Genesis – Turn It On Again Lyrics 2 years ago
..\n\nThis is a masterful song by the greatest rock and roll group mankind has ever put forth on the planet Earth.\n\nKeep in mind, I HATED Genesis .. I listened to them .. incessantly .. for ten YEARS before some wonderful it came washing over me like an ocean wave while standing in chest high water.\n\nI was on the radio for 27 years. Raised four kids and two ex-wives with my mouth.\n\nNow, this song is a little weirder for people who have experienced what I have ... and this is mostly in a time-frame before the Internet.\n\nFor some doggone reason, I seemed to be INTENSELY POPULAR with wack jobs. Nutz. Weirdos. Freaks. People that didn\'t take their meds that day. Think it\'s all a conspiracy? You must live in Cleveland and listen to Double D every day. \n\nI was huge with them.\n\nAnd they would break in to the studio. And be standing there when I came off mic. And scare the crap out of me.\n\n20 .. thirty times this happened. Calling the police, handcuffs, the whole thing.\n\nSO .. \n\nI started to play in to it. And it was *THIS* song that led me there. It was a roadmap that let me see inside their minds. And how I could manipulate that. ANd go more widespread and being a cult-type of situation. Introduce DRAMA and a PLOTLINE to every radio show. Get the newspapers involved. Sensational real-life drama that their were news stories, news stories that led the six o\'clock TV news. AND YOU JUST HAD TO .. tune in tomorrow at 2PM to see what I was going to say about *THAT*.\n\n\n..\n\nSo, for some ... mutants ... *I* was the guy that was their best buddy. It was just me and him or me and her. For decades. On TV shows, there\'s lots of characters and many shows. I was on for four A DAY ... every day .. Monday through Friday. \n\nAnd either I figured out how to gather and keep an audience .. or my kids starved.\n\nNow that was *MY* existence.\n\nI used this song as a roadmap to communicate with the infirmed, the lesser, the sedated.\n\nAnd then .. \n\n.. I came after you.\n\nIn the same fashion.\n\nIt worked.\n\nThanks, Mike.\n\nYou gave me a career.\n\n..

The Human League – (Keep Feeling) Fascination Lyrics 7 years ago
First and foremost, the song is meant to get you to move your ass. This is supposed to infect you and make you move a little. That's the catchiness. And even if your mind is not Fascinated with the lyrics, your body is quite Fascinated with the music.

I'm surprised at how forthright and bold the lyrics are. Not much subtlety. There are no allegories or metaphors. It means what it says and says what it means.

I chased after this song after hearing it in a Walgreens. That should tell you something there. At one time, The Human League was pretty advanced .. almost RADICAL English Synth Pop. It was pretty progressive. The reason I went after it was the DEVO sound to it. I was surprised that Devo could influence these people in England all the way from Akron, OH. But, it's pure Devo .. and not Whip It like most people know. The album tracks .. the deeper cuts. It sounds exactly like this. I always thought of Devo as punk and New Wave. It never occurred to me that they had a massive influence over synth pop, as well. But they did have INTENSE hooks and catchiness to almost all of their songs so .. those came from synthesizers and there you have the baby .. sired by the parent.

The lyrics are plain. They are what they are. Don't blow your fucking brains out. Get excited about being alive. It's not Floyd or Genesis.

Genesis – Blood On The Rooftops Lyrics 8 years ago

For 27 years, my job was to play music, talk and to judge good music from bad music.

And this is the song I choose as my all-time favorite in the history of the planet.

I won't defend my choice .. it's all personal preference. However, I will note that if you replace the television references and adjust your screen to read Facebook and Twitter .. "media" of the day .. then the song becomes as relevant and poignant as in 1977.

The song is about media. In 1977, the most powerful media was television.

As time goes on, insert your latest and greatest.

Genesis Wind & Wuthering

Genesis A Trick of the Tail

People are basically dumb and have no clue .. NO CLUE .. of the brilliance of these albums.

Unmatched in the annals of all recorded music, any genre, any time.

Max ..

After a year and a half, I did make it back here. I had a few friends that read what I wrote here and kept discussing it and I thought, "Well, they are in to it .. exactly what DID I write here?" So, I came here to see what they were on about. Thank you for the kind comments.

The Publius Enigma thing .. we were very vaguely familiar with it and when it was brought up we thought about it in the same way we thought about people who tried to sync "Wizard of Oz" with DSOTM. If there was any meaning to it, it was probably Storm or David just messing with people .. just to see what they might do about it .. or theories they would come up with after the goofy Wizard of Oz stuff.

However ..

Your comments kind of made me revisit it and remember that time. They were very insightful comments and I would say that is logical .. if it was real. However, I might point out .. David really isn't that smart of a guy. Most of the concepts .. nee all of the concepts .. of deeper meaning were Roger. If Roger was still in the band, I would say you would be dead solid center right. But .. not really with David. Roger is like many of the great English writers. David is more a Sean Connery .. a great English actor (sorry, Connery was Scottish ..but you get my drift). I don't think David's brain really runs that deep. Maybe Storm's but .. not very likely. Not his style.

