the lyrics. They aren't embellished with fancy words or tricky symbolism. It is deep on a level of realistic perception that is so hard to find nowadays.

It's about the close mindedness that is prevalent in small towns. The complacency that is disguised as happiness. The ambition that is hidden away, left to settle in the dust and to be forgotten about.

Beautiful song. Underrated, in my opinion. This isn't just a short lived radio hit, it is a country gem. Rare, clever, REAL lyrics.

Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics 11 years ago
My interpretation of this song, is that the singer is a bit of a loose cannon (obvious reference to the title of the song). He's been hurt many times before. His heart has been broken many times before.

"Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to lie
Life taught me to die"

Those lines represent him having terrible experiences. Everything that should have been good went bad, and he knows he should be hesitant in this love that he is falling into all over again, but it's hard for him to listen to his learned logic,"when he floats like a cannonball" and dives right into the affection and hope he's always wanted but has lost so many times prior.

What really ties my interpretation together is this line, which happens to be my favorite:

"So come on courage!
Teach me to be shy "

That is the most simple, beautiful part of the whole song for me. It means that he is too open, he has too much 'courage' for love. He knows due to past hardships that he should be taking it slower, and be more 'shy' with the relationship, but he just can't help it. Because, he 'floats like a cannonball', meaning, he doesn't float at all. He dives right into love, and crashes every time at the bottom.

Mumford & Sons – Liar Lyrics 11 years ago
I love the raw emotion in this song. It's very authentic and full of resentment. Obviously it can be construed in multiple ways, but I find it to have a very specific meaning. The singer of the song was cheated on by his lover, whom he is very very in love with, and who he gave everything to, which left him vulnerable. It seems that she has not only done it once but a few times, and 'like a coward', he merely 'hangs his head', and forgives her (outwardly), because he NEEDS her, and she is his POISON, and he can't do anything to hurt her (which could be done possibly by confronting her), even thought she has done a lot to hurt him. Some people have interpreted him breaking it off with her, but I actually see her leaving him.

He asks her to 'please don't cry, you LIAR', meaning she feels terrible about her abandoning him, but he sees her act of leaving as her not caring at all, thus LYING about everything they had.

The ending lines tie it all together for me:

"You're leaving for your last kiss
And who in this world could ask me to resist
Your hands cold as they find my neck"

He hates her, but her presence arouses complete submission inside him. He CANNOT say no to her goodbye kiss, because he loves her touch so much, no matter what this evil woman has done to him, he can't 'resist'. The last line is a metaphor. This terrible 'cold' woman, finds his neck, and strangles him. Leaves him dry of any hope or love because of what she's done. Because of her 'lies', and what he thought was love.

Finally, the conclusion is a poor outlook on love, a hatred for it: "All this love that I've found I detest"

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 11 years ago
To me this song is all about artificial societal conformity. The goal to be what the world deems is 'perfect' is a constant challenge because of aging and 'gravity' as mentioned in the song. It speaks of a man who was a plastic surgeon who once thought looks were everything, that's where he first fell in love and that's where his money came from, but eventually he realized that there is no authenticity in pretending to be something else. The perpetual struggle to remain perfect actually causes imperfection, and in conclusion, 'it wore him out', like it wears all of us out. Perfection is nonexistent, and we're all living in a fake plastic world trying to be something we're not.
