Pearl Jam – Buckle Up Lyrics | 1 year ago |
I think this is about a male doctor whose mother is sending him on a guilt trip. I got blood Blood on my hands The stain of, of a human [Stanza 1 - all about the act of an abortion] -- I finally awoke To my mother's wrath Call lights Bed sores and sponge baths [Stanza 2 - His mother is unhappy with what he does - he feels her judgment] -- Firstly do no harm Then put your seatbelt on Buckle up Buckle up [Stanza 3 - The Dr. Hippocratic oath is brought here - likely her saying - you aren't supposed to hurt people but you are murdering babies - She is putting the guilt TRIP on hard and he needs to "buckle up" because she isn't stopping any time soon] -- The drapes pull back Reveal her wound Her boy on her lap A murderer groomed [Stanza 4 - At some point the mother likely says - "What if I aborted you?!" and he imagines pulling back the drapes in a hospital and seeing his mother in the delivery room holding him (he is her "wound" because he disappoints her because he does abortions - he is on her lap and eventually becomes an abortion doctor (a murderer groomed)] -- Antiquities lost Lost to the Nile A sudden slip A fall on the tile [Stanza 5 - this is more about how she is probably saying how America has lost its way, "Make America great again" - we have lost the old (Antique) way .. "Lost to the Nile" is likely a play on words in his mind saying she is in "denial". ((I am struggling with the Sudden slip and fall on the time)) -- Firstly do no harm Then put your seatbelt on Buckle up Buckle up Buckle up Buckle up [Stanza 6 - more reminders from his mom that he should "do no harm" and he has to continually listen to her guilt him - so he puts on his seatbelt for the guilt trip.] |

Also - I could be completely wrong about the mom portion and it is about a female soldier - know one really "Wanders" into a cemetery - they get put there - and then all the thoughts are hers about the war... |

I agree with many of the post that this song was probably has references to the Persian gulf war - the time line works since the 10 album came out in August of '91 and the war started in August of '90. 1st verse - She don't wander in Don't wander in here, she She don't wander in here Don't wander in here I think the idea that first verse is about a mother who has lost a child in the war who does not want to go to the "garden of stone" AKA the cemetery. 2nd verse - The direction of the eye, so misleading The defection of the soul, nauseously quick I don't question our existence I just question our modern needs first 2 sentences have me bewildered a bit - but the last 2 lines are about the mom questioning why her child died in this war - She knows what life is suposed to be about (I don't question our existence) but she questions our reasons for the war - our need for oil.. which was a HUGE discussion among liberals that oil was the real reason for our "interest" in the region. 3rd verse - She don't wander in Don't wander in here, she She don't wander in here there is the sad mom again not wanting to go in to the cemetery 4th verse - I will walk with my hands bound I will walk with my face down (I always thought this was the word "blood") I will walk with my shadow flag Into your garden, garden of stone, yeah The religious imagery here is CRAZY BLATANT - just like Jesus walking Calvary - with is hands tied and the crown of of thorns on his head making his face bloody - and his head down - but instead of carrying a cross he is carrying the weight of a flag - a shadow flag - does it really have meaning or is it a farce.. 5th verse - After all is done and we're still alone I won't be taken Yet I'll go with my hands bound I will walk with my face down I will walk with my shadow flag Into your garden, garden of stone She eventually takes the plunge and goes to the cemetery - she won't be taken - she will go for her child 5ht verse - I don't show, I don't share I don't need, yeah What you have to give, yeah She does not show her emotion - she doesn't talk about her feelings - she doesn't need anyone - because her child is gone and she is merely a shell of her former self That is what I think - PJ forever! |

I agree with Tig45 - when he said on 11/26/10 "First verse - Heroin (?) addict shooting up Second verse - Self-mutilation Third verse - Rape of a young woman I replied to someones old post about the the rape portion with the following: I think the portion about the "Christmas clean love' is actually the rapist thinking - he is LEERING at her.. thinking these thoughts - he thinks that she is "a virgin down from heaven" and then the rest of the verse is about her - To the man above her She just ain't nothing And she doesn't like the view She doesn't like the view She doesn't like the view But he sinks himself deep I was intrigued by the thoughts that this was about a single crazed out homosexual... I pondered it a lot but could not wrap myself around why he would rape a young girl. Seems out of character for how Eddie writes - seems like he would not paint a minority in such a dark light... I definitely think this is about 3 different scenarios and people... Eddie likes to do things in 3 - ergo the Mamasan trilogy. This is an awesome song however you interpret the lyrics!!! Love this band forever! |

I think the portion about the "Christmas clean love' is actually the rapist thinking - he is LEERING at her.. thinking these thoughts - he thinks that she is "a virgin down from heaven" and then the rest of the verse is about her - To the man above her She just ain't nothing And she doesn't like the view She doesn't like the view She doesn't like the view But he sinks himself deep 7 years later - hope you get this :) |
