Björk – Who Is It? Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Wow, thank you for a beautiful interpretation! I think you're doing well on your path of strengthening already. |
The Dismemberment Plan – You Are Invited Lyrics | 11 years ago |
emsquared: "I feel this song is about the fact that you can do whatever you want with your life, the "invite" is just a metaphor for free-will and being an adult, but it is your responsibility to make it happen." I agree. |
Bright Eyes – Bowl of Oranges Lyrics | 11 years ago |
A balance between living for yourself / living for the world. A balance between narcissism / compassion. |

Akron/Family – Franny/You're Human Lyrics | 11 years ago |
hahaha... |
Midlake – some of them were superstitious Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Instead of "the bright of sun," I hear "the bright, new sun." Also, I LOVE the melody, the chords, the lyrics and the build-up of: "And when you're gone you're gone... So soon, so soon, so long... But life it works for someone, And you're someone." |
of Montreal – Y the Quale and the Vaguely Bird Noisly Enjoying Their Forbidden Tryst/I'd Be a Yellow Feathered Loon Lyrics | 11 years ago |
An antacid with a brown wig on. Ahahaha.... |
Joanna Newsom – Peach, Plum, Pear Lyrics | 11 years ago |
First line: "we speak in the store" Last line: "peach, plum, pear, peach, plum" The other lyrics are an emotional story told about a relationship. It's almost like the main lyrics exist in a storytelling bubble. But the story is being told at a store, maybe a supermarket. Once the story is over, the narrator looks around. Self-conscious, she just names the first thing in sight. Peach, plum, pear. $2.99 per pound ;) Also I hear "I WAS blue," instead of "I AM blue." |
Joanna Newsom – This Side of the Blue Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I also ponder clear vs. obscure lyrics, which is ultimately better... Clear words probably wins, because beautiful/obscure words are too private and selfish on the artist's end. Here's another quote: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." -Albert Einstein |
Joanna Newsom – Sadie Lyrics | 11 years ago |
"And you do lose what you don't hold." Beautiful lyric.. Also I find it curious that she mentions "white coat" again (first time was in Sprout and the Bean) |
Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I like the pregnancy idea a lot. BUT... I can't believe no one has mentioned GREGOR MENDEL. (sprout and the bean = pea experiments, it is a twisted string = DNA) |
Sondre Lerche – Two Way Monologue Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I believe this song is about the conflicts between what parents want for their children and what the children want for themselves. Especially when the children become young adults and make decisions on their own but have to deal with their parents' nagging, fearful and stubborn advice. It could also be about Sondre wanting to be a musician instead of a lawyer or doctor or whatnot, and having to defend that choice. "Mum, all the other options that you had in mind starve me" Doctor or lawyer makes money, but would starve me and my personal goals. "Pa, won't you listen and I'll let you in on this. Blind me, as you listen I'll reduce advice to dust. Oh no, I shouldn't have to spell my name" Stop giving me advice for a second dad, and I'll let you know that your advice doesn't apply to me, I make my own decisions. You gave me my name when I was born, not your name. You know that I am my own unique person. |
Stereolab – Come And Play In The Milky Night Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Quite possibly my favorite song of all time. Reminds me of when I was 18 and would walk through redwoods at night. |
Stereolab – Caleidoscopic Gaze Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Nick Drake – Hazey Jane I Lyrics | 11 years ago |
"Will it mean much to you if I treat you right?" SO BEAUTIFUL. |
Nick Drake – Know Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This is a love song. But it's not needy, emotional or puppy dog. Love that's mature and adult. Love that holds up for better or worse, doesn't matter. Love that doesn't need praise from another. Love that isn't needy. Love that stays true no matter what. |
Nick Drake – Road Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It's hard to write simple songs and make them sound good. Nick does it so well. The more a song uses universal symbols (sun, moon, road, stars), the more it can be interpreted... One possibility that hasn't been mentioned yet: insomnia. I think I remember reading that Nick was an insomniac... Also, I love "I can take the road that'll see me through." It's ultimately a song about being true to yourself. |
Josephine Foster – Celebrant's song Lyrics | 11 years ago |
A strong woman asks: Are you Prince Charming/Romeo, or Tarzan/Marlon Brando? Are you concerned with love, or with sex? |
Björk – Earth Intruders Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Could it be that she's talking about a more small and specific group of humans within the whole human race? Maybe a group of inspirers... a group with a "shower of goodness" message to share with earth... "Intruding" would be stirring up the dull daily lives that most humans have. |
Sufjan Stevens – Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Restore! Rebuild! Reconsider!) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Everything you want, it’s a great idea. |
Sufjan Stevens – Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Restore! Rebuild! Reconsider!) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Think it's 9/8. |
Sufjan Stevens – The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders (Part 1: The Great Frontier; Part 2: Come to Me Only with Playthings Now) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
First part is 11/4. Or 5/4 and 6/4 repeating over and over again. You're right, the second part is 4/4... I love time signatures. |
Sondre Lerche – On the Tower Lyrics | 11 years ago |
A person is feeling low and in the middle of drama. The singer sees the situation with clarity and optimism, and gives advice. The song is about helping someone you love. Specifically in a light-hearted, playful and sweet way. |
Gruff Rhys – Sensations In The Dark Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Love this song. "Sensations In The Dark" is another phrase for nightlife. Neon lights and bar chatter and whatnot. The song follows the character's different experiences with nightlife. Verse 1 - STAYING INDOORS AT NIGHT: An introverted, peaceful, shy, nice guy. He stays indoors and "drinks melody" AKA plays music by himself at night. "No fistfights" = doesn't want to go out to bars and nightlife. Happy to be a quiet, nice musician. Verse 2 - BECOMING MORE SOCIALLY TALENTED: Something changes. "A century of shadows lifted upwards and discarded into thin air" means that he's feeling the relief of a burden lifted, most likely his introverted ways. Now he feels comfortable enough to talk with strangers ("other's mothers") and he doesn't blush anymore, for some reason. Verse 3 - MEETING SOMEONE, LOSING THEM, FEELING GRATEFUL TO HAVE MET THEM: Because of becoming more social, he meets someone. They introduce him to "great new ideas" and make a bond and impact with him. But over time they are pulled apart, or grow apart for whatever reason. He feels peaceful about the breakup (he's "a dedicated pacifist" remember), and remembers the relationship fondly now. That's my take. |
Fleet Foxes – Grown Ocean Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Whenever I hear this album, I think of tarot cards... Especially "The Fool" card from the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. And Voltaire's "Candide." Anyone else get that vibe? |
