What does being an athiest have to do with why she wrote this song? If she is or isnt (i dont know), but I am and remain a Catholic and this is MY FAVOURITE SONG by this artist. She sheds a new light on a sad truth of the world. Anyone who says God is perfect may be right, he is all mighty, saves us from sin, etc... but, there are also things that were done in the Bible that even I find questionable. This song is mearly doing exactly what everyone else does: blames the saddnesses and wrongs of the mortal world we are living in on someone else of a higher power.

Random person who commented before me:

The hookah in the song can be taken in a different sense, yes it was a character, but the meaning behind it in the song is entirely different. =o=

Well, sometimes people feel offended by how someone outright insults a song/its meaning by putting something rubbish up for the world to see. :|

Look, you are ruder than most people I know...and I know some pretty rude people.

Your opinion is clouded by your supreme idea that YOU know everything about everything and EVRYONE ELSE is wrong in comparrison, even smaller in wits and ability to disect a song for the meaning that THEY PERSIEVE.

If you think that the meaning is so simple as that you are confused. The meaning of the song runs deeper than a classic fairytale. It uses the fable, I agree, to litteralise the lyrics; NOT to tell the story in a different way.

Your one tracked mind has led you to believe that the fable was based on some girl's dream world, and I give it to you, it probably was. IT'S KINDA OBVIOUS that the song was writen after the fable was in 1885, BUT that doesn't mean that the song made a new way of looking at the story and played on some themes not out right shot at the readers in the original fable.

Sheesh, what's with the swearing....you're so rude I just can't even stand people like you....

Saying it has nothing to do with drugs is hard to back up in anyone's mind. This song has referance to severale hallucinogenic drugs and reffers Alice constantly to a substance or even as a user. Although your analysis explained your point of view very well I have to dissagree and say that although yours made sense, abuse of adicive substances is very much so a key factor in the song's meaning, how it realtes and how it is interperated by very many people....

What the song is about overall: Alice is a litteral replacement for a drug, a hallucinogenic or depressive drug that has become an adiction to (because the song is addressing the listener) essentially you/the person listening to the song. It is a song of warning, telling people that adiction is a serious thing and that people need to be aware of it. Back when this song was writen most lyrics were removed when played on the radio because of the strict guidlines songwriters had to follow (one of them was: no mentioning of the effects, abuse or usage of drugs/alcohol). In order for there to be no removed lyrics artists would commonly use, in a sense: Allegories, in order for their music to be unchanged and still hold the same meaning and purpose.

In the case of this song the Allegory is the fable: Alice in Wonderland. Alice (could be percieved as both the substance or the abuser) has found herself in a sticky situation, she's addicted to a drug. You, the person the song is addressing, are following a similar path and are going to be stuck there soon as well. The narrator is telling you to <> (if you didn't get it, the narrator means: <> (high meaning on drugs)).

<> The rabbit is another Allegory of drug abuse. The rabbit is litterally a dealer, if you're chasing him that means you've got yourself hooked and you need another fix (drugs) to regain that high you're itching for. The narrator later tells you to <> which says something about Alice's character as well. She can help you, but in a good way?

There is also the mentioning of "mushroom"; mushrooms (or "shrooms") are a hallucinogenic drug. Then that <> you're off the high and you're starting to simmer down, your high now gone. The narrator, again, tells you to <> only now the narrator tells you that Alice knows; probably a way of telling you that Alice has taken them along with other drugs.

Basically, if ALL of that made no sense, here's what the song's about in the simple "I didn't want to read all that so I just skipped to the end" summary: Drugs are bad for you, don't take them, you can wind up in a deep hole with no way out. Stay clean, stay safe. Goodnight/Good day/Good bye folks, that's all from me for now!!!

Metallica – Nothing Else Matters Lyrics 11 years ago
I read through some of the comments before writing my own opinion of the song's meaningful nature. Some of them were useless and a whole lot'a babble, others were religiously based, which made me want to gague and roll on the floor, and occasionally some good points were mentioned. My interpretation of the song will probably have the same reactions to the ones I'd seen above or worse of ones. So, here I go, I'll try and summerize as best I can!

Nothing Else Matters-Metallica

When I'd first heard this song I was stumped, I didn't know what they were talking about, how could such a melody have lyrics of such dark nature, well, this is how I percieve it after replaying it to the point of having 567 plays on my Itunes:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Comment: The narrator speaks of a first love, or maybe even a true love after searching many years for him/her (perhaps also a signifacant other). In love we need to trust, and even more so in ourselves. The narrator says that in love trust and being true to your heart is all that matters.
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Comment: The narrator is opening himself to him/her like a book, telling secrets and sharing things he/she'd of never imagined sharing. He/she is having a spur of reality, rebellion even, deciding that their life is their own and that he/she is determined to live it how they want no matter what people say. Being true to you is all that matters.
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Comment: The narrator now is finding a sense of belonging and trust in their significant other, learning new things and keeping an open mind towards what's happening. Being open and willing to change is all that matters.
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
Comment: The narrator is accusing people of not caring enough for their actions and shaming them for not using their knoweledge. He says he knows, something of the reality. Perhaps a break in the trust?
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us, something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Comment: The narrator repeats himself, obviosuly destressed from some event, telling you that he/she needs to stay true to themselves and rebuild a trust. Again, he/she says that trust and staying true is all that matters.
Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know
Comment: Now we know there has been a break somewhere between then and now. The narrator tells us that they don't care about their actions, that they're playing games and know it. He/she might appear oblivious to what's going on, but he/she makes it clear that they KNOW what's happening, that they have and still do.
So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters
Comment: The song ends with a specific cluster of lyrics, saying that you need to trust in you and not others. He/she says that no matter how far you are, or how close you are to love or something more than what you have, always stay close and true to you, that's all that matters.
Anyway, that's my disection of the song, and how I interpreted it so many times over. Feel free to agree and disagree, but that's how I see it. A song is a song and a song holds a meaning; how we as individuals take in that meaning is how we as individuals will learn to appreciate the song as a piece of art, and even at times, a part of us. We relate and understand things differently, hope this helped!