I would say the most likely conclusion on the Publius thing is .. it wasn't anything at all. It was a series of coincidences that people read so much in to that .. it took on a life of it's own.

Like The Wizard of Oz thing.

But I will admit that your comments turned my brain around and I thought about it deeply.

Genesis – The Lady Lies Lyrics 11 years ago

There's times where I think, "Floyd is .. by far .. the most advanced songwriting that has ever occurred in this plane of consciousness".

Then, I discover another Genesis song from this era.

People, in general, have no clue how advanced Genesis was during the "Trick of the Tail"-"Wind &Wuthering"-".. And Then There Were Three" era. I still think it may be twenty more years before it soaks in to people. It took people about 150 years before Mozart-Bach-Beethoven really started to resonate inside the psyche and people recognized what it was. Genesis may be exactly that way. So, if you are exploring and listening to this music, you're way .. way .. ahead of the curve here. If you've never heard this stuff then .. congratulations .. your life is about to be expanded and refreshed.

Here's the best way to explain genius songwriting:

1,001 songs have been written about some dragon and maiden and on and on. It's cliche.

But .. I took this song very personally because of the experiences I have had in *MY* life. Now, this "Song Meaning" website is supposed to convey opinions on what this means and that means in various tunes. BUT .. the most brilliant songwriting comes when it becomes very personal to you, specifically.

As in:

"Hey Bill .. look at that cloud .. it looks like a horse"

"Huh .. I think it looks like a dog."

For me, when I was 27 years old, there was this woman. I was in the process of getting divorced and this woman .. she had three kids .. by three different men. She had already been divorced twice and she was only 24 years old. Now, I damn straight knew this was bad news .. and I'm a career guy and my buddies were saying "Are you out of your friggin' mind?" I had no kids. I didn't know anything about kids. And here is this woman with three kids by three different men living alone with them:

"Come with me I need you
I fear the dark and I live all alone
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like"

Unbelievable. That verse right there can explain the entire concept of being a female. The first two lines .. a man feels like he is doing something more than just himself. Something bigger .. he's protecting and soothing fear with courage. Wine and food .. alternate consciousness to examine reality and .. sustenance. Come on, man? What else do you need? Well .. "Something special after .. " IT'S THE TRIPLE JACKPOT, GUYS! Holy smokes, I've hit the lottery.

And that .. my dear friends .. is seduction.

To close my personal story .. it was exactly as was expected and I tried to stick it out for 12 years of marriage but in the end .. it's exactly what it was perceived to be when I went in to it.

My dad used to tell me:

"You know what you get, son, when you rescue a damsel in distress?"

"No, dad, what?"

"A damsel in distress"

And that's what this song is about .. *FOR ME* .. and that's the brilliance .. utter brilliance. It's personal. Though it's not written that way.

Genesis has so many layers to them the common person just walks right over it and never gets wet.

Unbelievable genius of immense proportions. If people you are around or interact with do not understand Genesis or think they are about "Mama" or how they can't dance and leave it there .. you might want to steer clear of those people and enrich your existence with the company of somebody who dares to dwell in life a bit more than a chimpanzee with a collar and trousers.

Maximize your humanity.

Listen to Genesis from this period.

Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics 11 years ago

I find the "Animals" album to be vastly underrated. After all these years, I find myself listening to it most of all.

I've worked in radio since 1984 and what a wonderful interpretation of a certain segment of broadcasting this is for me, personally. There are several departments to a large broadcasting operation. They are very, very segmented .. it's almost like high school with the different social classes. There's engineering (these are the smart guys that work on the transmitter and fix the mixing boards and the transponder on the tower).. there is accounting, which schedules the commercials and keeps track of all of the accounts and pay structure (these are the math whizzes) .. there is, of course, several layers of management (these are the inept clumsy geeks that can't do anything right. And that, actually, is the truth. All their wives are hideous ugly and they are pitiful creatures, tormented even) .. there is talent, which is on-air (and that is broken down in to "news guys" and "music guys") .. and then there is sales.

"Dogs" so flawlessly describes the salesmen that it is spooky.

I first went on the air for a paycheck in 1984 and it has never changed with these guys. And all of us jocks so look down on these guys. And this song captures it perfectly.

One of the reasons I wanted to get in to radio was that old tv show "WKRP in Cincinnati". That show is so amazing in it's caricature of the radio industry. And this song was played during an episode. I don't think it was by accident. Obviously, WKRP writers had a close connection with radio. And they must have felt the same way as me about "Dogs" from the "Animals" album. Mr Carlson asks Johnny Fever in the episode that this song is in "Is that dogs barking on that record?" and Johnny goes, "I hope so".

They probably didn't mean it the way some of us in radio take it but, man, they hit it dead solid center, night in the ruts, when it comes to salesmen in broadcasting.

