Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen Lyrics 4 years ago
I'm really surprised that the complex nature of this song is not seen by these comments.. As with many great songs, there are multiple poetic meanings, and not just the obvious one. It may have started about teenage sex, but it sure didn't end up that way. This song is about promising your love to get them out of the hell of English poverty, and make a better life for themselves.

You know this from the first verse. The reason why they used Johnny Ray, out of all the 50's singer, is because was he was known as the blue caller crooner, who was beloved by working class English women, because of his extreme poverty to riches story. Hence the first verse, and why the song starts out like that.

Then there's the second verse, which makes it far more complex, that has nothing to with just trying to sleep with a young love. Some teenager just looking to "get a leg over" would never say this:

These people round here, wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces, so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us, we are far too young and clever
(Remember) Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Eileen I'll hum this tune forever

In the 80's to be poor in England was miserable. This song actually ends up being more about using love and a relationship to get out of poverty, than just sex. The sex part is just the hook to get you to listen and remember it.

The Monkees – Daydream Believer Lyrics 6 years ago
What a perfect song, as it has a great melody and can have so many meanings - like so many of the classics do. When I was a kid, this song meant a single guy with no money, trying to wake up his girlfriend. You know she's young too, because she daydreams. Davy Jones's voice is perfect for that, as it sounds so young here. And just the fact they were sleeping together and not married, was real counterculture at the time, which made it really romantic.

When I got married, it began to have a different meaning, where it was hey, let's hold on, we're having trouble but we can make it. Through marriage it became, yes we've been through a lot, but I love you so much, it doesn't matter anymore.

The funny thing about this song is that that Monkees didn't like it at all at first, especially Davy Jones. He thought it was a throwaway song to fill up a record, and just to give him an excuse to sing. What he and the band completely missed was this song was the closest in tone and fun to the TV show, and had real meaning to kids at the time. When you add in the fact that a young Davy Jones sounds like he's a young guy trying to wake up his beautiful girlfriend, it made for a perfect song at the time. The tune makes it a real classic.

@[bjrbluepaint:5586] Just scary you would think that. It's obviously a love song, and ABBA has confirmed it many times. By the way, ABBA was not at all religious.

@[altsain:5585] If you watch the voting, it was all politics. The UK thought they had a winner in Olivia Newton John, so they voted for other countries with little chance of winning, and made sure not vote for Sweden. Most of Sweden's votes came from countries that knew their country wasn't going to win. The system was changed the next year.

Kinda sad your excellent interpretation got so many thumbs down. It certainly is about rising up and attacking what's wrong and letting the fire "Burn".

Ellie is certainly not a fundamentalist Christian, so I'm sorry, you're just trying to see something that's not there. The song certainly isn't pro-Christian, if you're trying to read into that. It has been talked about being a pro-gay rights song many times by the people who wrote the song. Not that Jesus would be on the anti-gay side of the so called "Christians". But the song certainly isn't Biblical.

Music is art and everything is subjective. But you said it yourself, you hate this song. So of course your going to see the darkest context to it. Unfortunately, it shows your complete bias and makes your interpretation null and void.
