Tool – Swamp Song Lyrics 7 years ago
My first instinct was that this song was about alcohol or some other drug addiction. The bog of course referring to the pool of problems you can find yourself in if you let the addiction get control. So be careful when you fuck around with drugs cause you may never come back again!

The Shins – The Celibate Life Lyrics 7 years ago
Just from the first lyric it seems to be written from the perspective of someone who just spent four days sleeping with another person. This was not a relationship. Now he/she is dealing with all the uncertainty and strange feelings. Just an idea.

Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 10 years ago
I kind of get the feeling that all the metaphors in this referencing religion are actually just a satirical joke at people who actually think God is something that is all knowing and plays an active role in our everyday lives. "Angels on the sidelines" seems it could just be a way of saying the angels are watching but never impacting what happens on earth even though Angels are supposed to be guardian spirits. People are dieing everyday for the silliest reasons and God does nothing for them. "How they survive so misguided is a mystery" is funny because it comes off as if someone guided them, perhaps God? God is misguiding the human race and yet they are surviving. They are surviving because science is conquering religion. "Cut and divide it all right in two" is just a way of saying kill, at least in the context of the song.

Monkeys are continuously used to refer to humans. Not only because we behave like monkeys, but they are also a close ancestor. I feel like the close ancestor is more relevant because our brains are just a more developed monkey brain. We should realize this and use that difference to understand that violence is not the answer. It sucks though because we have dug the human society as a whole into a big hole so it would be very difficult to bring world peace. However, it is still possibly to rid the world of fear. Imagine a world where everyone appreciated each other, imagine the prosperity. No money would need to go into military expenses. everyone could have shelter and education. At this point It would have be a global reform, even then there would be problems.
Anyway, I'm off topic.

The song is about the stupidity of Humans over their history, It's not completely their fault because a lot of them were misguided. The human mind was ignorant and therefore gullible. This might sound like a conspiracy and it might now be a joke on God, but I guess none of us really know. I do feel some other things I brought up stand on their own without the religion references.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 10 years ago
Life with just logic is not meaningless. Being able to use logic is what makes us human. It is why we evolved t become what we are today. It is exactly why why we have emotions. We developed morals because as our brains evolved we realized that we needed to work together to advance and in the process we learned to care for one another and also hate. It is the misuse and failure to use logic that causes all of our problems.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 10 years ago
PEOPLE stop over analyzing the song!!! The lyrics are as straightforward as they come. Live for the moment and embrace every single part of life. The spiral simply refers to growing and learning from new experiences. Don't live in the past.. Don't over analyze. Live in the present and enjoy every moment of life that is thrown at you. Look up the fibonnacci spiral. It's a mathematical way of representing a spiral. The spiral continuously grows outward. This is exactly what Maynard wants every human to do... continue to grow and stay on the spiral and learn from new experiences. Use your body (which is just the physical way for your mind to interact with the physical world) and your mind to enjoy life. Recognize how lucky you are to be a part of this mind boggling world. Your body and mind are one and are reliant upon on each other. Without a body a mind is useless, without a mind a body is useless.

Tool – Opiate Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is bashing the people who feel they have a direct connection with God or can in some way hear his will. I think Maynard might be showing a little hatred toward those who abuse religion by saying they have a connection with God. Therefore, I get the feeling that Maynard is taking a stab at organized religion since a direct physical connection with God is kind of ludicrous tbh. You can say you have a connection with God, but it's not something that can ever be proven physically. Thinking you have a mental connection with him in your own mind is fine, just don't start using it to control and trick people.

Tool – The Pot Lyrics 10 years ago
Just have to say this... Not all stoners are lazy and worthless. As a matter of fact I'm a stoner, but I'm not lazy because of weed and I have a lot of friends who smoke and aren't lazy. I also don't know what you mean by "Druggies might be liars" that is just ridiculous, drugs and lieling are not intertwined. I can see what you mean by calling out the hypocrites and blaming others but not realizing your own faults. However, I don't think those few things I mentioned earlier are ever represented in this song. I know it wasn't intended by Tool either because they aren't that ignorant.

Tool – Parabola Lyrics 10 years ago
Tool refers a lot to the body, but then also continues to bring up being "eternal" as in our mind makes us eternal. They separate body and mind because they really are. I'm not exactly sure what they mean by body... but the line "Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing" (one of the best tool moments imo) gives me the impression they mean it as if you should always take this into consideration. This doesn't relate to the song much but our bodies are just survival machines for our mind. Any pain you suffer in your brain that's not related to protecting your body/mind (burns, cuts) is not worth it and really is just an illusion. Focus on the now, don't get too caught up in things because from what we know life is a remarkable event that should never go to waste.

It's about letting go and moving on. It's pretty straight forward if you ask me.