*POW* Outta the park .. Gone.

Pink Floyd – Keep Talking Lyrics 11 years ago
..

In the history of Pink Floyd, there is a theme of absence in their most successful material. DSOTM and WYWH both explored Syd's absence. David Gilmour saw an allegory to Roger leaving and thought their might be some gold to mine. It had worked in the past and was the actual history of Pink Floyd.

When you listen to everything on "The Division Bell", keep that in mind. I feel like David had very hard feelings towards Roger. However, this song also shows another side of Dave that secretly, kinda .. hopes that maybe ... possibly.

But "he can't show his weakness". Remember, these are human beings we are talking about here. These are not numbers. Those two guys shared a lot of experiences together .. even though they were never really that close as friends. There is just no way you could possibly .. not feel anything, anything at all .. towards Roger not being there.

And I think this might be a small little .. maybe coming Roger's way just .. a little. And seeing how he might react in the nineties to that movement. But "he can't show his weakness". So he shrouds it in the production pyrotechnics and gymnastics of the FM synthesized voice.

A ready made answer is right there: "oh no, that was all about Stephen Hawking"

Can't show his weakness. But maybe .. possibly .. we can work things out with Roger .. if we just .. keep ... talking.

Pink Floyd – High Hopes Lyrics 11 years ago

This song is distinctly meant to not only be the last song on "The Division Bell" but also the last song .. ever .. for Pink Floyd.

This outro of the song is the music before the death of a great, great band.

The lyrics go through the years of Pink Floyd and all the things it *felt* like. There are also allegories to aging and dying and looking back at one's life and the way it *felt*.

The final phrasing, the couplets, are supposed to be an ode to the final song (Eclipse) on Dark Side of the Moon as the work that Floyd will be most remembered for. They are both written in the same style.

I believe, personally, that this song turned out so good that any time that David might have been tempted to resurrect the band in the ensuing decade, I think he kept looking back at this song and thinking, "I don't think I can put it to bed any better than that. That just about perfect." So, he let Pink Floyd be and die gracefully and in silence.

This is a Top 5 song in the history of Floyd. A true masterpiece.

You did good with the eulogy, Dave.

You did good.

Pink Floyd – Poles Apart Lyrics 11 years ago

After reading the user comments here, I navigated away from this page .. this entire site .. because I thought, "They missed it. It's just people, random people, throwing in their two cents but .. wow, they missed it." I'm from Cleveland, OH and I've been employed for many years to study the concepts and lyrics of rock music. This is my job. And it has been for over 25 years. I navigated back here because it's Floyd and it is easy for folks to miss things with them.

Because it is The Internet and everyone is an expert .. and if anyone says anything at all contrary to their viewpoint or opinion, even in the smallest way, it is an entire affront to their way of life, religion, the beauty of their wife and the aesthetic value of their dog .. and must be defended with the intensity of Divine Wind warriors .. I will not be coming back here to argue or even read anything written on this page. So, if your blood starts to boil, remember, you're talking to yourself because I'll never see it.

That being said ..

Pink Floyd's primary success was extracted from the trauma that all the members experienced at watching Syd slowly melt. DSOTM was entirely about all the things that make you go nuts (Time, Money, Religion, etc.) Moon, lunacy, so on. Obviously, Wish You Were Here, with Shine On, was primarily about Syd but .. there was also a couple tracks on that album that were not about Syd. DSOTM was more about Syd than people really recognize.

Now, David Gilmour loves Shine On and also is a smart man. He realized there was a vein there to be mined. He looked upon Roger leaving as, roughly, the same thing and thought there was some hay to be made on that subject. Much in the way that Syd served them before. Except with Roger, it was his choice to leave. And there was nothing wrong with him short of a massive case of "Asshole-itis". Genius people tend to be that way.

But, this pissed Dave off to a level that I would venture to say that David Gilmour has never been pissed off to. He's just not that kinda guy. But you know who else wasn't? John Lennon. He was a very peaceful guy. However, check out the song "How do you sleep?" by Lennon. It's viscous. And it's all about Paul. (John tried to tidy it up after hearing from lawyers and public relations people at the record company but read the lyrics yourself. It's a massively cruel song directed right at Paul McCartney)

Now, this is not only rock history but this is some major personalities in rock, also from England, that Dave idolized (who couldn't, really).

So, with all this percolating underneath as the basis, premise and bedrock, this song is David Gilmour being as viscous as in any song I have ever heard him. But, you have to take the entire The Division Bell album and view it through what I mentioned.

It's all about Roger Waters. All of it. There is no Syd in the first verse. David Gilmour would never be so mean and cruel to a guy who was mentally handicapped. It's just not David Gilmour. But to a guy that sued him and caused great pain for him, and Nick and Rick, yeah.

It's all about Roger. As are many of the other songs on The Division Bell. No even allusions or allegories or subtleties. It's blatantly directed straight at Roger Waters' face and meant to be that way.

So, there it is.

Take it for what you paid to read it.
