From what I understand, This song is literally about a nightlight.. throw in a couple dashes of metaphor. He's talking about the comfort and safety of having a nightlight watch over you, and that the nightlight is like a lighthouse in the sense that it keeps you safe. In this perspective, it's the feeling of safety rather than the nightlight actually keeping him from harm. Keeping the birdhouse in your soul, is like saying keep that feeling of safe passage with you, don't be afraid. Thats what I always got from this song. |

I think it's about a guy who had a drug problem, had someone help him through it.. something happens, he uses again (the needle tears a hole, that old familiar sting) to try to feel numb - "I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel" He goes through the high hoping to forget his problem (Try to kill it all away, But I remember everything), knowing shortly after that he basically just ruined himself all over again. He starts to feel tremendous guilt. He would gladly give up every bit of himself and his wealth, possessions etc not to feel so horrible, and goes on to say that he isn't worth saving, but if he could start over, he wouldn't change the circumstances that brought him to the misery, he would instead try to be better through the adversity. just my take on it. |

A lot of people have told me a lot of different meanings.. But what I always took away from this song, was that it's about changing someone for the worst, and feeling so guilty you want to die. For example, let say you had a drug habit, but never got yourself into a bad situation, just recreation and that it. But you turned someone onto this drug, and they turned into a major junky. "I watched you change into a fly" To me is like "I watched you become this filthy creature", and "it's like you never had wings", Maybe it's like "i used to see you as an angle, now I see you as a fly". Tearing off the wings, making this person this broken, damaged creature. And all you have left if your guilt for letting this happen to someone. That's what I took from this. |
